The Witcher 4 Needs a More Creative Bestiary—The Witcher 3 Shows Why

The Witcher 4 should make monsters more than targets. Its bestiary needs creatures that shape communities, embody local fears, alter the spaces around them and force Ciri to decide what “hunting” really means. The nearly six-minute reveal trailer already points in that direction: Ciri reaches a remote village where a creature demands ritual sacrifice, but the villagers’ fear and prejudice are part of the threat. That is a stronger foundation than another sequence of contracts that ends with a familiar clawed model and a silver-sword finisher.

What The Witcher 4 has confirmed so far

CD PROJEKT RED revealed The Witcher IV on December 13, 2024, as the first game in a new Witcher saga. Ciri is the protagonist, and the project is described as a single-player, open-world RPG built with customized Unreal Engine 5 technology. Game Director Sebastian Kalemba said the team is “kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story!” He also framed the game around what it means to become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path.

The reveal trailer supplies the clearest evidence of the intended bestiary direction. In it, Ciri enters a village governed by generations of ritual fear. A girl is threatened, a creature has power over the settlement, and Ciri chooses to intervene. The conflict is not simply “find and kill the creature.” The village’s customs and prejudice help create the conditions in which the monster can rule. CD PROJEKT RED describes the lesson plainly: “monsters come in all forms.”

Why The Witcher 4 needs a better bestiary

A memorable monster communicates before a quest marker explains it. Senior Character Artist Natalia Kosonowska described the studio’s visual goal as “showing the story without telling it.” Silhouette, clothing, dirt, hair and other material details can establish a character’s history without dialogue. The same principle should govern creatures.

Every creature needs a readable identity

A bestiary entry should not be the first time players understand what they are facing. Movement, habitat, wounds, sounds, feeding habits, rituals and the materials found around a lair should establish an identity. A monster that leaves offerings arranged in a precise pattern tells a different story from one that drags victims into a flooded cellar. Their combat behaviors should reinforce those stories rather than function as interchangeable attack animations.

Contracts should be socially specific

The village in the reveal demonstrates how a monster can be inseparable from human institutions. Who benefits from the ritual? Who is forced to participate? Who is blamed when a sacrifice fails? Those questions make the contract about a community, not just a health bar. The best outcome might involve killing the creature, exposing a lie, changing the ritual or accepting a cost that the villagers would rather hide.

Agency must change the meaning of the hunt

The Witcher 4 level-design team says it is trying to provide “maximum agency while also telling a good story.” That should allow investigation, negotiation, misdirection, mercy and unexpected alliances, but each option needs authored consequences. Randomly branching outcomes are not enough. A spared creature should alter a settlement, a later contract or Ciri’s reputation in a way the player can recognize.

What a Witcher 3 mission teaches the new game

Consider The Whispering Hillock, one of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s most discussed monster quests. The entity beneath the ancient tree is tied to the surrounding swamp, the orphaned children, the village’s history and the Crones’ power. Investigation reveals that the apparent “monster” is also a prisoner with its own account of events. The player’s decision can save some people while endangering others, and the consequences extend beyond the encounter itself.

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.

That mission remains memorable because its creature is connected to a place, a group and a moral choice. Remove the model and combat abilities and the scenario still works as a story about competing claims, compromised rescue and the cost of intervention. That is the standard The Witcher 4 should meet with its own contracts.

Design axis The Witcher 3 case-study lesson What the Witcher 4 reveal suggests
Monster identity The tree spirit’s history is inseparable from its appearance and lair. Use silhouette and environmental clues to tell a story before exposition.
Community relationship Villagers, children and the Crones all have different stakes. Make ritual, fear and prejudice part of the contract.
Investigation Clues force the player to reconstruct conflicting accounts. Let Ciri discover who benefits from a monster’s reputation.
Moral ambiguity There is no clean rescue that erases every cost. Make mercy and violence produce distinct, visible consequences.
Player agency A choice changes lives beyond the immediate fight. Support authored branches rather than cosmetic dialogue options.
Environmental integration The swamp, tree and nearby settlements are part of the problem. Design caves, weather, villages and local economies around each creature.
Aftermath The quest’s effects persist after the contract appears complete. Allow settlements and future encounters to remember Ciri’s decision.

