To find the Padlock key in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt quest “In Wolf’s Clothing,” open the rightmost sluice gate nearest Morkvarg’s cave, dive beneath it, and follow the flooded passage into the cave below his lair. Search the bones there, then use the key on the locked garden doors and the chapter house (the house near the sacred tree).
Find the underwater cave with the Padlock key
- Reach the sluice mechanism in Freya’s Garden. Its controls let you select among three gates.
- Open the rightmost gate nearest Morkvarg’s cave. Some guides describe it as the northern gate; use its position relative to the cave as your landmark, since directional wording can vary.
- Dive beneath the open gate and follow the flooded passage into the cave below Morkvarg’s lair.
- Search the bones or skeleton remains in the cave to collect the Padlock key.
The three gates lead to different places. The rightmost/northern route is the one described for reaching the key cave; opening a different gate will not take you there. You may be able to reach parts of the garden without using the sluice mechanism, but that shortcut does not change where the key is found. Use the key on the garden house
Swim back and use the Padlock key on the locked garden doors or the chapter-house door. The building may also be described as the house near the sacred tree. The key is associated with multiple garden doors, so it is not simply an ordinary key for one room. (The Witcher Wiki walkthrough; Official Witcher Wiki item reference)
Optional quest clue inside the chapter house
Spoiler for a later investigation step: Search both rooms. The left room contains Morkvarg’s journal in a chest; reading it provides a clue relevant to the later conversation with Einar. The quest objectives include searching the chapter house and reading the journal. (The Witcher Wiki walkthrough; quest objective list)
