Change one setting at a time, because the controls and menu names vary between Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce and different Mint releases.
1. Use one coherent theme and remove visual extras
Open System Settings and look for Themes or Appearance. Select a readable Mint theme and keep the main elements visually consistent instead of mixing unrelated window borders, controls and icon styles.

- Remove desklets you do not actually use.
- Delete or hide applets that duplicate information already available elsewhere.
- Keep panel decorations restrained and remove decorative items that do not support a task.
- Choose a panel layout with only the launchers, indicators and workspace controls you need.
Linux Mint’s Cinnamon 5.4 release notes describe a rendering model in which windows use the GTK theme. The same notes highlight cleaner GTK antialiasing and crisper rounded corners. In practice, the useful goal is consistency: one theme with clear text, a controlled panel and fewer competing visual elements. The exact labels and available theme controls depend on your Mint edition and Cinnamon version.

What this changes
This adjustment is primarily visual. It can make the desktop easier to scan and reduce the sense of clutter, but it is not a guaranteed performance benchmark. Theme cleanup is also easy to reverse: return to the same Themes or Appearance panel and select the previous option, then restore any desklet or applet you removed.
2. Lower or disable window animations
In Cinnamon, open Cinnamon Settings and find the Window Effects, Effects or Animations controls. Depending on the release, you can lower the global animation speed, disable individual effects, or turn effects off altogether.

- Open Cinnamon Settings from the application menu.
- Open the window-effects or animations section.
- Reduce the global speed, or switch off effects that add no value to your normal work.
- Apply the change and use the desktop for a few minutes before changing another option.
Linux Mint’s official release notes say that “the default set looks much cleaner than before and the global speed of animations is configurable.” The official Linux Mint Blog likewise says, “The new animations look cleaner and along with the performance improvements they make Cinnamon feel snappier than before.” Those statements describe Cinnamon’s design and engineering work; they are not a promise that every application will launch faster after one toggle.

On older graphics hardware, a shorter animation can make clicks, window opening and workspace changes feel more immediate because less time passes before the next state appears. If completely disabling effects makes transitions hard to follow, keep animations enabled at a lower speed. That preserves visual feedback while reducing the delay you notice during repeated window operations.

Animation settings mainly affect perceived responsiveness and interaction pacing. They do not provide a universal frames-per-second, boot-time or memory reduction figure. Restore the original speed or re-enable effects from the same panel if the desktop feels too abrupt.
3. Disable nonessential Startup Applications
Open Preferences or System Settings, then choose Startup Applications. Clear the checkbox beside programs you do not need immediately after logging in. The Linux Mint user guide explains that an application configured there “will be launched automatically each time after you log in” and that this “can be disabled by deselecting the application.”

- Open Startup Applications.
- Read each entry’s name and description rather than disabling items at random.
- Deselect optional launchers, tray helpers and applications you prefer to start manually.
- Log out and back in once, then check that the services you rely on still work.
What to leave enabled
Unless you know exactly what an entry does, leave desktop-session, network, audio, input, update and security components enabled. Cinnamon’s developer guide explains that cinnamon-session launches core desktop components and applications configured to start automatically, so this list controls real login-time work. Disabling the wrong entry can remove a network indicator, delay an input service or prevent an update and security helper from starting when expected.
The trade-off
Startup cleanup can reduce automatic background work during login, but a disabled application will not be ready until you start it yourself. If a tray icon, synchronisation client or helper disappears, return to Startup Applications and re-enable its checkbox. Make changes one at a time so you can identify which entry caused a side effect.

What the published performance evidence does—and does not—show
Linux Mint’s official blog includes a historical Cinnamon performance investigation using a 200-window test. It reported a build time of 1 second in Metacity versus 4 seconds in Cinnamon, and recovery time of 6 seconds versus 22 seconds before the cited fixes. After those fixes, the post reported Cinnamon as fast as Metacity for those tests.
Those figures are development benchmarks for Cinnamon’s window-management work, not measurements of your computer and not a quantified result for disabling startup applications. The official material does not publish a universal percentage improvement for these three desktop changes. To measure your own result, compare login behavior and everyday interaction before and after each change, keeping the rest of the system the same.

- Record or photograph your current theme, panel and animation settings.
