WordPress local SEO starts with accurate business information on your verified Google Business Profile and a crawlable website that clearly describes what you do and where you serve customers. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence; plugins can help manage a site, but they cannot erase distance or guarantee better rankings.

What local SEO on WordPress involves

Local SEO helps people find a business when they search for a product or service tied to a place. For a WordPress site, the work has two parts: maintaining accurate information on Google and making the website useful and accessible to both people and search engines. The details differ for a business customers visit at one address, a service-area business, and an organization with several locations.

Google describes three main factors in local results: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how closely a business profile matches a search. Distance is how near the business is to the searcher. Prominence reflects how well-known the business is; Google says information such as links and reviews can contribute, and that more reviews and positive ratings may help. Google also says businesses cannot request or pay for a better local ranking.

Set up and maintain your Google Business Profile

Use a profile that an authorized representative of the business owns or manages. Verify it, then check that it accurately describes the real business. Google says complete and accurate information makes a profile more likely to appear for relevant local searches.

  • Business name and category: Use the real business name and choose the category that best describes the main business.
  • Address: Add an address when customers can visit the business there. Do not use an address that does not represent an eligible, real business location.
  • Hours and contact details: Keep regular and special hours, phone number, website and other profile details current.
  • Attributes: Add useful attributes that accurately apply to the business.
  • Reviews: Monitor and respond to customer reviews.
  • Photos and videos: Add current visuals that help customers recognize the business and understand what it offers.

Google’s guidance on improving local ranking also mentions in-store product listings, but that feature is limited to retail businesses in eligible countries or regions; it is not a general requirement for every local business.

Make the WordPress site useful and crawlable

A complete Business Profile does not replace a good website. WordPress has search-friendly features, but themes and customizations can undermine them. The WordPress documentation recommends attention to crawlability, code quality, useful content and understandable permalinks. See the WordPress SEO documentation, last updated May 12, 2026.

Make the information a prospective customer needs easy to find on the site:

  • State what the business does and which services it offers in plain language.
  • Show the business’s real contact details and hours, consistent with its day-to-day operation and Business Profile.
  • Explain where customers can visit, or which areas the business serves, as appropriate to the business model.
  • For multiple branches, provide useful information for each real location rather than relying on one generic page to represent them all.
  • Use clear page addresses and check that important pages are available to search engines rather than blocked or hidden behind a login.

The exact page structure depends on whether the business serves customers at a public location or travels to service locations. Prioritize accurate, helpful information over creating pages that merely repeat a city or service name.

Use LocalBusiness structured data accurately

LocalBusiness structured data is machine-readable information that can describe facts such as a business’s hours, departments and address. It helps Google interpret a page; it is not a promise of a higher local-pack ranking. Google’s LocalBusiness structured data guidance explains eligibility and implementation, not a guaranteed ranking lift.

Markup should match both the real business and information visible on the page. Google’s examples include business type, name, address, telephone and opening hours. Never add a false address, location or review information.

  1. Choose the appropriate business type and include the required properties for the feature or eligibility you are targeting.
  2. Follow Google’s structured-data policies and keep every marked-up fact accurate and visible to users.
  3. Validate the markup with Google’s Rich Results Test.
  4. After deployment, use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to test how Google sees the page.
  5. Ensure Google can crawl the page: it must not be blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex or require a login.

After a page is published, Google says discovery and crawling may take several days. Structured data does not guarantee that Google will display a rich result.

Decide whether a WordPress local SEO plugin is worthwhile

A single-location business can complete Google’s profile recommendations and maintain a useful WordPress site without buying a dedicated local SEO plugin. A plugin becomes more relevant when repeated location-management work is a real burden—for example, maintaining branch pages, hours and maps, or adding a store finder.

Yoast describes its Local SEO functionality as supporting single- and multiple-location businesses, with features such as location information and store-finder functionality. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not the result of a comparative product test. Its page accessed for this guide listed Local SEO in Yoast SEO Premium, Yoast SEO AI+ and Yoast WooCommerce SEO; packaging can change, so check the current offering before choosing.

Before installing another plugin, check what your existing SEO setup already outputs. Yoast’s developer documentation shows how its schema graph can connect organization, location, address and page information. A second plugin may create duplicate or conflicting business markup if the existing one already handles it.

What to compare Why it matters
Number of locations and location pages Determine whether the tool can manage the number of real branches you have and whether it creates distinct, useful pages for them.
Addresses and opening hours Check whether it makes the details you need easier to keep accurate.
Store finder or location search Consider this only if customers need to search among multiple locations.
Structured data Confirm which markup it adds and whether another plugin already produces the same business information.
Compatibility Check how it works with the site’s current theme and SEO plugins.
Current package and recurring cost Compare the live bundle contents and renewal cost; vendor packaging and prices can change.

When paid local SEO tools make sense

A paid tool is optional, not a substitute for accurate profile and website information. Consider one when you have a specific operational need, such as monitoring local rankings across several locations or managing listings at scale. A small business with one location may not need a paid suite for the core tasks in this guide.

Semrush describes its Local SEO suite as including map-rank tracking and listings management. Semrush states that its listings feature covers more than 70 US directories and more than 40 international directories. Those are vendor-stated coverage figures, not an independent audit; check current coverage for the countries and directories relevant to your business, along with the recurring cost. A tool’s feature list does not establish that it will improve rankings or business outcomes.

Keep local business information current

Review the profile, site and markup when the business changes, and check them regularly so outdated details do not linger.

  • Confirm the Business Profile’s address or service information, category, hours, contact details and relevant attributes.
  • Update the WordPress site when services, contact information, location details or hours change.
  • Refresh photos and videos when they no longer represent the business.
  • Keep up with customer reviews and respond where appropriate.
  • After changing business details or pages, verify that visible information and structured data still agree, then check the deployed page with URL Inspection.
