If The Witcher 3 is crashing, stuttering, or running at low FPS, first confirm whether you are using the December 2022 Next-Gen Update or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. Install the newest patch offered for that edition before changing settings; the directly relevant official note is hotfix 5.00c, dated October 1, 2026, which reverted a HairWorks change linked to serious performance and visual problems for some players. Then verify the game files, disable overlays and unnecessary background software, and clean-install or roll back the graphics driver when the timing points to a driver change.
Check your edition and patch before troubleshooting
Advice for the 2022 Next-Gen Update is not automatically valid for the later Remastered edition. On PC, open the game’s title screen, launcher entry, or installed-game information and record the exact edition and build number. Also note whether you launch through Steam, GOG, Epic, or another supported store.

The December 2022 update added demanding options including PC ray tracing, DLSS, and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution support across next-generation platforms. It also introduced faster loading and console graphics modes. The current Remastered release has its own requirements and patches. Install the current update available for your platform before testing older workarounds.

CD PROJEKT RED’s October 1, 2026 hotfix 5.00c says it “Reverted a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users.” If your symptoms began after a recent update and HairWorks is enabled, patch first, then retest with HairWorks off. Do not assume that a 5.00c fix for Remastered changes the behavior of an older 2022 installation.

Use this order for PC problems
Run the checks in sequence and change one variable at a time. That makes it possible to identify whether the trigger is the game build, files, an overlay, a driver, or a graphics setting.
- Confirm the edition, patch number, launcher, Windows version, CPU, GPU, driver version, resolution, and graphics preset.
- Compare your hardware with the requirements for that exact edition.
- Verify the installed game files in your launcher.
- Disable overlays and close nonessential software.
- Clean-install the current graphics driver using the GPU manufacturer’s instructions.
- If the fault started immediately after a driver update, test the immediately previous driver.
- Reduce demanding rendering options one at a time, beginning with output resolution and ray tracing or path tracing.
- If the problem remains, collect a reproducible description, a video if possible, and any save file tied to the failure for official support.
Confirm the requirements for your version
The current PC requirements page has separate Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing configurations. Its expected frame rates come from publisher quality-assurance testing, not a guarantee for every scene or computer. Performance can fluctuate with the location, gameplay activity, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution.
Resolution is especially important: CD PROJEKT RED states that “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS.” A system that is acceptable at 1920×1080 can become GPU-limited at 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 without any change to the processor or memory.

The newer technical enhancements require an SSD according to the current requirements page. That is a platform requirement for the enhanced build, not proof that buying an SSD will cure an unknown crash or stutter.
Windows 10 may still run the game, but it is no longer officially supported or tested. CD PROJEKT RED says, “That doesn’t mean that the game will stop running on Windows 10 with the next game update,” while also warning that future compatibility and performance cannot be guaranteed. Treat Windows 10 as a compatibility risk rather than an automatic explanation for every fault.
GPU generation and driver support
The requirements page explains that, because Game Ready Driver support ended for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta, the publisher selected the Turing-based GTX 1660 as its minimum NVIDIA GPU. This is the publisher’s hardware-selection statement, not an independent performance guarantee. Older GPUs can therefore fall outside the supported baseline even if an earlier game build ran acceptably.

Verify the game files
Corrupted or incomplete files can produce startup crashes, crashes while loading a save, missing textures, or unexplained instability. Verification replaces only files the launcher identifies as damaged or missing; it normally does not remove your saves. Close the game before starting.

If the launcher reports that files were repaired, reproduce the original failure before making another change. If verification finds nothing, continue to overlays and drivers rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
Disable overlays and isolate background software
Overlays hook into the game’s rendering or input path. The official performance guidance specifically calls out Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and Galaxy overlays. Turn each overlay off in its host application, then fully exit the host application rather than leaving it minimized.
Close unnecessary programs, including hardware-monitoring utilities and antivirus or anti-malware tools, for a controlled test. This is a temporary isolation step, not advice to uninstall security software or leave the computer unprotected. Re-enable protection immediately after testing.
- Disable one overlay at a time if you need to identify the conflict.
- Do not run multiple frame counters, capture tools, RGB controllers, or hardware monitors during the first clean test.
- Record whether the crash occurs before the main menu, when loading a save, or only after playing for a while.
- If the game becomes stable, re-enable applications individually to find the conflicting component.
Clean-install or roll back the graphics driver
A driver can be corrupted, incompletely updated, or incompatible with a particular game build. CD PROJEKT RED’s crash and performance guidance recommends removing old driver versions before installing the current driver. Use the GPU maker’s current procedure rather than a driver number chosen for someone else’s hardware.

