The first game introduces the AI-in-a-simulation premise that the sequel builds on. You can start with the sequel, though: it introduces a new setting and mystery of its own.
Which Talos Principle should you play first?
For the clearest narrative progression, start with The Talos Principle. Released in 2014, it puts you in the role of a sentient AI solving puzzles in a simulation of humanity’s ruins. The sequel continues that story’s ideas and perspective while widening its scope. PlayStation’s description of the original frames it as a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning.

Playing the original first is a recommendation for context, not a requirement. The Talos Principle 2 establishes its own premise: biological humanity is gone, a society of robots has inherited human culture, and a mysterious megastructure becomes the focus of exploration. If that setting interests you more, you can begin there without needing to treat the sequel as inaccessible to newcomers. PlayStation’s sequel listing introduces that setup.
How do the stories differ?
The Talos Principle: an AI and a test of meaning
The original keeps the player close to an AI inside a simulation. Its puzzle spaces and philosophical framing ask questions about intelligence, human legacy, and meaning in a world presented as doomed. Its focus is intimate: the player’s understanding of the simulation and their place in it develops alongside the puzzles.
#1 Best Overall
- Overcome more than 120 immersive puzzles in a stunning world.
- Divert drones, disable turrets, and even replicate time to prove your worth - or to find a way out.
- Explore a story about humanity, technology, and civilization. Uncover clues, devise theories, and make up your own mind.
- Choose your own path through the game's non-linear world, solving puzzles your way.
- But remember: choices have consequences, and somebody's always watching you.
The Talos Principle 2: a robot civilization and its future
The sequel moves into a society shaped by humanity’s disappearance. Its character-driven story follows an investigation of the megastructure and raises broader questions about civilization, the cosmos, and what humanity left behind. Player choices affect events, and the official listing describes multiple endings. Returning writers Jonas Kyratzes and Tom Jubert worked on the story with Verena Kyratzes. The Steam listing for the sequel describes its story and cast of writers.
How are the puzzles different?
The first game is described in official listings as a progression of increasingly complex puzzles. The sequel carries forward established mechanics but adds abilities including gravity manipulation and mind transference. That mix gives it new ways to combine familiar tools with novel interactions; it is not simply a larger set of the original’s puzzles. The sequel also includes metapuzzles and particularly challenging Gold puzzles. Steam’s description names the new abilities and challenge types.

In the sequel, completing the main game does not require solving every puzzle. Players can follow a less exhaustive route or pursue complete mastery by tackling optional puzzles. That distinction matters if you enjoy exploring every puzzle space but do not want full completion to be a prerequisite for finishing the story.
Is The Talos Principle 2 harder than the first game?
There is no established, directly comparable difficulty scale for the two games, so it would be misleading to call one objectively harder. The original is characterized by puzzles that grow increasingly complex. The sequel adds new mechanics, metapuzzles, and demanding Gold puzzles, while allowing players to finish without solving everything. Your experience will depend on which tools and puzzle combinations you find intuitive, and whether you choose to pursue optional challenges.
Rank #3
- A New Generation of Puzzles: Solve a wide array of puzzles with varying difficulty levels, including clever metapuzzles and highly challenging Gold puzzles. Finish the game without solving every puzzle, or pursue the rewards of complete mastery. A variety of new abilities, such as gravity manipulation and mind transference, join the established mechanics of the original Talos Principle, creating a fresh but familiar experience.
- A Philosophical Odyssey: Take the next step forward in the story of The Talos Principle in a thought-provoking, character-driven interactive story with multiple endings penned by returning writers Jonas Kyratzes (The Eternal Cylinder, Clash: Artifacts of Chaos) and Tom Jubert (The Swapper, Subnautica), joined by Verena Kyratzes (The Hand of Merlin, Serious Sam 4).
- Brave New World: Explore more than a dozen all-new environments, from a city on the brink of a paradigm shift to the varied landscapes of a mysterious island that holds the keys to the future. Take a break from puzzle-solving to discover long-buried secrets and strands of forgotten history.
- The Melodies of Creation: Immerse yourself in the rich, bittersweet world of The Talos Principle with a stunning soundtrack by master composer Damjan Mravunac (Serious Sam, The Talos Principle), with a guest appearance by Chris Christodoulou (Risk of Rain 1 and 2).
Can you start with The Talos Principle 2?
Yes. Its robot-society premise and megastructure mystery provide a clear entry point, and its core puzzle description signals that established mechanics remain part of the experience. Starting with the sequel means encountering the series’ wider world before the original’s AI-in-simulation setup, so some narrative context and development will land differently. Choose it first if its setting or newer mechanics are the stronger draw; choose the original first if you want the intended story progression.
Where does Road to Elysium fit?
Road to Elysium is a three-part coda that follows the events of The Talos Principle 2, so play it after the sequel. It requires the base game and revisits characters and events across three chapters: Orpheus Ascending, Isle of the Blessed, and Into the Abyss. The chapters vary in tone and puzzle difficulty. Steam’s expansion listing describes the chapters and base-game requirement.
