For a first-time player, choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Complete Edition (or the current Remastered release offered for your platform): it includes the base game plus both major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. If you already own the base game, check your platform library and store entitlement before paying again. CD PROJEKT RED says base-game owners receive the expansions at no extra cost, and eligible owners also get the Remastered upgrade free.
What is the difference between The Witcher 3 and the Complete Edition?
The original game is the base adventure: Geralt searches for Ciri in an open world. The Complete Edition combines that base game with the two major story expansions. It is not a different core story; the main distinction is the extra expansion content, alongside updates associated with the edition and the current Remastered release.

| Base game | The main open-world adventure. | Players who already own it, or who specifically want only the main story. |
| Complete Edition | Base game, Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine. The publisher’s 2022-era description also included the then-current next-generation update. | New players who want the main game and both expansions in one package. |
| Remastered | The current release, launched September 29, 2026, with the base game, both expansions, and the publisher-described visual and gameplay revisions. | New buyers on a listed supported platform, or eligible owners claiming the upgrade. |
CD PROJEKT RED estimates that the base game offers “over 100 hours” and the two expansions together offer “another 50 hours.” These are publisher estimates, not guaranteed playtimes; how long a playthrough takes depends on how much of the world and side content you explore. Hearts of Stone
This is one of the two major story expansions included in the Complete Edition. It can be started separately from the main story using the game’s main menu, according to CD PROJEKT RED.

Blood and Wine
This is the other major story expansion. Like Hearts of Stone, it can be started separately from the main menu, so players do not have to finish the main adventure first to access expansion content.
For base-game owners, the publisher says to update to the latest version to install the expansions: “Simply update the game to the latest version to install Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.” Check your platform’s library or store page for the exact update and entitlement flow. What does the 2026 Remastered release change?
CD PROJEKT RED describes the current Remastered release as an update to presentation and play, rather than a replacement story. The publisher lists updated textures and foliage, reworked lighting and rendering with ray tracing, revised combat animations and camera, an overhauled skill tree, cross-platform mod support, transmogrification, meditation, and an expanded photo mode. Feature availability can depend on platform; consult the current official page for platform-specific details. CD PROJEKT RED’s current game page

Should you buy it again if you already own The Witcher 3?
Usually, do not repurchase before checking your account. CD PROJEKT RED says base-game owners receive Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no extra cost. Eligible owners also receive the Remastered upgrade free, but entitlement depends on platform and the copy you own.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You do not own the game | Choose the Complete Edition or Remastered listing available on your platform so you get the base game and both expansions. |
| You own the base game on PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S | Check the platform account and store listing for the free expansions and Remastered upgrade before buying another copy. |
| You own the game on Nintendo Switch 2 | Check your library or store listing for the current edition and entitlements. The publisher lists Switch 2 for Remastered; upgrade and storefront details may differ by account or store. |
| You own the game on PS4 or Xbox One | Check for the free expansion downloads. The current official platform list does not include these consoles for the Remastered upgrade. |
The publisher’s August 25, 2026 announcement specified free upgrades for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and discussed Nintendo Switch 2 availability separately. Its launch announcement says the update and expansions are available to owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Because the announcements and platform storefronts distinguish entitlements, confirm the offer shown for your own account before purchasing. What happens to existing copies, saves, and achievements?
CD PROJEKT RED says standalone expansion listings have been delisted and the base game is replaced by the Complete Edition in storefronts. Existing owners keep expansions they already own; their content is patched into the base game. The publisher also says save files remain compatible and achievements or trophies are unaffected. Storefront presentation and the precise entitlement you see can vary by platform, so verify your library before buying another edition. CD PROJEKT RED’s current game page

Which version should you play?
- New to the game: Get the Complete Edition or current Remastered release offered for your platform. It packages the full base adventure and both major expansions.
- Already own the base game: Check for free expansion access and any eligible Remastered upgrade first; do not assume you need to rebuy the bundle.
- On PS4 or Xbox One: The publisher identifies free expansion downloads for these systems, but not the Remastered upgrade.
- Only interested in the main story: The base game is the central adventure, but the Complete Edition is the more comprehensive starting package if you want the expansions too.
