The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is a strong reason to return to Geralt’s world, but it is a refinement rather than a new game. Its visual upgrades are joined by meaningful quality-of-life changes to progression, combat, menus and traversal. GamesRadar+’s PC review found the result more satisfying overall, with occasional slowdowns in busy scenes and some character models that look uncanny as the main reservations.
Verdict: a better way to play, not a different RPG
The Remastered release keeps the recognizable open-world RPG at its center and smooths out friction around it. The most persuasive changes are not limited to prettier scenery: a redesigned skill tree makes character building easier to follow, while clearer quest tracking, more legible menus and less frustrating movement help the sprawling adventure flow better.

GamesRadar+ reviewer Hayes Madsen, writing after playing the PC version with a publisher-provided code, concluded that the update “doesn’t make the massive RPG feel like a new game,” but improves enough facets to bring out its strengths. The review’s broader verdict: “the sprawling RPG has simply never been better.” Those are qualitative judgments, not the result of a standardized test across platforms.

What’s new in The Witcher 3 Remastered?
The changes span presentation and day-to-day play. CD Projekt RED says the release improves textures, foliage, lighting, rendering and ray tracing, and adds combat animations and finishers, an adaptive camera and a reworked skill tree. The company describes the progression update as offering “deeper flexibility and greater impact on your playstyle.” That is the publisher’s feature description; the review’s hands-on assessment is more useful for understanding how the changes feel in play.

Visuals and animation
Madsen found the overhaul most apparent in lighting and environments, and also noted updated hair physics and character animation. The changes refresh the presentation without transforming the game’s identity. One trade-off in the reviewer’s experience was that some characters looked uncanny after the visual update.
Progression and combat
The redesigned skill tree was the reviewer’s standout gameplay improvement: it was easier to understand and made building a character feel more satisfying. Combat also gets a closer “Modern” camera, additional Sign effects, finishers and idle animations, alongside small changes to enemy behavior. These are the reviewer’s observations, not measured claims about combat balance or difficulty.
Menus, quests and movement
Clearer menus and codex navigation make information easier to find. The review also highlights clearer Witcher senses, easier quest tracking, improved climbing and fewer moments when Roach gets caught on trees. Individually these are modest adjustments; together they reduce interruptions during exploration.
Performance and the review’s caveats
In the PC version, Madsen reported occasional slowdowns in busy scenes and combat encounters. The review does not provide controlled frame-rate or load-time benchmarks, so it cannot establish how frequently performance issues occur for other players, hardware configurations or platforms. The reviewer also reported some uncanny-looking characters, a subjective visual drawback rather than a universal finding.
The review says CD Projekt RED had committed to performance improvements, but it does not establish that a specific fix has shipped. The publisher’s description of improved performance is a feature claim, not independent benchmark evidence.

Release date, platforms and free-upgrade details
CD Projekt RED announced the Remastered release for September 29, 2026. Its release announcement lists GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The product page identifies PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 as platforms for the Remastered upgrade.
The publisher says the upgrade is free for owners on supported platforms, and that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included and available at no extra cost to base-game owners. Upgrade rights depend on supported platform ecosystems and storefronts, so check the edition and account where you own the game before buying it again. The product page also says existing saves remain compatible.

The GamesRadar+ review covers PC only, so it does not establish that the versions on console or Switch 2 perform better or worse.
Is The Witcher 3 Remastered worth revisiting?
For returning players, the case is strongest if you value smoother progression and exploration as much as visual polish. The skill-tree redesign, clearer navigation and traversal adjustments address small points of friction across a long adventure, while the presentation refresh gives familiar places a new look. The result remains recognizably The Witcher 3, not a replacement for it.
For someone who already owns the game, first verify upgrade eligibility through the platform account and storefront tied to that copy. For someone who does not, compare the available edition and platform before purchasing; the publisher says both major expansions are part of the Remastered offering. The review supports an overall positive recommendation, but its PC-only experience is not a cross-platform performance verdict.
