What you like is the version of the game assembled in your head from trailers, developer updates, a story you already know, and other fans’ talk. That attachment is real. It is also a feeling about an imagined game, not a verdict on the one that ships.
What you’re actually attached to
Before launch, you have no controller in your hands. You have fragments: a trailer’s mood, a character’s face, a line from an interview, a release date. Your mind fills the gaps with a plausible whole, and you can respond to that whole with real affection, impatience or dread. Waiting then feels good because you are enjoying the imagined game with none of the friction a real one adds, such as clumsy controls, a dull stretch or a bug.

This is ordinary anticipation, the same kind people feel before a trip or a film. It isn’t a disorder and needs no fixing.
Where the feeling comes from
Trailers and developer communication
A 2026 mixed-methods study of God of War fan communities followed them through 12 months of online observation, then ran an experiment. It found that trailers, developer updates, speculation and peer comments all feed pre-release anticipation. Early expectations are shaped by advertising, which is the first layer of the imagined game.

The community around the game
The same study describes expectations as socially co-constructed and updated over time. Fan discussion can amplify excitement or temper it. Part of why you feel attached is that you aren’t imagining alone: other people’s theories and reactions become part of your picture of the game.
Story familiarity
A study titled “Effects of pre-game stories on feelings of presence and evaluation of computer games” reports that seeing a pre-game story can make characters, context and environment more familiar. According to its abstract, viewers who watched a pre-game story video evaluated the game more positively and felt stronger presence than those who didn’t. I could only confirm this from the abstract, so treat it as a finding from that study’s setup, not a rule for every game or player. It does suggest why a sequel, an adaptation or a well-known universe can feel lovable on day one: you already know the people and the place.

Watching others play
Research on Twitch viewing describes watching gameplay as one way viewers evaluate games before playing, and notes that viewers can form parasocial relationships with streamers. Watching tells you what a game looks like and how others respond to it. It doesn’t show that you will enjoy playing it, and a streamer’s charm is not the game’s.

Two ways people handle the wait
The God of War study documents two preferences. Some players seek details to reduce uncertainty before buying. Others avoid spoilers to preserve discovery. Neither is a personality type, and the same person can switch depending on the game. The two preferences answer different needs:

One public discussion post asked, in the poster’s words, why people “love to know everything about a game before they even play it.” That is one person’s phrasing, not a measure of how common the habit is. It does show that the impulse puzzles some people, and that the opposite instinct is just as natural.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What anticipation can and can’t tell you
- It tells you what appeals to you: the setting, the tone, the characters, the promise.
- It doesn’t tell you whether the mechanics will suit you. Whether combat, pacing, difficulty or controls feel good only shows up in play.
- It doesn’t guarantee enjoyment. Nothing in the studies above shows that anticipation reliably makes play more enjoyable. A positive pre-game evaluation is a different thing from a good hour with the controller.
Expectations are also revised after release. The God of War study describes them as adjusted once the game is experienced, and play can confirm or contradict the game you imagined. A letdown often means the real game differed from the imagined one, not that you were foolish to be excited.

Using the feeling well
- Name what you like. Is it the world, the characters, the genre or the studio’s reputation? Those are the parts of the imagined game you can trust to carry over, at least in part.
- Find the part you can’t know yet. Usually that’s how it plays. Look for gameplay footage or hands-on impressions that address it, remembering that watching isn’t playing.
- Decide how much to learn. If surprise matters to you, stop at the trailers and mute community threads. If uncertainty bothers you more, read and watch more before buying.
- Hold the imagined version loosely. Enjoy the wait, but let the real game replace it when it arrives.
The evidence behind this
The strongest support comes from a single case study of one game’s fan community, so its mechanism is a good explanation, not a proven universal. The pre-game story and Twitch findings are reported from abstracts. No verified statistic exists on how often people like a game before playing it.
