The Viral iPhone Bride Photo Was Likely a Panorama Stitch—not a ChatGPT Glitch

The strange wedding-dress-shop photo of Tessa Coates, whose reflections show poses that do not match her body, can be recreated with an iPhone’s Panorama mode. The leading explanation is that a panorama stitch captured her and her reflections at different moments—not that ChatGPT generated the image or that the phone suffered a hardware fault. That is a plausible explanation, not a forensic confirmation of how the original was captured.

What happened in the viral bride photo?

In December 2023, a photo of bride-to-be Tessa Coates trying on a wedding dress drew attention because the mirror reflections show her in positions that do not line up with her body. Her arms appear to be in different poses across the image. The result looked to some viewers like an AI composite, a “glitch in the Matrix,” or a badly stitched photograph. BGR’s report recounts the image and the competing explanations.

The strongest public explanation is an accidental or unusually stopped panorama capture. BGR reports that iPhonedo demonstrated a similar effect. But the original image’s full capture process and metadata are not independently established in the cited account. Coates reportedly said it was not photoshopped, a panorama, or a Live Photo; that statement and a successful recreation do not settle exactly how the original was made.

How can Panorama mode show different poses at once?

A normal photo aims to represent a scene at roughly one moment. Panorama mode instead builds a wide image from successive portions of a scene as the camera scans it. Apple’s Pano instructions describe starting the capture and panning in the direction of an onscreen arrow.

If the phone stays nearly still while a person moves during that sequence, the portions used in the finished image can contain different poses. The stitching software tries to join those portions into one picture, so a moving arm or body may appear split, duplicated, or displaced.

Mirrors make the effect more convincing: they show the same person from different spatial relationships within a compact scene. The reflections supply multiple visible versions of the subject, while the capture timing can preserve different moments in those versions. Without mirrors, a moving subject may still be stretched, split, or duplicated, but the result is less likely to resemble several separate people.

How to try the effect on an iPhone

You need an iPhone whose Camera app offers Pano mode, a subject who can move gradually, mirrors that show the subject and reflections, and steady, even lighting. Keep the phone’s path clear and choose a safe place to stand.

  1. Position the subject near a large mirror or several mirrors. Frame the subject and reflections within the area the camera can scan.
  2. Open the Camera app and swipe through the available camera modes until Pano appears.
  3. Press the shutter to begin capturing.
  4. Rather than making a normal, broad panorama sweep, hold the phone almost stationary or move it only a little. Ask the subject to shift pose slowly while capture is active.
  5. Press the shutter again to stop, then review the image. Try different timing, framing, or subject movement if the result is not usable.

Apple’s documented technique is to pan slowly while following the onscreen guide, then press the shutter again to finish. Holding still or stopping unusually early is an experiment with that workflow, not Apple’s standard panorama technique.

How to improve your chances

  • Keep the phone steady. A stable two-handed grip or tripod can make the seams more predictable.
  • Move the subject, not the camera. Different moments need to fall into the successive portions captured by the phone.
  • Start with slow, simple movements. Fast or complicated motion is more likely to blur or tear the subject.
  • Try a short scan. A full-width panorama is not necessary and may make the composition awkwardly wide.
  • Change the starting position and timing. These affect which pose appears in each part of the final image.
  • Use clean-edged mirrors and good, even light. Curved mirrors, dark rooms, flickering lights, and clutter can make the result harder to read.
  • Make several attempts and inspect the full-resolution image. Social-media compression can hide or exaggerate stitching artifacts.

Troubleshoot the result

What you see What to try
An ordinary wide panorama Keep the phone more stationary and stop sooner.
A blurred subject Ask the subject to move more slowly and improve the lighting.
A badly stretched body Reduce the movement and adjust the subject’s position in the frame.
Only one reflection changes Adjust the mirror angles or the subject’s position so more reflections fall within the scan.
Obvious, distracting seams Try clearer vertical lines in the scene and hold the phone steadier.
No unusual effect Check that Pano mode is active and have the subject change pose while capture is running.

These are practical adjustments to test, not guaranteed fixes: panorama stitching depends on the scene, timing, movement, and the phone’s processing.

Why this is not proof of a ChatGPT image

Generative AI creates or alters image content through a model. Computational photography processes camera data to produce a photograph; panorama stitching is one example, combining image information captured over time. Those are different processes, even though both involve software.

A mismatched reflection alone does not prove that an image was AI-generated. The panorama explanation shows how a camera capture can produce a similar visual anomaly without ChatGPT or editing software. It does not authenticate the original photo or establish its exact capture sequence. BGR also reports that Coates described the image as not being a Live Photo; the panorama theory concerns stitched image data, not a Live Photo effect.

Compatibility and safety

Any iPhone with the Camera app’s Pano mode is a reasonable candidate, but controls and available modes vary by model and iOS version. Apple’s camera basics guide notes that available camera modes depend on the iPhone model, so the precise interface may differ.
