These instructions target the PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered released in September 2026. Menu labels, graphics features, frame-rate modes and requirements differ between PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and can change between game builds. The reliable way to gain performance is to measure a repeatable scene, change one setting at a time, and keep the image-quality trade-off you can actually see.

Start by identifying your build, platform and target

Before changing a slider, confirm which executable you are running and what you are trying to achieve. CD PROJEKT RED’s current support material covers the 2026 Remastered PC release, while the company’s December 12, 2022 version 4.0 notes describe an older feature set. The older notes are useful historical documentation, not a complete list of the options in Remastered.

  • PC Remastered: use the current in-game menu and current PC requirements. The Remastered release adds enhanced visuals and performance work, including PC path tracing.
  • PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X: the 2022 notes describe a 30-FPS ray-tracing mode with dynamic resolution and a 60-FPS performance mode. Those are version-specific descriptions; check the mode names and behavior on your installed build.
  • Xbox Series S: the 2022 notes say it does not offer the ray-tracing features listed for the other consoles.
  • Older PC versions: the support page indicates that reverting to an earlier version may be possible depending on platform. Do not assume an option shown in old 4.0 documentation exists, or behaves the same way, in Remastered.

Set a target before tuning: for example, a stable 60 FPS, a locked 30 FPS, or the highest practical refresh rate for your monitor. A stable lower target usually feels better than a fluctuating higher number.

Make a repeatable baseline

Record your current output resolution, preset, ray-tracing state, upscaling mode and frame-generation state. Then test in the same demanding location each time: a busy settlement, a dense outdoor area, or a scene that consistently produces your lowest frame rate. Walk the same route for several minutes and note average FPS plus the lowest or “1% low” reading if your overlay provides it. No single scene represents every quest, weather effect or combat encounter, so keep a second check area for confirmation.

Close downloads and overlays that you do not need, let shader compilation finish, and avoid comparing a freshly loaded area with one that has already streamed its assets. Change only one variable between runs. If you change resolution, ray tracing and foliage together, you will not know which change helped or which one damaged image quality.

Use resolution and upscaling first when the GPU is the limit

Resolution is often the clearest performance lever. CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page explicitly warns that higher resolution significantly affects FPS and that results vary with scene, system configuration, graphics settings and output resolution. If your GPU is near full utilization and lowering resolution improves frame rate, you are GPU-limited.

  1. Run your baseline at your monitor’s native resolution.
  2. Try the next lower output resolution, or select an in-game upscaling mode if your build exposes one.
  3. Compare fine details such as foliage, hair, distant signs and thin wires, not just the FPS counter.
  4. Keep the option only if the image remains acceptable during movement and camera pans.

Upscaling modes reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render. The available choice depends on the game build and hardware. NVIDIA’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XeSS are not interchangeable promises: each requires the relevant implementation and may have different quality, sharpening and artifact behavior. The December 2022 version 4.0 notes listed FSR 2.1 and DLSS 3 support, with DLSS 3 requiring compatible hardware; those notes should not be treated as a guarantee of the exact Remastered menu.

The current requirements page says its ray-tracing minimum and recommended estimates used DLSS, FSR or XeSS set to Auto. Other configurations were measured at native resolution with upscaling off, while path-tracing measurement also enabled upscaling and frame generation. Compare your results using the same assumptions; native-resolution raster performance is not directly comparable with a ray-tracing test using automatic upscaling.

Test ray tracing and path tracing separately

Ray tracing and path tracing add lighting, reflections or shadows that can make scenes look richer, but they can consume substantial GPU time. The Remastered release identifies path tracing as a PC feature. Neither the current requirements page nor the available historical notes establishes one universal FPS penalty for every GPU and scene.

  1. With your baseline resolution and upscaling choice fixed, disable ray tracing and path tracing, if those switches are present.
  2. Repeat the same demanding route and record the result.
  3. Enable ray tracing without changing anything else. Test again.
  4. If path tracing is offered as a separate option, test it last. It is a heavier lighting mode and may also change the game’s recommended upscaling or frame-generation behavior.
  5. Choose the mode that meets your target in the worst scene you regularly play, not only in a quiet interior.

Disabling these features is not a “wrong” configuration. A stable rasterized image at your target frame rate is often preferable to a visually enhanced mode that repeatedly drops frames or introduces latency. If you use frame generation, judge both smoothness and control response: generated frames can raise the displayed counter without reducing the time needed to render each real input frame.

Trim expensive scene-detail settings in a controlled order

When resolution and advanced lighting are already where you want them, reduce individual quality categories. Names and groupings differ in Remastered, so use the closest current label rather than searching for an exact old-menu phrase. The December 2022 PC Ultra+ notes documented categories including background characters, shadows, grass density, textures, vegetation view distance, terrain, water and level of detail.

Vegetation, grass and foliage distance

Lower grass density and vegetation view distance first if outdoor scenes are the problem. These settings affect how many plants are drawn and how far detailed vegetation remains visible. Check a forest, field and swamp after each change; a setting that helps one area may be less important in a city.

