The Viral Hurricane Melissa Bird Image Is AI-Generated—and Its Scale Gives It Away

The widely shared image of birds circling above Hurricane Melissa’s eye is not an authentic aerial photograph. It was reported as AI-generated or AI-assisted imagery and reposted as if it documented the storm. Meteorologists identified a simple giveaway: the birds’ apparent size and altitude do not fit the real dimensions or atmosphere of Melissa’s eye.

What the image claimed to show

The picture presents a dramatic, overhead-looking view of Hurricane Melissa: a circular eye surrounded by a towering eyewall, with birds apparently trapped or circling above the calm center. Some early posts identified similar material as AI-generated or hypothetical, but later copies circulated without that context. Yale Climate Connections reported that an early TikTok example carried an AI label before related versions spread more broadly.

That distinction matters. A stylized simulation is not evidence of an event; a caption that presents the same image as a photograph changes its meaning. Reporting from Futurism and Yale Climate Connections described the circulating bird image as fabricated or AI-assisted rather than documentary imagery.

The scale problem meteorologists spotted

Melissa’s real eye was about 10 nautical miles wide

NOAA’s National Hurricane Center described a well-defined eye roughly 10 nautical miles across on October 27–28, 2025. That is about 11.5 statute miles (18.5 kilometers), a conversion of the NHC measurement, not a measurement of the social-media image. The official discussions are available in Discussion 27 and Discussion 28.

The birds are far too large in the composition

In the viral composition, the birds occupy a substantial fraction of the eye and eyewall. Retired National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Grumm explained to Yale Climate Connections that, if the eye were really about 10 nautical miles wide, birds shown at that relative scale would be larger than football fields. That is a scale comparison, not a precise geometric measurement of each bird.

The apparent altitude creates a second problem

Retired Penn State meteorology lecturer Lee Grenci pointed to the birds’ apparent position above the eyewall. In the depicted configuration, they would have to be at altitudes comparable to or higher than Mount Everest, where air is exceptionally cold and thin. Ordinary birds could not fly there as shown. The issue is not that birds can never enter a hurricane environment; it is that this particular viewpoint, altitude and scale cannot describe normal birds above Melissa’s entire eye.

Could real birds have been in Hurricane Melissa?

Yes. Yale Climate Connections reported that Hurricane Hunters observed birds in or near the eye or eyewall during at least one Melissa reconnaissance flight. That fact does not authenticate the viral picture. An aircraft can encounter birds while flying inside or through a storm, while the image circulating online depicts a fictional, satellite-like view from directly above the whole eye.

These are different observations:

  • Real reconnaissance: birds seen from an aircraft operating inside the storm.
  • The viral composition: birds apparently hovering above the entire eye at an impossible visual scale and altitude.

What authentic Hurricane Hunter missions looked like

NOAA documented extensive Melissa operations by NOAA and Air Force Hurricane Hunters. Crews flew more than 100 hours, released more than 250 dropsondes and used 12 uncrewed aircraft systems to collect atmospheric data. NOAA also published imagery of a WP-3D Orion flying through the eye of Category 5 Melissa on October 28. See the agency’s account at NOAA’s Hurricane Hunter operations report.

Real reconnaissance photographs generally show an aircraft interior, instruments, the cloud wall or a view from within the storm. They offer limited, physically specific vantage points—not a perfectly composed, satellite-like picture looking straight down on the entire eye. Aircraft can photograph storms from other angles, but the viral image’s combination of perspective and scale does not match the documented dimensions or mission context.

Melissa was real; that did not make every image real

Hurricane Melissa was an exceptionally powerful storm, and NOAA’s aircraft collected genuine observations while it was active. Its intensity and destruction supplied a compelling backdrop for invented visuals, but dramatic reality does not validate unrelated social-media posts.

Futurism reported that the bird image appeared to circulate on X around 1 a.m. Eastern Time on October 28, 2025, before spreading across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Threads and drawing tens of thousands of reactions. The repeated use of identical material raised questions about automated or coordinated amplification. That reporting does not prove that a bot farm created or distributed the image.

Other misleading Melissa imagery

The bird image was part of a wider misinformation environment. Reports described AI-generated or AI-assisted storm views, recycled footage from unrelated disasters and images relabeled as damage from Melissa. One widely circulated picture was said to show Jamaica’s Black River Hospital. The hospital was genuinely damaged, but the picture itself was not reliable evidence of that building.

As summarized by Yale Climate Connections from Full Fact’s investigation, Google identified a SynthID watermark in the hospital image. SynthID is an invisible watermark used by certain Google AI tools and designed to remain detectable after some changes in quality or size. A detected watermark can support the conclusion that Google AI tools were involved in creating or editing a file; it cannot by itself identify the person who made it, establish when it was made or show that every element was synthetic.

What SynthID can—and cannot—prove

  • Positive detection: evidence of involvement by a Google tool that uses SynthID.
  • No detection: not proof that an image is authentic. Another generator may have been used, or a screenshot, crop, re-encoding or platform process may have affected the signal.
  • Provenance limit: a watermark does not provide a complete chain of custody or prove the caption attached to the file.

How to verify a hurricane image

  1. Find the earliest available post. Check whether the original uploader called it AI-generated, simulated or fictional. Later captions may have removed that context.
  2. Test the claimed viewpoint. Ask whether a known satellite, aircraft, drone or weather mission could have produced the angle. Compare it with official reconnaissance records.
  3. Check scale. Compare people, birds, buildings, aircraft, clouds and the storm eye against official measurements. AI scenes can look coherent while violating physical proportions.
  4. Check atmospheric conditions. Apparent extreme-altitude subjects should prompt questions about temperature, air density and lift.
  5. Reverse-search the image. Look for earlier versions, alternate captions and posts that identify a simulation. Reverse search establishes prior use, not necessarily the generation method.
  6. Check provenance signals. Use an available indicator such as SynthID when relevant, but treat it as supporting evidence rather than a complete verdict.
  7. Compare with official imagery. NOAA’s 2025 hurricane imagery gallery contains satellite images and animations of Melissa from October 22–31. Give those observations priority over unsourced reposts.

Why fabricated disaster images matter

False imagery can distort perceptions of a storm’s severity, compete with verified emergency information and confuse people about which roads, hospitals and communities are functioning. It can also generate engagement or advertising revenue for accounts exploiting a disaster, while making it harder for responders and journalists to establish what happened.

The available reporting supports concern about those risks. It does not establish that this particular bird image caused a documented evacuation, rescue failure or medical error.
