Unicode changes what the text represents: Kannada characters are encoded as standardized text rather than inferred from font-specific byte values. The difference matters for copying, searching, sharing, and preserving Kannada—but conversion must match the legacy encoding, and Unicode alone cannot guarantee correct shaping or attractive typography.
Why old Kannada text can become gibberish
In a legacy font-based scheme, the stored values may not represent Kannada characters in a standardized way. A particular font displays those values as Kannada glyphs; without the right font and mapping, another application may show unrelated Latin characters or symbols instead. The text can therefore appear readable in its original document while failing to behave like Kannada when copied, searched, or opened elsewhere.

The Centre for Internet and Society documented the practical problem of older non-Unicode Kannada text, including material in PageMaker files, and described converting it to Unicode. What Unicode changes—and what it does not
Unicode assigns standardized character identities to Kannada text in the Kannada block, U+0C80 through U+0CFF. That identity is distinct from the design of the font used to display it. A Unicode string can be copied and transmitted as Kannada text without depending on the original legacy font’s private mapping, provided the receiving software supports Kannada.

Kannada writing also depends on shaping. For example, virama U+0CCD suppresses a consonant’s inherent vowel, and consonant sequences can form conjuncts. Those visual forms are produced contextually from encoded sequences; Unicode does not assign a separate character to every possible conjunct glyph. So three things should not be conflated: encoding determines the character identities in the text; a font supplies glyph designs; and an application’s shaping support determines how character sequences are arranged and rendered. Unicode solves the first problem. A compatible font and shaping engine are still needed for correct display, and a different typeface may look different without changing the underlying text.
How to convert legacy Kannada text
Use a converter that explicitly supports the source encoding or font family. “Nudi” or “Baraha” can point to a legacy format, but a converter should not be assumed to handle every version, font, or document automatically. Sanchaya’s project lists Nudi, Baraha, ShreeLipi, Prakashak, Akruti, Surabhi, ISM, and other legacy formats, and describes conversion among them and Unicode. It accepts TXT and DOCX input and produces TXT output, according to its repository. Check the Sanchaya Kannada font converter project for its stated formats and capabilities.

- Identify the source. Find out which legacy encoding or font family the document uses. If the source is unknown, test on a copy and compare likely converter options rather than treating one mapping as universal.
- Choose the matching conversion. Set the source encoding and convert from legacy text to Unicode Kannada. A font file alone is not necessarily enough to identify the encoding.
- Inspect the converted text. Check conjuncts, vowel signs, punctuation, Latin text, and numbers against the original. Conversion can be encoding-specific, and an incorrect mapping can produce incorrect text even if the result uses Unicode.
- Test outside the converter. Open or paste the output in another Kannada-capable application, then try searching and copying a few words. This checks whether you have usable Unicode text rather than merely a preview that looks right in one place.
Sanchaya says its converter uses round-trip testing with 2,077 cases per font. That is a reported number of test cases, not a stated pass rate or an independent audit. Its separate support for multiple legacy formats is a reminder that converter coverage depends on the specific source mapping.

What the titled post claims about its converter
In a post dated September 20, 2026, Reddit user u_ravikiranb36 says they built conversion architecture for legacy Nudi ASCII fonts and offers it at lipi.rvanveshana.com. The post describes the result as “100% compliant” and says it avoids broken ottaksharas. Those are the author’s claims; the available account does not independently establish the project’s font inventory, supported inputs and outputs, reproducible test results, cross-application behavior, or privacy terms. Treat it as a potentially useful option to evaluate with a copy of your own document, not as a verified guarantee. Read the original post.

Font-map conversion works on text whose stored characters can be mapped from a known legacy encoding. A scanned page or image-only PDF has no underlying Kannada character text to remap; it needs OCR, followed by proofreading. A mixed or damaged document may also need manual checking even when much of its text converts correctly.

For archival context, Shaili Sanchaya presents historical Kannada type specimens and digitized books, rather than a substitute for converting a particular document.
