Its software connected tickets with contracts and cash bids, then expanded into farm management, commercial workflows, integrations and digital payments. Bushel now describes that broader role as agriculture’s “digital infrastructure”—a software layer linking farmers with elevators, cooperatives, retailers, lenders and processors without replacing those existing relationships.
What Bushel is
Bushel is an independently owned agricultural-software company headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota. It sells business-to-business infrastructure while providing farmer-facing mobile and web interfaces. Its stated audiences include farmers, grain buyers, cooperatives, ag retailers, lenders, protein producers, food companies and other supply-chain participants. Bushel’s company description says it is not a marketplace; its purpose is to help existing agricultural businesses communicate and transact digitally.

That distinction matters. A generic farm-recordkeeping app serves one operation. Bushel’s platform is designed to connect the farmer’s records with a buyer’s contracts, an elevator’s scale system, a retailer’s customer tools and, increasingly, payment workflows.
The founders saw a commercial problem, not a lack of farm technology
Co-founder Ryan Raguse brought an unusual combination of experience: he was a sixth-generation Minnesota farmer, an accounting student and a mobile-app entrepreneur. Before Bushel, Raguse and colleagues at Myriad Mobile developed applications for several industries. Work with sugarbeet cooperative members showed them that agricultural equipment and field technology were advancing while the commercial side of farming remained fragmented. Agriculture.com’s account of Bushel’s origin describes the resulting insight: farmers did not lack technology, but their dealings with grain facilities still involved paper, calls, disconnected systems and manual reconciliation.

The 2017 starting point: digitizing the scale ticket
The first Bushel workflow focused on a deceptively important document—the scale ticket.
- A farmer delivers grain to a facility.
- The facility weighs and grades the load.
- The farmer receives a ticket or receipt.
- That information must be matched to contracts, commodity balances, bids, settlements and accounting records.
Bushel’s initial app put scale tickets, contracts and cash bids in one digital experience. The value was more than avoiding paper. Real-time ticket information could help a farmer coordinate trucks, monitor moisture, check safety-related details and avoid overloaded vehicles, according to the company profile in Agriculture.com. For an elevator, digitization could reduce rekeying and the errors created when the same transaction was entered into several systems.
What Bushel means by “digital infrastructure”
Bushel uses the phrase to describe software and data connectivity for agriculture’s commercial flow—not roads, broadband networks, satellites or farm machinery. Its About page and 2024 State of the Farm Report frame the opportunity as a missing digital layer between agriculture’s extensive physical infrastructure and the people who operate it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Farmer and elevator systems exchange tickets, contracts, offers and balances.
- Commercial documents and signatures move through connected workflows.
- APIs allow software platforms to share information instead of forcing staff to re-enter it.
- Farmers can authorize selected data sharing with buyers or partners.
- Payments can move digitally alongside the information describing a transaction.
The thesis is therefore about the “messy middle” of agriculture: the handoffs between production, delivery, contracting, settlement and payment.
How the platform expanded
Branded apps and commercial workflows
Bushel moved from a single app to white-labeled mobile apps, websites and customer portals that grain companies and cooperatives can present under their own brands. Its software overview lists commodity balances, market feeds, e-signatures, offer and trade management, CRM, APIs and commercial workflow tools. A farmer can continue dealing with the local elevator while Bushel supplies the underlying technology.
Rank #2
An early North Dakota Agricultural Products Utilization Commission report documents the 2017–2018 positioning of Bushel and its developer, Myriad Mobile: connect agricultural information and transactions rather than create a new commodity exchange. The report is available here.
Farm management through FarmLogs
After acquiring FarmLogs, Bushel launched Bushel Farm on March 2, 2023. The product was positioned around field records, profitability, grain sales and operational economics, linking data from the farm side with information held by grain buyers. The launch announcement says farmers control whether selected operational data is shared with a grain buyer. Read the Bushel Farm announcement.
“Permissioned” should be read precisely. Data may be stored in a platform, visible to the farmer, shared with a buyer for a particular program or contract, or used to produce derived information. Buyers should establish which permissions can be revoked, how long records are retained, how exports work and which contract governs derived data. Those details can differ by product and deployment.
Digital payments
In June 2022, Bushel announced a digital payment network for U.S. agriculture. Payments move the company’s ambition beyond information delivery: a ticket or contract can become part of a workflow that ends in settlement. The announcement presents the network as a way to reduce dependence on paper checks and streamline money movement between agribusinesses and farmers. See the payment-network announcement.
Digital payment functionality is not the same as being a bank, and faster processing is not a guarantee of payment. Onboarding, identity verification, fraud controls, fees, settlement timing, reconciliation and account protections must be checked in the applicable product terms. Bushel’s 2023 funding announcement also mentioned settlement payments, ag lending and invoice payments as areas of activity. That announcement is the source for those company-described initiatives.

Acquisitions, integrations and the network model
Bushel’s acquisitions and partnerships show an attempt to build an ecosystem rather than a single-purpose app.

