Mobile esports is already a global sports-and-media business, not a collection of casual phone games. Its largest leagues fill international broadcasts, attract millions of simultaneous viewers and support professional teams, women’s competitions, community tournaments and publisher-backed championship circuits.
The strongest evidence points to a huge but uneven ecosystem: Southeast Asia is the center of gravity, while audiences and investment extend into Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas and other regions. Growth is substantial, but it is not guaranteed every year.

How big is mobile esports?
The addressable audience starts with mobile gaming itself. In a 2026 feature, MOONTON cited Newzoo figures valuing mobile gaming at US$113.3 billion, with more than 3 billion players and roughly 56% of global games-industry revenue. Those are market figures quoted by MOONTON from Newzoo, rather than a directly inspected Newzoo report, but they show why publishers can build large competitive ecosystems on phones.

These measurements are not interchangeable. “Hours watched” accumulates viewing time, “peak concurrent viewers” counts the largest number watching at one moment, and neither number is the same as unique people. Platform reporting also cannot count every viewer who watches in-game, through a local broadcast or on an unmeasured channel.
Why Southeast Asia is the center of gravity
Southeast Asia supplies the densest combination of players, fans, teams and regular leagues. MOONTON, again citing Newzoo in 2026, reported that the region represented 47% of mobile-gaming market share and recorded 9.9% year-over-year growth. Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and nearby markets are particularly visible in mobile-esports coverage.
That concentration explains why a fan in North America or Western Europe may underestimate the category. Local television and mainstream sports coverage can be limited in those regions even while an Indonesian or Philippine league is drawing a very large online audience. The audience is also fragmented across YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, Facebook, in-game viewing, local-language channels and co-streamers. A single platform chart therefore shows measured distribution, not a universal census of fans.

What counts as mobile esports?
Mobile esports is an ecosystem with several competitive layers rather than one format.
Publisher-backed professional leagues
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) uses regional Mobile Legends Professional League (MPL) competitions feeding into international events and the M Series world championships. This structure gives teams a recurring season, local rivalries and a route to global competition.

Battle-royale circuits
PUBG Mobile and Garena Free Fire are among the major mobile esports titles tracked through large events and regional competition. Their formats differ from a five-player MOBA: survival, rotations, resource management and multi-team scoring are central, and matches can involve many teams at once.
International invitationals and seasonal circuits
Publishers increasingly combine official leagues with invitationals, seasonal events and global championships. The result is a calendar of competitions instead of a single annual tournament, giving players and organizations more opportunities to qualify, earn prize money and build an audience.
Women’s competitions
Women’s events are a distinct part of the competitive ladder. The 2024 MLBB Women’s Invitational reached 265,117 peak concurrent viewers in its grand final, according to MOONTON and Esports Charts. That figure demonstrates demand for women’s competition while also showing why women’s circuits should be measured on their own terms rather than treated as an afterthought to mixed events.
Community and amateur tournaments
Entry-level events connect ordinary players to organized competition. A 2025 Magic Chess: Go Go tournament in Indonesia drew 512 players and offered a US$5,100 prize pool. It is much smaller than a world championship, but it illustrates how local events can provide the first step toward team play, tournament administration and scouting.
Which mobile esports game is the biggest?
There is no single answer unless “biggest” is defined. MLBB has the clearest evidence of a large, connected international league system: more than 475 million worldwide watch hours in 2024, more than 1 billion cumulative hours for the MPL circuit and an M5 final above 5 million peak concurrent viewers. Those figures support calling MLBB a tier-one mobile esport.

Morten Holst, director of game partnerships and activations at the Esports Foundation, described MLBB as having established itself as a “Tier 1 mobile esport” through the scale of its player base, global audience and international competitive ecosystem. That is an assessment of MLBB’s position, not proof that every metric puts it ahead of every rival in every country.

PUBG Mobile and Garena Free Fire are also major competitive games, particularly where battle-royale formats and local publisher circuits are strong. Their relative size changes by region, platform and measurement period. A fair comparison should use the same event type and metric rather than placing one game’s cumulative circuit total beside another game’s single-event peak.