Level of detail, terrain and background characters

Reducing level-of-detail distance or background-character density can ease CPU and GPU work in settlements and wide vistas. Watch for abrupt object transitions or noticeably emptier streets. If the GPU is not heavily loaded but frame time remains high, these options may help more than texture quality.

Shadows

Shadow quality and distance can be costly, especially with advanced lighting disabled but dense outdoor scenes still struggling. Lower one shadow option at a time and inspect Geralt’s shadow, building edges and foliage. Excessively low settings can produce unstable-looking shadow transitions.

Water and terrain

Water quality matters most near rivers, coastlines and rain. Terrain detail affects broad landscapes and uneven ground. Test in the locations where you notice stutter rather than assuming the same setting dominates everywhere.

Textures

Texture quality primarily affects video-memory use and image detail. Lower it only after checking whether your system is running out of VRAM or stuttering during asset streaming. If frame rate is steady and memory is sufficient, reducing textures may provide little benefit while making surfaces visibly blurrier.

Use a practical tuning sequence

Follow this order so every change has a clear purpose:

  1. Confirm prerequisites: verify the Remastered build, platform, current graphics driver, operating-system status, storage device and target frame rate. The current support page says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported or tested going forward, although the game may continue to run, and says an SSD is required for its latest technical enhancements.
  2. Capture the baseline: write down resolution, preset, ray/path tracing, upscaling and frame generation, then test the same route.
  3. Check for a GPU limit: observe GPU utilization and frame time. If lowering resolution helps substantially, test upscaling or a lower output resolution.
  4. Test advanced lighting: compare ray tracing and path tracing off, on, and separately where possible.
  5. Trim scene detail: adjust vegetation, grass, shadows, draw distance, level of detail, terrain, water and background-character settings one at a time.
  6. Recheck image quality: inspect movement, foliage, hair, distant geometry and interiors, not just a still screenshot.
  7. Save a stable profile: keep the highest settings that hold your target in the most demanding areas you actually play.

This is a troubleshooting sequence, not a publisher-certified ranking of individual toggles. The best order can change if your limitation is the CPU, system memory, VRAM, storage streaming or a software problem.

Diagnose symptoms before lowering everything

What you observe Likely limitation to check First experiment
GPU usage stays near maximum and FPS rises when resolution falls GPU rendering load Use a lower output resolution or supported upscaling; then test ray/path tracing.
GPU usage is moderate but frame rate falls in crowded towns CPU, simulation or draw-call load Test background characters, level of detail and view-distance settings.
Frequent hitching while moving through new areas Asset streaming, VRAM, storage or shader compilation Confirm the game is on an SSD, allow shader work to complete, and check VRAM pressure before lowering every quality setting.
Image looks soft after enabling an upscaler Internal resolution, quality mode or sharpening Switch to a higher upscaling quality mode, adjust sharpening if available, or return to native resolution.
Displayed FPS rises but controls still feel delayed Frame-generation latency or high base frame time Compare with frame generation off at a stable native-rendered frame rate.

These checks identify what to test; they do not prove a fault by themselves. Monitor temperatures, clocks and memory usage, and return to the baseline after each experiment.

Understand console limits

Console players cannot reproduce the PC procedure exactly. Console performance modes are fixed by the platform’s available presets, dynamic-resolution system and current patch. The version 4.0 notes describe 30-FPS ray-tracing and 60-FPS performance modes for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, while Xbox Series S lacked the listed ray-tracing features. If your console offers a performance toggle, select it when responsiveness matters; choose the quality or ray-tracing mode when image treatment matters more and its frame-rate target is acceptable. Do not assume a PC upscaling, path-tracing or frame-generation switch will appear on console.

When a hardware upgrade is justified

Consider new hardware only after checking the current Remastered requirements and completing the software tuning sequence. Official requirements identify hardware tiers and target-performance estimates, but those estimates are based on publisher QA testing and can vary by scene, settings, resolution and system configuration. They do not establish a universally best graphics card or current price-to-performance winner.

A graphics-card upgrade is most defensible when your chosen resolution and target FPS require more GPU work even with ray tracing and path tracing disabled, and when lowering resolution or quality would undermine the way you want to play. If the GPU is not saturated, a faster graphics card may not solve a CPU, memory, driver or streaming bottleneck. Decide based on your target resolution, desired frame rate and whether ray tracing or path tracing is important to you, then match the card to the current requirements rather than to an old 4.0-era recommendation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying a “best settings” preset blindly: no universal preset accounts for every GPU, CPU, resolution, build and target frame rate.
  • Comparing unlike tests: native resolution, automatic upscaling and frame generation produce different workloads.
  • Changing many options at once: you lose the evidence needed to choose an efficient compromise.
  • Using historical labels as current facts: the 2022 notes document an earlier version, not the complete Remastered interface.
  • Judging by average FPS alone: low frame-time spikes and traversal stutter can make a nominally high average feel poor.
  • Assuming all platforms match: PC, PlayStation and Xbox expose different modes and hardware capabilities.

The dependable answer is therefore a measured compromise: establish a baseline, lower the workload that your system actually struggles with, and stop when the game is stable at your chosen target without sacrificing image quality you care about.
