In a 2026-08-29 hands-on review, TechRadar’s James Rogerson said he made the change in about half an hour after finding the original interface “ugly and clunky.” CrossInk added customization and more ways to transfer books, addressing the two issues that make these tiny readers feel limited.
Why the stock Xteink experience feels limited
The X3, X4 Classic and X4 Pro use a proprietary Linux-based operating system rather than Android. That keeps the software lightweight, but it also means there is no familiar app store and no Kindle or Kobo app support. Books are generally handled as DRM-free files, or converted and processed before being copied to the reader.

Transfer is more manual than on mainstream e-readers. The official X4 Classic documentation lists TXT, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, XTCH, XTC and XTCZ files, while warning that MOBI and PDF may require conversion through the official app. The X3 has a narrower official-app workflow. CrossInk does not remove those file-format or DRM constraints; it makes the interface and transfer process less frustrating.

- A less awkward day-to-day experience than the stock software, according to the TechRadar hands-on account.
What it does not do
- It does not turn an Xteink into an Android tablet.
- It does not add Kindle, Kobo or other mainstream reading apps.
- It does not bypass DRM or eliminate the need to manage compatible files.
This is a setup recommendation, not a requirement for every owner. If the stock software meets your needs, there is no reason to flash it. If menus and book transfer are the reason the device feels pointless, alternative firmware is the most consequential change to try.

How to approach the change safely
There is no single, model-independent flashing procedure established for every Xteink revision. Confirm whether your exact reader is a developer or unlocked edition, then use the current guide for that model and firmware release rather than copying commands intended for another device.
- Identify the model. Check whether you have an X3, X4 Classic or X4 Pro and record the current firmware version.
- Back up your files. Copy books and any settings from the included microSD card before changing software.
- Read the model-specific CrossInk instructions. Follow the guide’s required files, card preparation and recovery steps exactly.
- Flash the firmware. Do not interrupt power or remove the card while the update is running.
- Test with a small library. Load a few DRM-free EPUB or TXT files first, then check page turns, fonts, navigation and sleep behavior.
- Keep a recovery path. Retain the stock firmware and original card contents in case you need to restore the factory setup.
After the first boot, test battery behavior under your normal reading pattern. Published battery figures are manufacturer claims or review measurements, not independent standardized tests.

The X3 prioritizes size and weight savings. The X4 Classic gives up some portability for a larger button-only display. The X4 Pro is the most flexible because it adds touch and a frontlight, but it is also the heaviest of the three. X3 and X4 Classic use magnetic pogo-pin charging; the X4 Pro has been reported with a proprietary charger.

Does an Xteink need a reading light?
Yes, if you choose the X3 or X4 Classic and expect to read in bed, on a flight, or in other dim conditions. Neither has a built-in frontlight, so budget for an external light such as Xteink’s magnetic reading light or another low-glare clip-on. The X4 Pro’s frontlight removes that extra accessory for nighttime use.

Storage, cases and phone mounting
MicroSD cards
All three models include a 16GB microSD card and document expansion up to 256GB. The included cards have been described as low quality in comparison coverage, so replacing the card is a sensible reliability upgrade. Copy your library to the new card and verify that the reader indexes it before deleting the backup.
Protection
Use a case or screen protection when carrying the device. E-paper panels are fragile, and the X3 package includes a matte screen protector. A protective cover matters even more if the reader is attached to a phone.

Attaching it to a phone
Phone mounting can be convenient for carrying or viewing, but magnets may shift and pressure can damage the e-paper screen. Treat mounting as a careful experiment: use a secure, padded attachment, keep the reader from sliding, and avoid placing force on the display. It is not a guaranteed secure-mount solution.
Who should buy an Xteink?
- Good match: readers who want an exceptionally small, distraction-free device and are comfortable managing files, microSD cards and firmware.
- Choose the X3: when minimum size and 58g weight matter more than lighting or screen area.
- Choose the X4 Classic: when you prefer physical buttons and a larger 4.3-inch screen for daylight reading.
- Choose the X4 Pro: when you want touch input and a built-in frontlight in one compact reader.
- Look elsewhere: if you expect a polished app ecosystem, automatic bookstore syncing or native Kindle/Kobo applications.
The practical budget should include a light for the unlit models, a replacement or larger microSD card, and protection if the reader will be mounted to a phone. Firmware availability, included accessories and stock can change, so verify the exact model and current instructions before purchase or installation.
