The Witcher 3 Complete Edition vs. Standard Edition: Which Should You Buy?

Buy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition if you are starting the game now or want the complete story in one purchase. It contains the base campaign, Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and 16 additional pieces of content identified by CD PROJEKT RED. Choose the standard edition only when it is substantially cheaper and you intentionally plan to postpone or skip the expansions.

The short answer

The Complete Edition is the better default for a new player because it bundles the entire Witcher 3 story package rather than requiring a later expansion purchase. The standard edition contains the core Witcher 3 campaign, but its original purchase does not include the two major paid story expansions. You can add those expansions separately, so the standard edition is sensible mainly when its price is much lower or you are unsure whether you want the additional story.

There is an important modern complication: CD PROJEKT RED’s next-generation and remastered distribution changed how ownership can look on current platforms. Eligible PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC owners can upgrade to the next-generation version at no charge, and the publisher says existing saves remain compatible. The practical difference between buying standard and Complete therefore depends on your platform storefront, the exact product listing, and when you bought the game.

What the standard and Complete editions contain

Edition Included content When it makes sense
Standard/base edition The core The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt campaign. The original purchase does not include Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine; those expansions must be acquired separately. When it is substantially cheaper, you want to try the main campaign first, or you deliberately do not want the expansions.
Complete Edition The base game, Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and 16 additional pieces of content identified by CD PROJEKT RED. When starting fresh, when you want the full story immediately, or when the price gap is small enough that buying expansions later would not be attractive.

The two expansions are not minor cosmetic add-ons. They are the substantial paid story additions that distinguish the complete package from the original base-game purchase. If your goal is to play everything in the intended single-player role-playing experience, the Complete Edition avoids a second buying decision later.

CD PROJEKT RED describes the current package this way: “Base Game is replaced by the Complete Edition, with the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine content merged into it.” That wording matters because a current listing may present the game as a remastered or next-generation Complete Edition even when your original ownership began with the base version.

Is The Witcher 3 Complete Edition worth it?

For most new buyers, yes. The value comes from receiving both major expansions at the outset, rather than paying for the base campaign and then deciding whether to purchase each expansion separately. The recommendation is strongest when the Complete Edition is only slightly more expensive than the standard edition. It is weaker when a sale makes the standard edition dramatically cheaper and you are uncertain that you will continue beyond the main campaign.

Buy Complete Edition immediately when

  • You have never played The Witcher 3 and want the full narrative package.
  • You already know you want Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
  • The storefront price difference is small compared with the cost of buying the expansions later.
  • You want one product listing, one entitlement, and fewer questions about which downloadable content is attached to your account.
  • You are buying a current-generation version whose listing explicitly identifies the Complete Edition.

The standard edition is reasonable when

  • The standard game is substantially cheaper than the Complete Edition during a sale.
  • You are testing whether the core campaign suits you before committing to additional story content.
  • You intend to play only the base campaign and have no interest in the expansions.
  • You already own the base game and your platform account provides the relevant upgrade or expansion entitlement.

Do not use the word “upgrade” as a guarantee that every physical or digital copy receives identical content. The publisher’s general eligibility rules are clear, but platform generation, disc, region, and storefront treatment can change what you must download or which product you need to own.

What are Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine?

Hearts of Stone

Hearts of Stone is one of the two major paid story expansions included in the Complete Edition. It is separate from the core campaign in the original standard purchase, so a standard-edition owner must obtain it through a separate expansion entitlement unless their platform treatment supplies it through a newer Complete Edition package.

Blood and Wine

Blood and Wine is the second major paid story expansion in the Complete Edition. It is also absent from the original base-game purchase. If “full story” is your buying criterion, verify that this expansion is named in the listing rather than assuming that a product described only as “The Witcher 3” includes it.

Both expansion names should appear explicitly in a complete product description. A listing that mentions only a next-generation patch, visual improvements, or the base game does not by itself prove that you are buying the Complete Edition entitlement.

How the next-generation version changes the comparison

CD PROJEKT RED announced the next-generation Complete Edition update for release on December 14, 2022. On current supported platforms, the publisher’s remastered presentation incorporates the expansion content into the Complete Edition package. The supported current-generation platforms listed in the publisher’s support information include PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

For eligible owners of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions, CD PROJEKT RED states that the next-generation version is a free upgrade. Its support FAQ also says: “Yes. Your save files remain compatible and Cross Progression will remain functional the same as before.” That means an existing base-game owner should check their account and platform entitlement before buying a second copy.

The publisher’s more recent remastered announcement says the two expansions are included even for players who previously owned only the base version. In practical terms, the distinction between “standard” and “Complete” is therefore not identical for every owner. A person who bought the base game earlier may receive a newer Complete Edition presentation or expansion access through the platform’s entitlement rules, while a new buyer may see separate standard and Complete products in the store.

Check the exact listing on your hardware before paying. Look for the edition name, included expansions, generation designation, and whether the product is an upgrade, a full game, or a bundle. If the store offers a free next-generation download, confirm which item you must claim; do not assume that installing a patch automatically grants every separate entitlement on every storefront.

