“There is nothing like human”: Hollywood’s AI film push meets rising searches for movies made without AI

Hollywood studios are exploring AI-assisted filmmaking even as searches for “movies with no AI” rise. But the available figures show people asking questions—not that moviegoers are rejecting AI-made films. TechRadar reported that Filmustage found searches for “movies with no AI” up 345% and “movies made with AI” up 112% over the past month. Those increases point to interest in AI’s role in film, not a proven change in what audiences watch or buy tickets for.

What the search figures do—and don’t—show

In an October 1, 2026 report, TechRadar said Filmustage analyzed Google Trends data and found searches for “movies with no AI” up 345% and searches for “movies made with AI” up 112% over the past month. The figures are attributed to Filmustage and reported by TechRadar; the original analysis was not independently located. TechRadar’s report does not establish the precise query definitions, geography, starting values, or calculation method.

Google Trends reflects relative search interest. A large percentage increase can arise from a small starting level, and a search does not reveal whether someone is curious, concerned, supportive, or looking for a particular title. The figures therefore cannot establish that audiences are turning against AI, nor do they measure viewing choices or ticket sales.

Why AI is entering film production

Utopai’s production-assistance approach

Utopai Studios says it brought its research, cinematic workflows, and production technology together in 2026 in a system it calls Production Assistive Intelligence, or PAI. The company presents PAI as an engine for production assistance and lists an expanded film and television slate including Cortés, Half Moon, and The Most Serious Fart. This is Utopai’s account of its own work; it does not independently demonstrate the system’s results, the scale of its adoption, or any production savings. Utopai Studios

The Gifted and feature-film development

TechRadar also described The Gifted as an AI-generated trailer that won a competition connected to $2.5 million toward developing a feature film. That amount and description are attributable to TechRadar’s 2026 report; the competition organizer’s announcement was not independently checked. The example indicates that AI-generated work is attracting development attention, but it does not by itself show how commonly AI is used in film production or whether the eventual feature will be made wholly with AI.

What Tom Cruise said about human craft

At a BAFTA Life in Pictures event in London in September 2026, Tom Cruise said: “Here’s the thing: There is nothing like human.” Variety Australia reported the remark on September 22 and also said Cruise acknowledged that broader AI use in filmmaking “is coming, and it’s going to happen.” Variety Australia’s report

Cruise’s comments capture a tension between the possibilities of new production tools and the value he places on human experience. They are one filmmaker’s perspective—not evidence that the industry as a whole rejects AI, or that audiences share a single view.

How to read the two developments together

Signal What it supports What it does not establish
Reported growth in searches about films with and without AI People are seeking information or expressing interest in AI’s role in movies. Whether searchers prefer non-AI films, how they respond to a specific film, or what they choose to watch.
Utopai’s description of its PAI engine and film slate One studio says it is combining AI-related technology and workflows with film and television development. Independent proof of PAI’s performance, industry-wide adoption, or production outcomes.
Cruise’s BAFTA remarks A prominent actor and filmmaker says human experience has distinctive value while acknowledging wider AI use is coming. A representative measure of filmmakers’ or viewers’ opinions.

These developments can coexist without proving a public backlash: producers may explore AI tools while people become more curious about which films use them. To show that audiences are actually turning away, stronger evidence would be needed, such as representative attitude surveys or viewing and ticket-buying data tied to AI use. The reported search figures alone cannot answer that question.
