William McLaughlin retired from his role as a Forestry England wildlife ranger at Bourne Woods after 37 years, according to a 2026 BBC News report. The report’s headline says 38 years, but its body gives 37; it does not explain the difference.
What McLaughlin did at Bourne Woods
The report describes conservation and deer management as central parts of McLaughlin’s work. He explained that unmanaged deer can graze young vegetation, preventing trees from growing and affecting wildlife in turn.

Forestry England manager Scott Martin said McLaughlin’s deer-management work supported the natural regeneration of native tree species. Martin also credited his collaboration with local conservation groups with helping wildlife in the area. These are Martin’s assessments; the report does not provide population counts, monitoring periods, intervention details or before-and-after measurements to quantify the effects.

The report says McLaughlin was 68 when he retired. Before moving to Lincolnshire in 1990, he had spent 15 years as a gamekeeper in Scotland’s Western Isles. He described his attachment to woodland simply: “I just always loved being in the woods,” and “It was my environment.”

“If your job is your hobby, you don’t work a day in your life,” he said. He also said he expected to keep visiting Bourne Woods after retirement: “The wood is alive – why would you want to be anywhere else?”
What the report does—and does not—establish
Martin praised McLaughlin’s “passion, expertise and dedication,” saying they had made a lasting difference to the forests and wildlife that depend on them. The account is a retirement profile, not an ecological study: it reports no measured outcomes, named research study or statistical series showing changes in woodland health or wildlife. Its biographical figures and quoted assessments should be understood as reported in the article, rather than as independently verified data.
