You can also start with The Witcher 3 for a shorter route; its story introduces Geralt’s search for Ciri. Afterward, play its expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
What order should I play The Witcher games in?
The numbered Geralt adventures form the main game sequence. CD PROJEKT RED’s official games catalog lists the three games, while the official Witcher 3 page identifies Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine as expansions to that game.

- The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
- The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone (expansion)
- The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine (expansion)
Play the expansions after the base game. They continue Geralt’s adventures, but they are not separate numbered entries in the main sequence.
Can I start with The Witcher 3?
Yes. If you want a shorter route, start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, then play Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The official game premise centers on Geralt searching for Ciri, giving new players a clear story to follow. Starting there is a practical recommendation, not a guarantee from the developers that the earlier games are irrelevant; the first two games provide more context for Geralt’s story.

Where do Thronebreaker and GWENT fit?
Neither is required to follow the main Geralt sequence. Choose based on whether you want another Witcher-universe story or a card game:
- Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales: An optional story centered on Queen Meve, rather than another numbered Geralt game. Its battles adapt mechanics from GWENT for storytelling, so both its structure and focus differ from the main RPGs. See the official Thronebreaker page for its description and purchase options.
- GWENT: A separate card-game experience, not a story-order requirement. The physical printing described on the official Witcher 3 page is an optional extra, not part of the video-game sequence.
Which play path should you choose?
| Path | Play this | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Complete Geralt story | The Witcher: Enhanced Edition → The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings → The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt → its two expansions | You want the earlier Geralt game narratives as well as the third game. |
| Short route | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt → Hearts of Stone → Blood and Wine | You want to begin with the third game rather than work through the earlier entries. |
| Optional story detour | Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales | You want a separate Witcher-universe story and are interested in story-focused card battles. |