The model has two sides. Agribusinesses adopt Bushel and offer branded digital experiences; farmers use those experiences to view tickets, contracts, bids, balances or payments. Google Cloud reported more than 200 grain companies and more than 2,000 grain receiving locations using Bushel products at the time of its 2022 article.
What the adoption numbers do—and do not—prove
| Reported figure | Date and source | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 2,000 grain receiving locations | Google Cloud, 2022 | Partner-reported locations, not necessarily unique companies or farmers. |
| More than 2,600 grain and ag-retail locations; more than 100,000 farmers | Bushel funding announcement, August 2023 | Company-reported totals; the announcement does not establish independent market share. |
| More than 45% of farm-originated grain in the U.S. and Canada, estimated at 10 billion bushels annually | Bushel funding announcement, August 2023 | A company claim about account-related data and grain volume; it is not directly interchangeable with the share of farmers using the app. |
| More than 3,500 grain facilities | Bushel LinkedIn profile | Self-reported profile language; date and counting method can change. |
“Facilities,” “companies,” “farmers” and “grain origination” are different denominators. U.S. and U.S.-Canada figures are also not comparable without the same geography and measurement period. These numbers demonstrate reach claimed by Bushel and its partners, not an audited industry market-share measurement.
Who gets value from the platform?
Farmers
- Immediate access to tickets, contracts, bids, balances and delivery information.
- Less paper and fewer calls to obtain routine records.
- Connections between farm profitability, field records and grain sales.
- Potentially more convenient digital settlement.
Grain buyers and cooperatives
- Branded communication with growers.
- Digital contracting, signatures, offers and customer records.
- Less duplicate entry and reconciliation.
- Additional payment and portal capabilities without building every component internally.
Ag retailers and other partners
Retailers may use CRM and customer-communication tools, while lenders or other partners may benefit from timely, permissioned operational or financial information. Exact availability depends on the deployment and should not be assumed from the general platform description.
Limits and risks behind the infrastructure thesis
Participation is local
A farmer may gain little from an app if the relevant elevator or buyer does not use Bushel. The strongest value appears when a farmer’s existing commercial partners participate.

Integration can shift, not eliminate, work
Incomplete ERP or accounting integration can leave staff rekeying information. Migration, historical-data mapping, training and workflow redesign may create substantial implementation work for an agribusiness.
Data governance remains a real question
Permission controls are preferable to undisclosed sharing, but users should ask who controls the account, whether permissions differ among products, how derived data is treated, and whether records can be exported in a usable format.
Harvest raises reliability requirements
Connectivity failures, outages or slow support are more consequential during delivery peaks than during ordinary office work. Buyers should review uptime history, disaster recovery, offline behavior and peak-season support commitments.
Payments add compliance and security obligations
Enrollment failures, identity checks, fraud attempts or reconciliation errors can delay a settlement. A payment feature should be evaluated separately from the convenience of a mobile interface.
How to decide whether Bushel fits
- Define the primary workflow: farm management, grain origination, elevator operations, CRM, payments or a combination.
- Map existing systems: identify ERP, accounting, machinery, agronomy and marketing software that must exchange data.
- Confirm local participation: ask the elevator, cooperative or buyer which Bushel products and integrations are active.
- Review governance: check permissions, revocation, retention, deletion, portability and treatment of derived data.
- Test operating conditions: verify crop and geography support, multi-entity access, offline behavior and seasonal support.
- Calculate total cost: include subscription, implementation, integration, training, support and payment-related charges.

This self-serve offering is most relevant to row-crop farms seeking field records, profitability, grain marketing and storage information in one system. It is less likely to fit livestock-heavy, highly specialized or extensively customized ERP requirements.
Enterprise alternatives
Bushel’s enterprise products appear to use demo-led or custom pricing. Grain companies should compare its branded experiences, integrations, CRM, contracts and payments with systems focused more narrowly on grain trading and inventory. AgriDigital, for example, markets farmer, site-operator, trader, broker, inventory, contract, delivery, invoice, payment and finance tools. Its help center describes grower use as free while buyer or site-operator services carry fees, and trade pricing is customized. See AgriDigital’s demo page, platform overview, trade page and pricing FAQ.
What Bushel’s mission ultimately means
Bushel’s story is the movement of agriculture’s commercial “messy middle” from paper and phone calls toward connected, permissioned software. The company started with scale tickets because that small document exposed a larger problem: production, delivery, contracting and payment were often recorded in separate places. Its subsequent products, acquisitions and payment network pursue a single strategic idea—make those handoffs behave more like a connected system while leaving the farmer’s relationship with the local buyer intact.
Recommended Free Tools
That mission is most credible where participating agribusinesses, integrations and governance practices line up. It does not make every agricultural system interoperable, eliminate rural connectivity constraints or remove the need to scrutinize vendor dependence, data rights and payment controls. For a farmer, the first practical question is whether the elevator or buyer already uses Bushel. For an enterprise, the decisive questions are integration effort, implementation support, reliability, data portability and the total cost of replacing manual work.
