How do you open Photo Mode in The Witcher 3? On PC, press U. On PlayStation, press L3 + R3 (click both sticks). On Xbox, press LS + RS. The current Remastered release, launched on September 29, 2026, adds a much larger set of camera, character, environment and composition controls than the basic shortcut-and-capture instructions found in older guides.
This guide separates the original support-page controls from the Remastered feature set, shows where captures are stored on each documented platform, and gives a repeatable workflow for building a shot without claiming undocumented keybindings.

Quick answer: Photo Mode shortcuts and capture locations
CD PROJEKT RED’s support page lists the following inputs and storage paths. Use the platform’s current system software labels if a menu has been renamed.
Recommended Free Tools
| Platform | Open Photo Mode | Where captures are listed |
|---|---|---|
| PC | U | %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots |
| PlayStation | L3 + R3 | Settings → Storage → System Storage → Capture Gallery → The Witcher 3 |
| Xbox | LS + RS | Xbox button → Capture & share → Recent captures |
These are the controls and destinations documented by the official Photo Mode support page. The retrieved support text does not provide a Nintendo Switch 2 shortcut or a Switch 2 capture-library path, so use the console’s own capture library rather than assuming one of the paths above applies.

Which version of The Witcher 3 has the expanded Photo Mode?
The Remastered release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched on September 29, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Its feature notes describe a revised Photo Mode interface with options that were “vastly expanded.” That wording matters: a tutorial written for the earlier release may correctly explain how to enter Photo Mode while omitting the controls now visible in Remastered.
CD PROJEKT RED says qualifying owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S can upgrade for free. The announcement also describes a Switch-to-Switch 2 claim path. Eligibility is tied to the account and store you use, so check the official Remastered announcement and your platform account before assuming an upgrade applies.
Remastered is available on the four platforms named above; the official product page is the current platform overview. The shortcut table in this article remains useful for returning players because the documented activation inputs are platform-specific, while the expanded controls are accessed inside the Photo Mode interface.

PC: press U
On the PC version covered by the support page, press U to enter Photo Mode. If the key does nothing, make sure the game window has focus and that another application has not captured the keyboard. Once the mode opens, use the on-screen controls rather than relying on an older key chart: the Remastered notes enumerate the available functions but do not publish a complete keyboard binding for every new setting.
PlayStation: click both sticks
On PlayStation, press L3 and R3 together. L3 means pressing the left analog stick; R3 means pressing the right analog stick. If one click registers before the other, release both sticks and press them at the same time again. The official shortcut applies to the PlayStation control scheme listed by support; Remastered itself is the PlayStation 5 release.
Xbox: click both sticks
On Xbox, press LS and RS together. LS and RS are the left- and right-stick clicks. After entering Photo Mode, follow the labels shown in the current build for camera movement, presets and scene controls, because the release notes describe features rather than a universal button map.
Nintendo Switch 2
The Remastered announcement includes Nintendo Switch 2 as a supported platform, but the retrieved support page does not state a Switch 2 Photo Mode shortcut. Do not infer that it uses U, L3 + R3 or LS + RS. Open the in-game controls/help screen or consult a Switch 2-specific support entry supplied for your region.

Where are Witcher 3 screenshots saved?
PC folder
Open File Explorer and paste %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots into the address bar. This is the folder path listed by CD PROJEKT RED’s support page. If Windows expands the environment variable to a different drive or user folder, that is normal: the variable points to your current Windows profile. Check the folder immediately after taking a shot so you can confirm that the game and your document location match.
PlayStation Capture Gallery
From the console home screen, go to Settings → Storage → System Storage → Capture Gallery → The Witcher 3, following the path supplied by support. Sony’s menu names can change with system software revisions; if your interface uses a newer Gallery or Media label, use the console’s capture-library search for the game title.
Xbox Recent captures
Press the Xbox button, open Capture & share, then choose Recent captures. The support page lists this as the destination rather than a game-specific disk folder. From there, use the console’s normal save, edit or share commands.
Switch 2 capture library
No Switch 2 screenshot location is specified in the official passages used for this guide. Nintendo’s system capture interface may use labels that differ by software version and region, so check the console’s Album or capture-management screen instead of applying the PlayStation or Xbox path.
What settings are in the Remastered Photo Mode?
The September 28, 2026 Remastered feature notes list the following additions and interface changes. They are options inside Photo Mode, not separate utilities or required accessories.
Multiple characters, poses and expressions
You can place multiple characters in one frame. Geralt and other placeable characters have selectable poses and expressions, allowing a scene to be staged rather than captured only from live gameplay. Select the character you want to direct, choose the available pose, then adjust the expression before returning to camera composition.
Camera lock and reusable presets
Photo Mode can lock the camera position while you refine the scene. It can also save camera presets so you can reuse a viewpoint or angle. A practical sequence is to find the broad framing first, lock the camera while making character and weather adjustments, and save the viewpoint when you expect to recreate the shot.

- Figure may vary as ultra rare Chase Figure may be received
- Showcased in The Witcher themed window box packaging
Aspect-ratio controls
Remastered lets you change the screenshot aspect ratio. Choose the target shape early because a landscape, square or portrait-oriented frame changes where the subject can sit without cropping. The ratio also affects the composition guides described below.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First-person camera and collision toggle
A first-person camera mode is available, as is a camera-collision toggle. First person can create an eye-level or in-world viewpoint; the collision option changes whether the camera is constrained by surrounding geometry. Use the setting that gives you the intended perspective, then check the edges of the frame for objects that may have entered view.
Environment, weather and time of day
Environment presets provide a starting scene. You can adjust weather and time of day, and tune weather-effect intensity. These controls let you coordinate lighting and atmosphere with the subject: a clear preset may keep details readable, while stronger weather intensity can make rain, snow or fog a visible part of the composition.
Rule-of-Thirds guides and cinematic bars
Rule-of-Thirds lines can be displayed in different aspect ratios. Optional cinematic bars add a letterboxed look. Use the lines to place a face, weapon or horizon near an intersection rather than centering every element; turn the overlay off before the final capture if you want an unobstructed image. If you use bars, verify that they complement the selected aspect ratio instead of hiding important details.
Camera coordinates
The interface displays camera coordinates. Record them when a location or angle is difficult to reproduce, or combine them with a saved preset for a repeatable setup. Coordinates identify the camera position; they do not replace decisions about pose, expression, weather or framing.

