CD Projekt Red says The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered grew from a broader effort to modernize the game, not just to upgrade its Nintendo Switch 2 visuals. In an interview with RPG Site published October 8, 2026, Senior Publishing Producer Oleg Shatulo discussed the remaster’s goals, Switch 2 DLSS, save transfers, PC storefronts and platform-specific features. The practical save-transfer rule is clear: older-version saves can move forward into Remastered, but Remastered saves cannot move back to older versions.

Shatulo said the remaster took shape as the team looked for ways to push its technology while developing the new expansion Songs of the Past. The stated goal was to modernize both gameplay and visuals while keeping the identity of the original game intact.

He cited more than a decade of player feedback and named combat, character progression, controls, the user interface, accessibility and technical presentation as areas the team wanted to address. Why the Switch 2 version became part of the remaster
The Switch 2 project began as a possible straightforward upgrade after the team’s work bringing Cyberpunk 2077 to Nintendo’s console. Shatulo said the newer hardware offered more room to improve visuals and performance than the original Switch. The work was later folded into the wider Remastered effort across current-generation platforms.

Shatulo said the team developed the Switch 2 and PS5 Pro versions without direct participation from Nintendo or Sony developers, while still receiving platform-specific guidance and support from both companies.

How cross-saves and Switch transfers work
Cross-progression is not the same as unrestricted two-way compatibility. A save from an older version can be brought forward into Remastered, but a Remastered save cannot be returned to an older version. Shatulo pointed to the revamped skill tree as one example of a change that makes backward compatibility difficult. Supported Remastered platforms can share compatible saves through cross-progression.

The transfer is not automatic just because the old save is on the console. Players must use CD PROJEKT RED Account cross-progression to upload the original Switch save, then continue with it in the Remastered version on Switch 2.

Achievements and trophies
Shatulo said achievements and trophies do not automatically unlock when a player imports a save through cross-progression. Each platform tracks them separately. By contrast, same-platform upgrades carry saves and achievement or trophy progress forward, according to the interview; Switch 2 is an exception to the update-delivery approach.
What the interview says about Switch 2 DLSS and performance
Shatulo described the team’s experience with Cyberpunk 2077 as a useful foundation for DLSS on Switch 2, but not a ready-made solution. He said The Witcher 3 has a different rendering pipeline, content and performance profile, so the team tuned its implementation to balance image quality and performance.

The interview gives no resolution, frame-rate or image-quality benchmark figures. Shatulo also said parity with the DX12 version of the Next-Gen release was a priority for handheld play, including on Steam Deck, and that visual improvements were not intended to come at the expense of lower-powered PC hardware. These are stated development priorities, not tested performance results.

Which platform features are confirmed?
- Controls: The interview says the game carries forward DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback and supports Switch 2 HD Rumble 2, mouse controls, gyro aiming and motion controls.
- PC storefronts: The Microsoft Store Play Anywhere release is a standalone PC version, separate from Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Battle.net. Shatulo said it will maintain feature parity with the other PC versions and support movement between Xbox and PC through Play Anywhere.
- Regional content: Shatulo said Remastered adds no new region-specific content changes beyond requirements already present in earlier versions under applicable local rules.
What CD Projekt Red has not confirmed
Asked whether Switch 2 would get a 60fps mode later and whether PS5 Pro would receive an additional ray-tracing feature, Shatulo replied, “We have nothing to share here.” That is not confirmation that either feature is planned, nor does it establish that one has been cancelled.

The same answer applied to questions about new music, a possible The Witcher 2 remaster, a physical release and a new artbook. The interview provides no details on those subjects.
Is Remastered the version newcomers should play?
Shatulo recommended Remastered to newcomers, saying it preserves what players valued while adding visual, gameplay and quality-of-life changes. That is the producer’s recommendation, rather than an independent comparison of the available versions.
