The Samsung Galaxy S25 FE is Tech Advisor’s best overall mid-range phone pick for 2026, but it is not a universal winner: another current guide favors the Google Pixel 10a for most buyers. The right choice depends on what matters most to you—camera versatility, battery life, gaming, repairability, software support, or iOS. Here are the ten category picks in Tech Advisor’s October 1, 2026 roundup, with the trade-offs that could make each one a better or worse fit.
What counts as a mid-range phone?
There is no formal industry-wide definition. Tech Advisor uses a SIM-free price bracket of more than £300/$300 and less than £700/$700; that is the publication’s editorial definition, not a technical standard. Engadget frames its own guide around shoppers spending less than $600, illustrating that these lists can use different boundaries. Because the guides cover different markets and model pools, their recommendations should not be treated as a single global ranking. Check local availability and the price of the exact storage configuration before comparing value.

1. Samsung Galaxy S25 FE — best overall
Tech Advisor’s all-round pick stands out for its flagship-like build, main and selfie cameras, battery life, and One UI. The guide cites seven years of updates and 45W charging as product claims. Its supporting cameras are less impressive than its primary cameras, and Qi2 wireless charging requires a compatible case. Choose it if you want a polished Samsung experience and broad everyday strengths rather than a specialist phone.
#1 Best Overall

- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²

2. Google Pixel 9a — best software
The Pixel 9a is Tech Advisor’s software pick, with a strong display and cameras, Google’s software experience, and a stated seven years of updates. Its main compromises are the lack of a telephoto camera and slower charging. Tech Advisor observes that the newer Pixel 10a is nearly identical and that the older model can now be found more cheaply; that is a guide observation, not a guaranteed live price difference. If zoom photography matters or you need the fastest charging, look elsewhere.
3. Nothing Phone (4a) — best value
Tech Advisor prefers the standard Nothing Phone (4a) over the Pro model on value. That category verdict alone does not establish a hardware advantage, and the best buy depends on the current local price and configuration. Compare the two models directly before paying extra for the Pro; the roundup’s full review and recommendations provide its evaluation.
4. Oppo Reno 16 — best for zoom photography
The roundup’s zoom-oriented choice also earns praise for compactness, durability, cameras, a bright AMOLED display, and software features. The drawbacks are pre-installed software, Mind Space features that need work, and no wireless charging. Consider it if zoom capability and a relatively compact design rank above a cleaner software setup or wireless charging.

5. Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max — best battery life
Tech Advisor highlights battery life, build, 100W charging, and high-storage value. It also flags busy software, middling performance, and display calibration as compromises. The 100W figure is the guide’s charging claim, not a guarantee of the charging speed you will see in every configuration or use condition. This is a fit for buyers prioritizing endurance and fast charging over top-tier performance or a more restrained interface.
6. Fairphone Gen 6 Plus — best for repairability and sustainability
Its defining strengths in the roundup are repairability through spare parts and a long warranty. The trade-offs are performance, a boxy design, and average battery life. It is the category choice for buyers who value keeping a phone repairable over time; those seeking the fastest device or a particularly slim design may prefer another pick.
7. Honor 600 — best display
Tech Advisor calls out a bright display, 200MP main camera, two-day battery life, and design. Those strengths come with no wireless charging, pre-installed software, and a basic ultrawide camera. Choose it for its screen and stated battery-life appeal, not if wireless charging or a versatile ultrawide camera is essential.

- 6.7" pOLED display and Dolby Atmos. Experience cinema-quality entertainment with over a billion shades of color and multidimensional sound*.

- Standout design. Make a statement with its stunning look, modern color, and soft, vegan leather finish.
8. Xiaomi Poco X8 Pro Max — best performance
The roundup’s performance pick combines value, speed, display and speakers, battery life, and charging. Its compromises are the ultrawide camera, software support, and pre-installed software. It makes more sense for gaming and demanding apps than for buyers whose main priority is camera flexibility or long software support.

9. Samsung Galaxy A57 5G — best for AI
Tech Advisor highlights a sleeker, more durable design, the interface, and six years of software support. It also questions the price, camera changes from the preceding model, and value relative to performance. The guide’s six-year figure is a stated support claim. Check the local price against the S25 FE and other alternatives before choosing it primarily for AI features.
10. Apple iPhone 17e — best-value iPhone
The iPhone 17e is the list’s iOS option, with a compact design, performance, battery life, and MagSafe among its strengths. Its 60Hz display and wired charging of up to 20W are notable compromises, as are camera features omitted compared with iPhone 17. Pick it if you want iOS and MagSafe in this category, not if a high-refresh-rate screen or the broader camera feature set is a priority.

How to choose between the picks
Start with the feature that would most change your day-to-day use. A camera-first shopper should decide whether zoom, main-camera quality, or an ultrawide camera matters most; those are different strengths, not interchangeable measures of “best camera.” For gaming or demanding apps, favor performance, while checking the camera and software-support trade-offs. For long ownership, compare each model’s stated update support and consider repairability separately: updates do not make a phone physically repairable.
- Want Samsung’s all-round experience? Start with the Galaxy S25 FE; consider the A57 if its AI features and design appeal justify its price and performance trade-offs.
- Prefer Google’s software? Compare the Pixel 9a with the Pixel 10a available in your market, checking the exact price rather than assuming the older model is cheaper.
- Prioritize battery or charging? Compare the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, Honor 600, and Poco X8 Pro Max against your preferred interface and performance level.
- Want gaming performance? The Poco X8 Pro Max is Tech Advisor’s pick; a separate guide names the OnePlus 15R for performance and battery.
- Value repairability? The Fairphone Gen 6 Plus is the list’s repairability choice.
- Want iOS? The iPhone 17e is the list’s iPhone recommendation, with display and camera compromises relative to iPhone 17.
Why 2026 guides name different winners
Tech Advisor names the Galaxy S25 FE best overall, whereas iTechGuides recommends the Pixel 10a for most buyers. These conclusions come from different model pools, markets, and editorial priorities; one does not disprove the other. In its August 10, 2026 comparison, iTechGuides also names the OnePlus 15R for performance and battery, Galaxy A57 for Samsung and a large screen, Nothing Phone (4a) Pro for design and zoom, POCO X8 Pro Max for gaming and battery value, and iPhone 17e for iOS. Its Pixel 10a profile cites a 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED display, IP68, wireless charging, and seven years of updates, while noting that it is not the fastest option. Those are that guide’s model details and recommendations, not a reason to treat its dated prices or stock information as current.

Other guides use their own comparisons as well: Engadget’s mid-range guide, PhoneArena’s 2026 guide, and GSMArena’s 2026 buyer’s guide. A recommendation is most useful when read alongside the criteria and market behind it, not as a universal league table.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Compare like for like. Check the same storage configuration and whether a price is SIM-free, carrier-tied, or bundled. A lower price for a different capacity is not a direct comparison.
- Verify local availability and compatibility. Check that the exact regional model supports your carrier’s network bands and that the seller offers a warranty you can use in your country.
- Check the current terms. Prices, stock, regional configurations, and software availability can change. Confirm the current listing and support details rather than relying on a dated guide’s purchase information.
- Weigh the whole ownership fit. Consider display, camera needs, performance, battery and charging, update support, repair options, and the software you will use every day—not just the category award.
