Five devices more than a decade old still earn a place in my daily routine: a Kindle 4, a Sonos Play:1, a Panasonic mini hi-fi, a 2014 iMac, and a Logitech Harmony Hub. They have not stayed useful in exactly the same way. Some still do their original jobs; others depend on newer software, external storage, or smart-home workarounds.
What keeps an old gadget useful?
Age alone does not tell you whether a device can still do its job. In my experience, the deciding factors are its physical condition, whether the services and apps it depends on still work, and how much setup or maintenance I am willing to take on. These five examples describe my own use, not a general measure of how long electronics last.

Kindle 4: an e-reader with a software workaround
I still use my fourth-generation Kindle for reading, but I installed KOReader after losing access to some Amazon service features on the device. The article describing my setup reports that Amazon dropped support in May 2026 for Kindle models released in 2012 or earlier. It says this prevented me from accessing the Kindle Store, downloading books from my Kindle library, signing back into my account after a factory reset, or using Send to Kindle. Those service-change details are reported by the article, rather than independently confirmed by an Amazon notice.

KOReader and its plugins give the Kindle more file-format and reading-function options. That helps keep the hardware useful for my needs, but it is a different experience from relying on Amazon’s built-in services. Anyone considering the same route should check that the software and file workflow suit their own device and reading habits. Source: How-To Geek article

Sonos Play:1: keeping a speaker in the rotation
My Sonos Play:1 remains in use through Music Assistant, which lets me avoid using the Sonos app for my listening setup. The article describes the speaker as having a 3.5-inch mid-woofer, a separate tweeter, Class-D amplifiers, and Trueplay room correction; those specifications were not separately checked against Sonos documentation. My reason for keeping it is practical: it still fills a role in my home audio setup.
Music Assistant is part of my own configuration, not a guarantee that every Play:1 or smart-home installation will work the same way. Compatibility depends on the device, software, and the rest of the setup. Source: How-To Geek article

Panasonic SC-PMX9DB: a compact stereo for workday music
I use my Panasonic SC-PMX9DB mini hi-fi system for music while I work. The article identifies it as a 2013 system with two bookshelf speakers. I prefer listening on it to using smart speakers, but that is my personal experience, not the result of a controlled sound-quality comparison.

This system remains useful to me because it serves a straightforward purpose: playing music in my workspace. Whether a compact stereo makes sense for someone else depends on their listening preferences and the equipment they already own. Source: How-To Geek article

Late-2014 27-inch iMac 5K: an older Mac with an external SSD
My late-2014 27-inch iMac 5K is still my main writing and editing computer, even though its internal Fusion drive failed. I run it from an external SSD and use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to install macOS versions newer than Big Sur, which the article identifies as the last officially supported version for this iMac. It also reports that some applications no longer support Big Sur.
This is a personal workaround, not a general recommendation to install an unofficially supported operating system. Patching does not erase hardware limits or guarantee security updates, application support, or reliable operation. Before depending on a similar setup, consider whether the specific apps and tasks you need work on your particular Mac and whether you are comfortable maintaining a patched system. Logitech Harmony Hub: AV control through Home Assistant
I still use my Logitech Harmony Hub to control some AV devices as part of a Home Assistant setup. The article says my equipment includes devices controlled over infrared or Bluetooth, and that I replaced the Harmony remote after its buttons wore out. A Wi-Fi remote and automation now handle parts of the setup. It also reports that updates had made the Harmony app effectively unusable for me.
That experience does not establish current compatibility or availability for other owners. Harmony control depends on the specific AV equipment and the way it is integrated; check that your devices and intended control method are supported before building a setup around them. The trade-off behind keeping older devices
For me, the appeal is not that these gadgets are effortless or that every old device can be revived. Each one remains useful for a different reason, and some rely on workarounds that add upkeep.
- Services and apps: The Kindle and Harmony examples show how vendor services or apps can shape whether older hardware remains convenient.
- Alternative software and automation: KOReader, Music Assistant, OpenCore Legacy Patcher, and Home Assistant each play a role in my setups, but they bring their own compatibility considerations.
- Storage and hardware condition: The iMac still serves me after its internal drive failed because I use an external SSD; that does not mean the same repair or workaround suits every machine.
- Personal preference: I keep the Panasonic stereo because I like listening to it while I work. That preference is not a measured claim about sound quality.
My daily use of these five devices is a snapshot of one person’s setup. It is not proof that consumer electronics generally last ten years, or that the same software and services will work for another owner.
