That tied it with Sektori for the highest Metascore on Metacritic’s 2026 list at the time. “Officially the best-reviewed game of the year” goes further than the evidence. What exists is a dated, early, PC-only tie that can still move.
Is The Witcher 3 Remastered the best-reviewed game of 2026?
Not definitively. The accurate statement is that, as of September 30, 2026, it shared the top Metascore of the year with Sektori at 94. Three things keep that from being a settled verdict:

- Small sample. Ten critic reviews is an early count. Scores of this kind often shift as more outlets publish.
- One platform. The 94 applies to the PC version. The Ruling Desk reported that the PS5, Xbox Series X and Switch 2 versions had too few reviews to receive Metascores.
- Unconfirmed since. A copy of Metacritic’s 2026 ranking page captured on October 5, 2026 lists Sektori first at 94 but does not show the remaster among the visible top entries. That capture doesn’t prove the remaster dropped. It just means its current placement can’t be confirmed from it. The remaster’s own Metacritic page could not be checked.
There is also no year-end outcome to report. The year is still in progress, and late releases can change the list.

What reviewers are reported to praise
The roundup characterizes the reviews as praising the visuals and lighting, while some reviewers still note combat or movement that feels dated. Those are the outlets’ judgments as summarized by The Ruling Desk. This article doesn’t rest on first-hand play. For a game released in 2015, a high score for a remaster is as much about the quality of the underlying game as about the new work.
When it launched and what it costs
The remaster launched on September 29, 2026. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a free upgrade for eligible owners on the supported platform ecosystems, including owners of physical copies. Entitlement is tied to the platform you already own the game on, so check the official announcement for your platform before assuming an upgrade path.
For new players, the game is sold on Battle.net and the Microsoft Store, the latter as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. If you already own the game on an eligible platform, you shouldn’t need to buy it again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBoth story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are included in the upgrade. That holds even for owners who previously had only the base game, so there’s no reason to buy them separately for the remaster.

These details come from CD PROJEKT RED’s official patch notes, dated September 28, 2026, and its Press Center release of September 29.
Skill system
Skills are reorganized into a tree with three ranks per skill. Because the system changed, skill points are reset. Anyone returning to an old save should expect to respec.
Quest tracking
Quests you aren’t tracking now get distinct map markers, which should make side content easier to separate from your active objective.

Bard’s Ballad is an accessibility preset. The patch notes say: “It is designed to reduce cognitive load for players who experience mental fatigue or have difficulty concentrating.”
Visuals, animation and mods
The notes list rendering and visual updates, new gameplay and animation work, interface changes, and cross-platform mod support. The press release also cites improved combat and animations.
PC and console specifics
- PC: path tracing, plus support for NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4 and Intel XeSS 2.0.
- PS5 Pro: a ray-tracing mode targeting 60 frames per second, and a performance mode of up to 90 frames per second with VRR. These are the studio’s stated targets, not measured results. Performance reports belong to the outlets that test specific hardware.
How to read the claim when you see it
When a headline calls a game the “best-reviewed” of the year, check five things: which aggregator and metric, the capture date, the platform, the number of critic reviews, and whether another game shares the score. Here the answers are Metacritic Metascore, September 30, PC, ten reviews, and yes, a tie with Sektori. Until console versions are scored and the count grows, the 94 is a strong early result, not a final ranking.