Is mobile esports bigger than PC esports?
The evidence does not support a universal “mobile is bigger” claim. Mobile gaming has the larger overall player and revenue base cited above, and particular mobile events can reach enormous audiences. However, PC and console esports use different calendars, platforms, regions and measurement systems.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: mobile esports is already comparable to the largest esports properties at specific events and is structurally important in markets where phones are the primary gaming device. It should be judged title by title and region by region, not by assuming that one platform dominates the entire esports industry.
How the mobile-esports business works
Publishers create the competitive infrastructure
Because the game owner controls the rules, servers and broadcast rights, a publisher can connect local leagues to international championships. This creates predictable seasons for teams and recurring content for broadcasters and creators.

Creators expand distribution
Co-streamers and local-language channels make matches easier to discover than a single official broadcast would. The 2025 industry report found YouTube and TikTok gaining share at the Esports World Cup while Twitch’s share declined. That shift does not mean one platform has replaced the others; it shows that mobile audiences follow creators and short-form discovery as well as conventional live channels.
Teams turn viewership into investment
Team participation can involve roster salaries, coaching, content production, travel and marketing. MOONTON reported that Team Vitality’s 2024 acquisition of Bigetron Era’s women’s roster was valued at US$550,000. That reported transaction illustrates that mobile rosters can command significant organizational investment, although one deal is not a market-wide valuation.
Brand value is measurable
MOONTON reported, citing Shikenso Analytics, that the M7 World Championship generated €158.39 million in partner brand value, up 37.7% from M6. “Partner brand value” is an exposure and media-equivalent measurement, not the same thing as cash revenue or profit, so it should be read as evidence of commercial visibility rather than a guaranteed return.

Yes, but the route is a ladder rather than a direct jump from ranked play to a world championship.
- Build measurable skill. Learn one game deeply, maintain a stable device and connection, and track performance across a meaningful sample of matches rather than relying on a short winning streak.
- Enter organized competition. Community tournaments and open events provide experience with schedules, rules, verification, team roles and pressure. The 512-player Magic Chess: Go Go event shows that these competitions can exist below the professional tier.
- Find a reliable team. Communication, attendance and role discipline matter as much as individual mechanics. Teams need clear agreements about practice times, tournament accounts, prize distribution and travel.
- Study the official pathway. Follow the publisher’s current regional rules, qualifiers and roster-registration windows. Requirements vary by game and season, so an old tournament format may no longer apply.
- Publish evidence of performance. Match results, tournament placements and consistent high-level play are more useful to scouts than an isolated highlight clip. Responsible content and communication can also attract teams and co-streaming opportunities.
Professional play is not guaranteed by reaching a particular rank. Competition is selective, contracts differ by region, and income can come from salaries, prize pools, sponsorships, streaming or content rather than one predictable source.
Why growth is not a straight line
Mobile esports can be enormous and still decline from one year to the next. The 2025 Yearly Report from Streams Charts and InvestGame recorded an 11% year-over-year fall in mobile-esports hours watched and a 19% decline in average viewers. The main driver was an 18% drop in MLBB watch hours.
Several factors can move these measurements: event calendars, broadcast changes, regional availability, competing tournaments, platform algorithms and whether fans watch through official channels or creators. A down year does not erase the ecosystem, but it does rule out claims of uninterrupted growth.
What the numbers mean for fans and the industry
For fans, mobile esports offers more than a handful of famous finals. There are regional leagues to follow weekly, international events, women’s tournaments and community competitions that may be easier to enter or watch locally. For teams and publishers, the opportunity is a connected audience spanning game updates, live broadcasts, creator content and in-person events.
The practical answer to “How big is mobile esports?” is therefore qualified but clear: it is a globally connected, commercially measurable sector with especially deep roots in Southeast Asia. Its leading titles already produce major-event audiences, while its year-to-year performance remains volatile and its visibility depends heavily on region, platform and metric.