NPC visibility and placeable props
You can hide surrounding non-player characters to remove crowd clutter while retaining the characters you deliberately placed. Remastered also includes placeable props. A prop near the foreground can frame a subject or add narrative context, but check that it does not cover a face, weapon or key environmental detail.
Mouse cursor on PC
On PC with a mouse, the cursor is visible in Photo Mode. Move it deliberately when selecting controls and inspect the final composition for any interface element that the game displays before capturing.

- Incredibly detailed 7” scale figure based off The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Video Game
- Designed with Ultra Articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing
- Geralt features his classic Viper Armor dyed teal like you can do in game
- Includes silver sword, steel sword, and base
- Showcased in The Witcher themed window box packaging
A repeatable workflow for a clean shot
- Enter the mode and choose the frame shape. Press the platform shortcut, then select the aspect ratio that matches the image you intend to keep. Establishing the shape first prevents late cropping from cutting off a character or landmark.
- Build the broad composition. Move the camera until the subject, horizon and major background elements are balanced. Turn on the Rule-of-Thirds overlay or cinematic bars when they help you judge placement.
- Set the scene. Pick an environment preset, then adjust time of day, weather and weather-effect intensity. Make these choices before fine character direction so the lighting and atmosphere inform the pose.
- Direct the characters. Add the characters needed for the story, select their poses and expressions, and hide nearby NPCs that distract from the frame. Keep checking the selected aspect ratio as each character is added.
- Add controlled foreground detail. Place props only when they support the composition. A prop can provide depth or context, but move or remove it if it blocks the subject.
- Refine and make the view repeatable. Try first-person mode or the camera-collision toggle when the default perspective cannot reach the desired angle. Lock the camera while making small adjustments, save a preset, and note the displayed coordinates if you may need the shot again.
- Capture and verify. Take the screenshot, then open the documented PC folder or console capture library immediately. Verification catches a wrong folder, an unexpected crop or a scene change before you dismantle the setup.
Platform-aware troubleshooting
The shortcut does not open Photo Mode
- On PC, confirm that the game has keyboard focus and press U once; avoid assuming that a remapped key from another game applies here.
- On PlayStation or Xbox, click both sticks together rather than holding one stick and then the other.
- On Switch 2, consult the in-game controls or a platform-specific support page because the retrieved official shortcut list does not document that console.
The capture is not where you expected
- On PC, paste the complete environment-variable path into File Explorer and check that the active Windows profile is the one you used to run the game.
- On PlayStation, follow the Capture Gallery path and account for revised system-menu wording.
- On Xbox, open Recent captures from Capture & share; the support listing does not direct you to a Witcher-specific disk folder.
- On Switch 2, use the console’s current capture-library interface because no official path is supplied in the cited material.
An older tutorial shows fewer controls
Older instructions may describe entering Photo Mode but not the Remastered interface. Check for the current options—character placement, poses, expressions, camera lock, presets, aspect ratio, first-person view, collision, environment and weather controls, guides, coordinates, NPC hiding and props—before concluding that a feature is missing.
You need an exact binding for a new option
The official Remastered notes enumerate the features but do not publish a complete key-by-key map for every new setting. Use the labels and prompts displayed in your platform’s current Photo Mode UI rather than copying an unverified keyboard or controller chart.
Original support instructions versus the Remastered feature set
The distinction below prevents a common mistake: treating the concise support entry as a complete description of the current mode.
| Area | Support-page documentation | Remastered notes |
|---|---|---|
| Entry point | Platform shortcuts: U on PC, L3 + R3 on PlayStation, LS + RS on Xbox | Uses the in-game Photo Mode interface with an updated UI |
| Camera | Shortcut and capture guidance | Camera lock, reusable camera presets, first-person mode, collision toggle and displayed coordinates |
| Framing | Capture destinations | Selectable aspect ratios, Rule-of-Thirds lines for different ratios and optional cinematic bars |
| Characters | Shortcut and library paths | Multiple placeable characters with selectable poses and expressions |
| Scene control | Shortcut and library paths | Environment presets, time-of-day and weather adjustment, plus weather-intensity control |
| Cleanup and staging | Shortcut and library paths | Hide surrounding NPCs and add placeable props |
| PC interface | PC shortcut and Windows folder | Mouse cursor is visible in Photo Mode |
The support entry is still the authoritative quick reference for the listed shortcuts and capture destinations; the dated Remastered notes are the source for the expanded creative controls.
Upgrade and ownership checks
If you already own the game, compare your account and store with the eligibility described by CD PROJEKT RED before buying another copy. The announcement names GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S qualifying owners for free upgrades and separately describes a Switch-to-Switch 2 claim path. Store policies, account ownership and regional availability can affect what your library displays, so verify the offer in the account where your original license is registered.
If you are purchasing the game, select a platform-matched The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered or Complete Edition listing and confirm the edition before checkout. Photo Mode is built into the game; a special controller, camera or PC utility is not required.
