What happened after The Witcher 3 Remastered launched?
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The remastered release includes the previously released Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. The publisher says the upgrade is free for anyone who owns the base game. The launch coincided with a sharp rise in player activity and sales estimates. Alinea Analytics reported that the game’s daily active users across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox rose to about 2.4 million on September 30, the day after launch. The firm said that was more than ten times its estimate of the game’s 2026 daily average. That figure is an analyst estimate, not a publisher-reported count, and its platform breakdown does not include Nintendo Switch 2.

How big was the new Steam player record?
SteamDB recorded an all-time peak of 137,724 concurrent players on October 4, 2026. “Concurrent” means players active at the same time on Steam, not the number of unique players over a day and not a total across all platforms. SteamDB’s chart is the source for the peak and its date.

The record followed an earlier increase reported by PC Gamer: 123,359 simultaneous Steam players on October 3, citing SteamDB. The next day’s higher SteamDB reading superseded that earlier peak. Neither figure captures PlayStation, Xbox or Switch 2 activity.
What do the 2.4 million users and 130,000 sales figures mean?
Alinea Analytics’ October 1, 2026 newsletter estimated about 2.4 million daily active users across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox on the day after launch. Its split was Steam 48.6%, PlayStation 40.4% and Xbox 11.0%. The estimate includes active users as counted by Alinea; it does not establish that every user was returning, or include Switch 2. Alinea’s estimates and platform breakdown are third-party analytics, not audited platform or publisher figures.
The same analysis estimated about 130,000 copies sold across those three platforms that day, describing it as the game’s largest daily sales result since its first $3.99 Steam discount in summer 2024. This is a one-day estimate for The Witcher 3, not a confirmed figure for separately sold remaster copies. Since existing base-game owners receive the remaster as a free upgrade, the launch audience and the number of new purchases are not interchangeable.

CD PROJEKT RED’s first-half 2026 announcement put The Witcher 3’s lifetime sales above 65 million copies and the franchise total above 90 million. The publisher’s figure is cumulative, not a remaster-specific sales tally. Alinea Analytics later estimated that The Witcher 3 had passed 66 million copies; that higher number is the firm’s estimate rather than an updated official publisher total.
In commentary on the company’s first-quarter 2026 results, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said the game had “just crossed another spectacular sales threshold: 65 million copies,” as reproduced by PC Gamer. That milestone helps put the new activity in context, but does not show how many copies the remaster itself sold.
Do existing owners need to buy the remaster?
No. CD PROJEKT RED says owners of the base game can download the remastered release for free, including both expansions. Newcomers should check the current edition and platform listing to make sure it includes the game and content they want; prices and availability can vary by store and were not established in the announcements cited here.