Download the driver for your exact GPU from NVIDIA’s official driver-download service. Choose the clean-install option when offered, or follow NVIDIA’s current instructions for removing the existing package before reinstalling it. Restart Windows and test the game with overlays still disabled.

AMD
Use AMD Support for the driver that matches your GPU and Windows edition. AMD also provides a cleanup utility; follow its current documentation if a normal reinstall does not remove the previous package cleanly. Restart before launching the game again.
When a rollback is the right test
If crashes or severe stutter began directly after a driver update, test the immediately previous driver that worked on your system. The publisher notes that an older driver can sometimes help. A rollback is a diagnostic comparison, not a universal recommendation: keep the version that is stable for your GPU and game edition, and revisit the current driver after a later game or driver patch.
Reduce rendering load without guessing
Make one graphics change, test the same scene, and record the result. A setting that raises average FPS can still leave a particular area or effect unstable, so judge both frame rate and frame-time consistency.

Do not interpret a lower preset as proof that the original preset was defective. It establishes whether the system is operating beyond a stable workload for that scene, resolution, or feature combination.
Fix “The Witcher 3 keeps crashing on PC” by symptom
Crash before the main menu
- Confirm that the game is patched for the correct edition.
- Verify files in the launcher.
- Disable every overlay and close nonessential applications.
- Clean-install the GPU driver.
- Check for malware, as recommended by the publisher’s crash guidance, and restore any security software disabled for testing.
If the crash persists, note whether it happens at the same point every launch. A consistent failure after a patch suggests an edition, file, driver, or overlay issue; a failure only after extended play suggests a different stability pattern and should be described that way to support.
Crash while loading one save
First verify files and test another save or a new game. If only one location or save triggers the crash, preserve the affected save and do not overwrite it with repeated experiments. The performance support guidance asks for save files when an issue is tied to a particular location.

Crash in one location or during one effect
Record the map location, quest, weather or combat condition, and graphics settings. Test HairWorks, ray tracing or path tracing, overlays, and the current versus previous driver separately. A short video showing the route to the crash is more useful than a description such as “it crashes randomly.”
Fix “Witcher 3 stuttering after update” and low FPS
Stuttering can mean inconsistent frame times even when the displayed FPS number looks high. Reproduce it in the same area after each change. Start with output resolution, then ray tracing or path tracing, then the upscaling mode and HairWorks. Keep the patch and driver constant while comparing settings.
If stutter appears only after a driver update, perform the clean-install and rollback comparison described above. If it appears only with an overlay, leave that overlay disabled while playing and report the conflict to its developer. If it appears in every configuration, verify that the system meets the exact edition’s requirements and that the game is installed on the required SSD for the enhanced build.
Do not promise a universal FPS gain from any one option. Scene complexity, resolution, GPU model, driver, and patch all affect the result, and the official requirements page explicitly says performance targets can fluctuate.
Keep a useful troubleshooting record
Before contacting support, create a short log. Include:
- Edition and complete game build or hotfix number.
- Launcher and installation location.
- Windows version, CPU, GPU, installed memory, and whether the game is on an SSD.
- GPU driver version and the date you installed or rolled it back.
- Display resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, ray tracing or path tracing state, HairWorks state, upscaling mode, and frame-generation state if available.
- The exact symptom: startup crash, loading crash, location-specific crash, hitching, repeated frame-time spikes, or persistently low FPS.
- The steps already completed and the result of each one.
Change only one variable between tests and keep the original settings written down. This prevents a successful or failed change from being lost in a sequence of simultaneous tweaks.
Escalate to official support with the right files
Use CD PROJEKT RED’s official support form after the publisher-recommended isolation steps. The performance guidance asks for a video when possible and save files when the problem is tied to a particular location.
On Windows, the save folder is:

Explain what changed immediately before the fault began, such as a game hotfix, driver installation, graphics-setting change, or overlay update.
Should you buy an SSD, GPU, or repair tool?
No purchase is a general fix established by the official troubleshooting guidance. An SSD is required for the current enhanced technical features, but that requirement does not demonstrate that an SSD upgrade will cure a particular crash or stutter. A graphics-card upgrade is justified only after the exact edition, resolution, and requirements show that the current GPU is below the supported target. Physical repair or maintenance tools are unrelated to the software isolation steps unless you have a separate, confirmed hardware fault.

For a 2022 Next-Gen Update installation, use advice that matches that build; for Remastered, patch to the current platform release first. The most reliable PC sequence is file verification, overlay and background-app isolation, a clean GPU-driver installation, and a rollback test when the timing points to a driver update. Then compare resolution, ray tracing or path tracing, upscaling, HairWorks, and other demanding settings one at a time. If the problem survives those checks, send official support a reproducible description, video, and the relevant save rather than buying hardware on speculation.
