The Wolf Among Us is Telltale’s five-episode mature noir adventure set in the world of Bill Willingham’s Fables. You play Bigby Wolf—the reformed Big Bad Wolf and sheriff of Fabletown—as he investigates murders among fairy-tale refugees hiding in modern New York.
The game is a prequel to the original Fables comic series. Telltale places it 20 years before the comics, while DC describes it as occurring years before Bigby’s marriage to Snow White and the Fables’ larger conflict with the Adversary. DC’s 2022 guide also characterizes the game as canon. A separate DC digital-first comic, Fables: The Wolf Among Us, adapts and expands the game; it is not the same thing as the original monthly Fables series.

What is The Wolf Among Us?
The Wolf Among Us is an episodic adventure game developed by Telltale and based on the setting and characters of Fables. Its premise combines recognizable fairy-tale figures with hard-boiled detective fiction. Instead of living in enchanted kingdoms, these characters have escaped into the human world and built a concealed community called Fabletown in New York City.

Bigby Wolf serves as Fabletown’s sheriff. In folklore he is the Big Bad Wolf, but the game presents him as a reformed, often mistrusted law officer who can pass as human. When a brutal murder occurs, Bigby’s investigation leads through Fabletown’s political tensions, criminal underworld and long-standing conflicts.

The game is structured as five episodes:

Telltale designed the story around player decisions. What Bigby says, whom he trusts, how aggressively he acts and when the player makes a decision can alter later scenes and relationships. A single playthrough therefore shows one path through the story, not every possible variation.
The story premise: fairy-tale refugees in New York
The central idea comes from Fables: legendary characters have been driven from their homelands by a powerful enemy known as the Adversary. Many settle in the human world, where they must conceal their identities from ordinary people, whom they call “Mundies.” Their hidden neighborhood in Manhattan is Fabletown.
Not every Fable can appear human naturally. Bigby can shapeshift, while others depend on magical glamour charms to maintain a human appearance. Characters who cannot safely blend into human society may be sent to the Farm, a separate community in upstate New York. These rules create the social pressures behind the game’s mystery: secrecy is a legal requirement, glamour is a scarce resource and violence can expose the entire population.

A murder in Fabletown is also a threat to a fragile refugee society. Bigby must investigate while balancing public safety, the community’s secrecy and the distrust many residents still feel toward him because of his history as the Wolf.

Bigby Wolf and the major characters
Bigby Wolf
Bigby is both protagonist and investigator. His human form allows him to work as sheriff, but his identity as the Big Bad Wolf remains central to how other characters see him. He has a violent past, unusual physical power and a reputation that can help intimidate suspects while making peaceful cooperation harder.
The player’s choices define how Bigby performs that job. He can act as a restrained public servant, an intimidating enforcer or something between those extremes. The game’s branching conversations and confrontations make his reputation part of the investigation rather than a fixed character detail.
Snow White
Snow White is one of Fabletown’s most prominent figures and a key member of the familiar storybook cast. Her relationship with Bigby is important to the game’s social and political context. In the wider comic chronology, DC places the game years before Bigby and Snow White marry, so their status here should not be confused with their later history in Fables.
Mister Toad and the Woodsman
Mister Toad and the Woodsman are among the recognizable figures tied to the game and its comic adaptation. Their presence illustrates how The Wolf Among Us recasts traditional fairy-tale characters as residents, workers and suspects within a modern crime story.

The wider Fables cast
The broader Fables world includes characters such as Cinderella, Pinocchio, Rose Red and the Three Little Pigs. Not every member of that ensemble has the same role in the game, but their shared history explains why Fabletown feels like a functioning society rather than a collection of unrelated cameos.
How the game fits into Fables chronology
Telltale describes The Wolf Among Us as a prequel set 20 years before the events of the comics. DC’s 2014 material also presents it as a prequel, placing it years before Bigby’s marriage to Snow White and before the Fables’ major conflict with the Adversary becomes the defining storyline of the comic series.
That timeline gives the game room to tell an original case without retelling the opening of the monthly comic. The characters, setting and history come from Fables, but the murder investigation is created for Telltale’s game. You do not need to know the comic plot to understand the game’s immediate mystery, although familiarity with the setting makes references and character relationships easier to recognize.