Platform and ownership rules you should verify

Situation What the publisher’s information establishes What you should verify before buying
Existing PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One owner Eligible owners can upgrade to the next-generation version for free. Which account owns the game, whether your edition is eligible, and which store item delivers the upgrade.
Existing save files Save files remain compatible, and Cross Progression remains functional. That your platform account and installed version use the same supported progression system.
New PC buyer PC is listed among the current supported platforms. Whether the listing is standard or Complete and whether both expansions are included in the product entitlement.
New PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S buyer These consoles are listed among current-generation supported platforms. Whether you are purchasing a current-generation product or relying on an older-generation disc or upgrade path.
Nintendo Switch 2 buyer Nintendo Switch 2 is listed in the publisher’s current-generation support information. That the cartridge or digital listing is specifically for your console generation and region.
Physical-copy buyer Platform and disc rules can differ. Console generation, region, edition name, included download codes, and whether the disc is required to launch the upgraded version.

Physical and digital ownership are not interchangeable assumptions. A disc may identify an older console generation even when a digital store offers a current-generation upgrade. A cartridge or disc can also be region-specific. Before opening a physical product, read the platform, region, and edition information on the case and retailer listing.

How to decide when prices change

There is no stable universal price comparison. Prices vary by storefront, platform, region, currency, and sale period, so a single dollar figure would quickly become misleading. Use the price gap at the moment you are buying instead.

  1. Record the current price of the standard edition on your exact platform.
  2. Record the current price of the Complete Edition on that same platform and in the same region.
  3. Check the separate prices of Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, if the storefront sells them individually or as an expansion bundle.
  4. Compare the total cost of standard plus the expansions with the Complete Edition, including any platform-specific bundle restrictions.
  5. Choose Complete when its price is close to, or lower than, the equivalent standard-plus-expansions total. Choose standard when the saving is substantial and you are comfortable postponing the expansions.

Do this comparison on one storefront at a time. A PC sale price cannot be used to judge a console purchase, and a physical retailer’s price may not include the same upgrade or downloadable-content entitlement as a digital listing.

Buying checklist for each platform

PC

  • Confirm whether the store page says “Complete Edition” rather than merely “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”
  • Verify that both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine appear in the included-content list.
  • If you already own the base game, check your library for the next-generation upgrade before purchasing again.
  • Confirm that your existing save location and account are the ones attached to the version you are installing.

PlayStation

  • Identify whether you own the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 product.
  • If you own an eligible PlayStation 4 copy, check the store for the free next-generation upgrade path.
  • For a disc copy, verify that your console accepts that disc and that the region matches your account.
  • Read the product description for the two expansion names instead of relying on cover art alone.

Xbox

  • Check whether the listing is for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or a cross-generation entitlement.
  • Existing eligible Xbox One owners should check their library for the free next-generation version.
  • For a physical disc, confirm the console generation and region before purchase.
  • Check that the Complete Edition, not only the base campaign, is attached to the listing.

Nintendo Switch 2

  • Confirm that the product is explicitly identified for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Check whether the listing is a Complete Edition package and whether the cartridge or digital license supplies all included content.
  • Verify region compatibility for physical media and the account used for digital purchases.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: assuming every “next-generation” listing includes the expansions

The modern presentation is closely associated with the Complete Edition, but storefront labels can still differ. Open the included-content section and look for both expansion names.

Mistake: buying the base game twice

If you already own the game on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, check eligibility for the free next-generation upgrade first. The publisher says existing saves remain compatible, so a second purchase may be unnecessary.

Mistake: treating the physical disc as a universal license

Disc and platform rules differ. A PlayStation 4 disc, Xbox One disc, or older physical release may not behave like a current-generation digital entitlement. Confirm the generation, region, and upgrade instructions for the exact product.

Mistake: comparing prices across different products

A standard digital edition, a Complete Edition bundle, and a physical copy with separate downloadable content are not equivalent price objects. Compare like-for-like listings on the same platform.

Mistake: expecting a free upgrade to answer every DLC question

The publisher’s announcements describe expansion inclusion for the remastered Complete Edition and free next-generation upgrades for eligible owners, but the way a store exposes those entitlements can vary. Check your account’s owned items and the product’s included-content list.

Which edition should different buyers choose?

First-time player who wants the complete experience

Choose the Complete Edition. It is the simplest route to the base campaign and both major expansions without a later entitlement check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First-time player on a tight budget

Choose the standard edition only if the saving is substantial and you are willing to decide about the expansions later. Recheck the Complete Edition during a sale before buying separate DLC.

Returning player who owns the base game

Do not buy immediately. First check whether your PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One ownership qualifies for the free next-generation version and whether your account now exposes the Complete Edition content. Your saves should remain compatible according to CD PROJEKT RED’s support statement.

Physical collector or gift buyer

Choose the physical Complete Edition only after confirming the console generation, region, and whether the package includes all required content. The name on the box is not enough if the retailer has mixed generations or editions.

Player who wants only the core campaign

The standard edition is the appropriate choice if you have no intention of playing either expansion and the price is meaningfully lower. You are giving up the two major paid story additions, but you are not paying for content you do not plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final buying decision

For a new purchase, select The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition unless the standard edition is substantially cheaper or you specifically want to postpone the expansions. It includes the base game, Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and 16 additional pieces of content identified by CD PROJEKT RED.

For an existing PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One owner, check your free next-generation upgrade and account entitlements before spending money again. The publisher says saves remain compatible, and its newer remastered information says the expansions are included for players who previously owned only the base version. Because physical media, regions, generations, and storefront listings can differ, verify the exact product page for your hardware before checkout.
