Mixing baking soda and vinegar in an open container creates a harmless-looking fizz as an acid–base reaction produces carbon dioxide. That spectacle does not mean you have made a stronger cleaner. The reaction consumes much of the vinegar’s acidity and the baking soda’s alkalinity, leaving mainly a sodium-acetate solution, water and dissolved gas. For most cleaning jobs, use the ingredients separately; never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach.
Why baking soda and vinegar fizz
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, while vinegar contains acetic acid. When they meet, the atoms rearrange in the reaction described by the American Chemical Society:

acetic acid + sodium bicarbonate → sodium acetate + water + carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide gas forms bubbles, causing the rapid foaming. The reaction follows conservation of mass: the atoms do not disappear; they end up in the products. Bubbling stops when one reactant has been used up, a principle demonstrated in an American Chemical Society Journal of Chemical Education activity that uses the reaction to inflate balloons.

The fizz is therefore evidence of a chemical reaction, not a cleaning-performance test. Once the acid and base have reacted, the mixture no longer retains vinegar’s original acidity or baking soda’s original alkalinity. A premixed bottle is consequently a poor all-purpose cleaner.
When mixing them is reasonable
A small science demonstration
For a classroom or home demonstration, combine a small quantity in a large, open container. Wear eye protection, keep children supervised and expect splashes. Never cap the container: carbon dioxide generation can raise pressure and force liquid or a stopper out.

Limited drain maintenance
University of Florida IFAS Extension describes a household recipe using baking soda, salt and white vinegar, followed by flushing with water. Poison Control notes that some accounts attribute limited drain movement to carbon-dioxide pressure. This may agitate light residue, but it is not a dependable treatment for a serious blockage.
Use this approach only when no commercial drain opener has been used and no such product remains in standing water. Combining chemicals in a drain can create an unpredictable reaction or expose you to corrosive residue. For a persistent clog, mechanical removal is safer and more reliable.

- Confirm that the drain has not recently received a commercial opener and that standing water is not contaminated with one.
- Add the extension service’s baking-soda-and-salt mixture, followed by white vinegar, without sealing the drain line.
- Allow the reaction to finish, then flush as directed with water.
- If water still backs up, stop adding chemicals and use a cup plunger or plumber’s snake. A recurring blockage needs a plumber’s assessment.
Why separate use usually cleans better
| Cleaning need | Better choice | How it works | Important cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mineral scale and hard-water deposits | Vinegar used alone | Its acetic acid dissolves many acid-soluble mineral deposits. | Test an inconspicuous area; acids can damage some stone, finishes and metals. Rinse after use and ventilate. |
| Gentle scrubbing and odor control | Baking soda with water | The mild abrasive action helps lift soil, while the powder can absorb some odors. | Use a damp paste rather than creating a sealed mixture; rinse residue from the surface. |
| Grease, hair or a solid obstruction in a drain | Plunger or plumber’s snake | Mechanical force moves or removes the obstruction without relying on a chemical reaction. | Do not plunge if hazardous drain chemicals may still be present; follow the product label and seek professional help. |
| Unknown or mixed household soil | Identify the soil first | Select an acid, mild abrasive or mechanical method for the specific material instead of neutralizing two ingredients together. | Rinse between products and avoid storing a premixed spray. |
Safety boundaries you should not cross
- Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. University of Florida IFAS Extension warns that the combination can produce dangerous toxic fumes.
- Never seal baking soda and vinegar. A capped bottle, closed drain line or other vessel can build pressure as carbon dioxide forms.
- Keep the drain recipe away from commercial openers. Do not use it after an opener has been added or while opener-contaminated water is standing in the drain.
- Ventilate and protect skin and eyes. Even a familiar kitchen mixture can splash during foaming; keep children and pets away.
- Follow product labels. Commercial cleaners may contain acids, bases or oxidizers that should not be combined with household ingredients.
Is the fizz actually cleaning?
It can loosen a small amount of residue through bubbling and agitation, particularly in an open drain, but the gas is not a universal soil remover. The same reaction that creates the dramatic foam also neutralizes the properties you might have wanted: vinegar’s acidity for mineral scale or baking soda’s mild alkalinity and abrasive texture. After the reaction, rinsing removes a sodium-acetate solution; it does not restore either ingredient’s original cleaning action.
For a visible experiment, mix them openly and in small quantities. For routine housekeeping, apply vinegar or baking soda separately according to the surface and soil, rinse before switching products, and use mechanical tools for stubborn drain blockages.