That is DC’s official published characterization. Because the game branches according to player choice, “canon” should not be read as a claim that every variation from every playthrough can occupy one perfectly fixed sequence in the monthly comic. It means the game is officially treated as part of the Fables continuity rather than as an unrelated licensed spin-off.

The Wolf Among Us comic is a separate work
“The Wolf Among Us comic” can refer to a work that is easy to confuse with the original Fables comic. DC published a digital-first series titled Fables: The Wolf Among Us. It is based on the Telltale game, officially framed as a prequel and described as both an adaptation and an expansion.
The digital-first comic retells the murder investigation and develops characters introduced through the game. It is therefore a comic adaptation of the game’s story, not the monthly Fables series that supplied the setting and characters in the first place.

The distinction matters when discussing events, format or continuity. Calling the game “the Fables comic” reverses the direction of the adaptation: the game is based on Fables, while the later digital-first comic is based on the game.

Interactive branching versus a fixed page sequence
The game asks the player to choose dialogue, actions and priorities. Those decisions can change later conversations, relationships and scenes. A comic has a fixed sequence determined by its writers and artists. Reading the adaptation gives you one authored version of the case rather than the range of outcomes available through repeated game play.

Investigation as participation versus observation
In the game, you search for information, question suspects and decide how Bigby responds under pressure. The player’s timing can matter as much as the selected words. The comic presents the investigation as a finished narrative, so its pacing and emphasis are controlled by the page rather than by a player.
Shared premise, different emphasis
Both versions use Fabletown, Bigby’s sheriff role and the murder investigation. The game’s strongest distinctive feature is the feeling of inhabiting Bigby’s decisions. The comic’s value is a linear retelling that can be read without operating the game and that expands material introduced in the interactive version.
Where to start if you are new to Fables
- Start with the game for the interactive mystery. You can follow its central case without having read the monthly comic. Pay attention to names, glamour rules and the distinction between Fabletown and the Farm.
- Read the original Fables series for the larger history. It provides the long-term context for the Adversary, the refugee communities and Bigby and Snow White’s later relationship.
- Read the digital-first adaptation when you want a comic version of the game. Treat Fables: The Wolf Among Us as the adaptation and expansion of Telltale’s story, not as a replacement title for the original series.
Readers who prefer a linear format can begin with the digital-first comic, but that route changes the experience from making investigative choices to following an established version of events.
What the announced 2026 and 2027 releases mean
On June 15, 2026, Telltale announced The Wolf Among Us Remastered for holiday 2026, with physical editions planned to follow later in that holiday season. Telltale also announced The Wolf Among Us 2 for 2027. These are announced release plans, not evidence that either product has already been released.
The sequel announcement does not replace the original game’s place in the timeline. The first game remains the five-episode prequel set before the monthly comics, while the sequel is a separate forthcoming continuation of Telltale’s game universe. Availability, final platforms and exact launch dates should be checked against a current Telltale announcement when those details are published.
Common points of confusion
- It is not a direct retelling of the monthly Fables opening. The game tells a new prequel case using the comic’s world.
- “The Wolf Among Us comic” is ambiguous. It may mean DC’s digital-first adaptation, whereas Fables refers to the original monthly series.
- Canon does not erase player choice. DC calls the game canon, but its branching structure means individual playthroughs can differ.
- The game’s setting is not an ordinary fairy-tale kingdom. Fabletown is a concealed refugee community in modern New York, with glamour magic and the Farm shaping daily life.
- Bigby is not simply the villain from the nursery story. He is a reformed Wolf working as sheriff, although his past and powers remain central to the story.
The connection in one sentence
The Wolf Among Us is an officially recognized Fables prequel: a choice-driven, five-episode murder mystery starring Bigby Wolf in Fabletown, set 20 years before the comics, with a separate DC digital-first comic that adapts and expands the game’s story.