Design monsters and spaces together

The Witcher 4’s level-design discussion describes collaboration across world design, encounters, gameplay, art and quests. That approach matters because a monster dropped into a generic cave will feel generic even if its model is elaborate. A creature that nests in a quarry should affect workers, supply routes, weathered tools and the price of local materials. A river predator should change ferries, fishing schedules and the clues Ciri can follow along the banks.

Marcin Klicki, the project’s Expert Monster Coordinator and a creator of many Witcher 3 monsters, has identified the Toad Prince as his favorite creature, while also praising the forest witches and trolls. Those examples span grotesque fantasy, folklore and character-driven encounters. Their value is not merely visual variety; each carries a different tone, behavior and cultural afterlife.

How unusual monster ideas can survive production

The team’s stated workflow offers a practical route for making ambitious contracts without losing control of scope.

  • PLAY AS A HIGHLY TRAINED MONSTER SLAYER FOR HIRE: Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
  • Gruesomely destroy foes as a professional monster hunter armed with a range of upgradeable weapons, mutating potions, and combat magic.
  • Hunt down a wide variety of exotic monsters, from savage beasts prowling mountain passes to cunning supernatural predators lurking in the shadowy back alleys of densely populated cities. Invest your rewards to upgrade your weaponry and buy custom armor, or spend them on horse races, card games, fist fighting, and other pleasures life brings.
  • EXPLORE A MORALLY AMBIGUOUS FANTASY OPEN WORLD: Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity. Traverse a fantastical open world: explore forgotten ruins, caves, and shipwrecks, trade with merchants and dwarven smiths in cities, and hunt across the open plains, mountains, and seas. Deal with treasonous generals, devious witches, and corrupt royalty to provide dark and dangerous services. Make choices that go beyond good & evil, and face their far-reaching consequences.
  • TRACK DOWN THE CHILD OF PROPHECY: Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world. In times of war, chase down the child of prophecy, a living weapon foretold by ancient elven legends. Struggle against ferocious rulers, spirits of the wilds, and even a threat from beyond the veil – all hell-bent on controlling this world. Define your destiny in a world that may not be worth saving.
  1. Start with a paper pitch. Define the fantasy, emotional purpose, gameplay beats, scope and technical complexity before building the full quest.
  2. Build a small playable draft. Test the core interaction—tracking, bargaining, changing a ritual or fighting under unusual conditions—before investing in final art.
  3. Check the whole space. Verify that the creature changes the level, encounter rhythm, clues and local population rather than existing as a disconnected battle.
  4. Author the consequences. Decide what the village, economy, characters and later quests remember after Ciri leaves.

This process is especially important for creatures that are not designed around a standard arena fight. Early prototypes can reveal whether an idea is genuinely engaging or merely sounds unusual in a pitch.

What would make monster contracts feel less repetitive?

  • Give each contract a distinct social conflict, not only a new enemy type.
  • Use visual design to reveal age, diet, habitat and history before the bestiary entry appears.
  • Make clues point to motives and institutions as well as tracks and corpses.
  • Offer meaningful solutions—combat, negotiation, deception, mercy or alliance—with authored trade-offs.
  • Let the surrounding map respond through changed routines, prices, routes, weather or population.
  • Make the aftermath visible so the player understands that the decision mattered.

The Witcher 4 does not need to abandon the pleasure of preparation, potions and a carefully chosen blade. It needs to ensure that those systems serve contracts with identities of their own. Ciri’s journey can make the bestiary feel new by treating every monster as a character, a social force and a moral test—not merely the next entry in a checklist.

Why replaying The Witcher 3 still helps

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, along with its major expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, remains the clearest reference point for how authored monster quests can combine investigation, place and consequence. Replaying a favorite mission before The Witcher 4 arrives is useful not because every old design should be copied, but because it makes the important question unavoidable: would this encounter still be memorable if the creature’s model and combat moves were removed? If the answer is no, the new game has an opportunity to write deeper contracts.
