Custom PC building has room for three very different approaches: repurposing unusual or older hardware, building a balanced system for everyday use, and commissioning a high-end PC as a piece of gaming art. The right path depends on more than performance: total cost, parts availability, setup effort, serviceability and how much you value a distinctive design all matter. In a September 24, 2026, essay, Tom’s Hardware author Matt Safford presents these as plausible futures for the hobby—not as a measured forecast of how the market will divide.
What are the three paths for custom PC building?
They differ in what the builder is trying to optimize. A reuse project puts curiosity and resourcefulness ahead of convenience. A conventional, middle-ground build aims for a useful balance of cost, performance and effort. A premium showcase build treats the computer’s appearance and construction as part of the result, sometimes at a substantial cost.

| Approach | What it prioritizes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Repurpose older or unusual parts | Giving hardware a new role, learning and experimentation | Compatibility research, setup work and uncertainty about the specific parts |
| Build a conventional PC | A practical balance of cost, performance and effort | Less room for unusual hardware or elaborate bespoke design |
| Commission or create a showcase PC | Theme, materials, fabrication and visible presentation | More design and construction work; case studies do not establish typical cost or performance |
These are choices, not mutually exclusive categories or guarantees of a particular experience. A reuse build can be visually striking, and an art-focused PC still has to work as a computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat can you do with old PC parts?
There are at least two distinct answers: make an old component functional in a new system, or use it as a decorative element. The second can give obsolete hardware a place in a design, but it should not be mistaken for proof that arbitrary salvaged parts are reliable or suitable for everyday computing.

Turn unusual hardware into a working project
Safford’s example is the BC-250, a board built around 2021-era, PlayStation 5-derived APU silicon that was repurposed as a cryptomining card and later adapted by community BIOS and driver work for Linux gaming. It has 16 GB of shared GDDR6 memory. Possible core or compute-unit unlocking varies by sample, so it is not a dependable feature to count on.
This is a project, not a plug-and-play gaming upgrade. The process described involves sourcing the unusual board, flashing a community BIOS, installing Linux and drivers, and supplying a power supply and the other parts needed for a complete computer. That combination of community-developed firmware, operating-system setup and sample variation makes it a better fit for a builder who enjoys troubleshooting than for someone who simply wants a ready-to-use system.
Use parts as part of the visual design
Kingston Technology’s custom-build projects show a different kind of reuse: an old memory module and an old SSD mounted externally as decorative details, while separate, identified memory and storage serve the computer. That is a design decision, not a functional test of the displayed parts.

Kingston also reports the time spent on three of its projects: 480 hours for AK’s Memory Nexus, 360 hours for YM’s Jetpack and 600 hours for Mark’s Spaceship. These are project-specific figures reported by Kingston, not estimates of how long a typical PC build takes. One project began with an open-frame case; that kind of chassis can suit a visible build, but component fit, airflow, dust exposure and intended use still need consideration.
What makes a premium PC a work of gaming art?
In the MP-Customized examples, the case is not just a container chosen after the hardware. The exterior, theme, cooling and access for maintenance are treated as parts of one design. The projects illustrate what bespoke fabrication can look like, but do not establish a typical price, gaming performance or how common such commissions are.
C4 Apex: a prop-like exterior with a serviceable rear
The 2025 C4 Apex commission pairs an exterior designed to look like a prop with an open, serviceable rear. The contrast is instructive: an elaborate front or shell need not mean every part of the computer is inaccessible. When considering a similar build, access for maintenance is a design requirement, not an afterthought.

The Martini Racing project uses racing livery and custom forms inspired by automotive cooling. Its design connects the computer’s theme to its physical construction rather than relying on decals alone.

ARC uses layered geometry with lighting and ventilation integrated into the visual arrangement. It demonstrates a practical constraint of showcase work: openings and airflow have to coexist with the shapes that make the case distinctive.
What does an ultra-premium build cost?
A striking example in Safford’s September 2026 article is an ROG Edition 20 build estimated at about $15,000, including approximately $2,000 of peripherals. The estimate includes a $3,300 motherboard-and-cooler combination and a $6,000 RTX 5090. Safford says a configuration with more memory and storage—128 GB and 8 TB—could reach about $20,000. These are figures for that dated example, not current market quotes or a general price guide.

- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.

- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
The point is not that every bespoke PC costs this much. It is that the premium branch can combine expensive hardware with enclosure design and fabrication, making it a fundamentally different decision from choosing parts for a conventional build. A high budget alone also does not establish that a computer will be easy to service or that its appearance suits every buyer.

If your priority is a system under $2,000 that works without extensive tinkering, Safford points readers toward alternatives such as consoles, gaming laptops, handhelds and console-like PCs. Which one makes sense depends on the games you play and the form factor you want; the examples are options to consider, not a universal ranking.

Safford also argues that economic pressure could shrink the mainstream custom-desktop segment. That is his interpretation of current pressures, not a published market statistic or a settled prediction. It is still a useful distinction for buyers: the most accessible reason to build a PC may be less compelling when a simpler device already meets their needs, while reuse projects and bespoke builds offer motivations beyond straightforward value.

How should you choose an approach?
Start with what you want from the computer, then weigh the practical trade-offs. A part that is inexpensive or already on hand may still demand substantial time, compatible supporting hardware or a willingness to troubleshoot.
- Compare total cost and availability. Include the supporting parts a project needs, not just its unusual or headline component. For a commissioned build, the case studies do not provide a typical project price.
- Check compatibility and upgrade options. A distinctive part or chassis is only useful if it works with the rest of the system and leaves a path for the changes you expect to make.
- Be realistic about setup effort. Community firmware, Linux installation and driver work can make a reuse project rewarding, but they add work that a ready-to-use system avoids.
- Consider cooling and service access. Open or sculptural designs need to accommodate ventilation, component fit and maintenance as well as appearance.
- Decide how much customization matters to you. If the visual design is central, fabrication can be part of the project’s value. If it is not, the additional work may have little practical benefit.
The three paths reflect different reasons to build: make use of unusual hardware, assemble a practical everyday machine, or create a computer whose design is an end in itself. None is inherently the best choice; the useful question is which trade-offs match your needs and appetite for the work.
