Smartphone ASP reached $357 globally in 2024, and Counterpoint Research projected $370 for 2025. Separately, a commercial estimate put the application-service-provider hosting market at $11.5 billion in 2025. These figures describe different markets and should not be compared as though they measure the same thing.
What does ASP mean?
In smartphone market analysis, ASP is the average selling price: a blended measure of the revenue earned per phone sold across a defined market and period. It is not the price of a particular model, nor does it tell you what a typical shopper paid. A change in the mix of phones sold can move the average even if individual model prices do not change.

In business technology, an application service provider (ASP) delivers software applications to customers over a network, typically hosting and supporting the software rather than requiring each customer to run it entirely on its own infrastructure. This is a service-delivery model, not a smartphone pricing metric. The two meanings have separate market sizes, buyers and evidence.
What is the global smartphone ASP?
Counterpoint Research reported a global smartphone ASP of $357 in calendar year 2024, the highest annual level in its report. The same Q4 2024 market monitor said smartphone revenue grew 5% year over year while ASP grew 2%.

In a September 2025 outlook, Counterpoint projected global smartphone ASP would rise 3.5% year over year to $370 in 2025. That is a forecast, not a subsequently confirmed result; the figures available here do not establish the actual 2025 outcome or a 2026 ASP.
Why is smartphone ASP rising?
Premiumization and higher-value features
Counterpoint attributes the upward trend to premiumization, demand for feature-rich devices, and preference for flagship form factors. If a greater share of buyers chooses higher-priced phones, the market average can rise even without equivalent price increases across every model.
5G migration
Migration from non-5G to 5G phones can raise the blended ASP when 5G models carry higher prices or make up a larger share of sales. Counterpoint also notes that falling 5G component costs over time can moderate that pressure. The available global figures do not break out separate 5G and non-5G ASPs, so they cannot quantify the size of that effect.

Generative-AI hardware costs
Counterpoint says the operational complexity and higher component costs associated with generative-AI features can push device bills of materials upward. That is a cost-side pressure, not proof that every AI-enabled phone will sell at a higher price or that manufacturers will pass all added costs to buyers.
Replacement behavior and tougher shipment growth
Counterpoint describes mature-market users replacing phones less often while showing preference for higher-value or innovative devices. It also notes that major Chinese manufacturers are emphasizing premium launches as shipment growth becomes harder to sustain. Longer replacement cycles can restrain unit sales, while a shift toward more expensive models can still lift the average selling price.
How to read ASP alongside shipments and revenue
ASP, unit shipments and revenue measure different things. In simplified terms, average selling price is revenue divided by units sold over the same market and period. Revenue can therefore grow while shipments flatten or decline if the mix shifts toward more expensive phones; conversely, shipments can rise without much revenue growth if lower-priced phones account for most of the increase.

For example, if a market sells fewer entry-level phones but more premium models, its ASP may rise even if the price of each model is unchanged. That does not by itself show that all consumers are paying more, that premium phones have taken share everywhere, or that total demand is stronger. Counterpoint’s 2024 figures illustrate why both measures matter: reported revenue growth was 5% year over year, compared with 2% ASP growth.

An ASP comparison is meaningful only when its market definition and period match. Before comparing figures, check:
- Geography: global, regional and country averages can differ with local incomes, taxes, promotions and product availability. The $357 and projected $370 figures above are global, not country-level values.
- Brand and price-tier mix: a market with more premium-brand or flagship sales can have a higher blended ASP than one dominated by value models. The available global figures do not provide brand-tier values.
- Network generation: compare 5G with non-5G only when the figures use the same geography, period and method. No such split is established by the global figures cited here.
- Time period and status: distinguish an observed calendar-year result from a forecast. The 2024 amount is reported; the 2025 amount was projected in September 2025.
- Shipments and revenue: inspect all three measures when judging market growth. A higher ASP alone cannot show whether more phones were sold.
What is the application service provider market?
For the hosted-software meaning of ASP, Future Market Report estimated the global application-service-provider hosting market at USD 11,500.75 million in 2025 and projected USD 21,900.60 million by 2033, implying an 8.38% CAGR. It identified customer relationship management (CRM) as the largest application segment, at 29.5% of revenue. These are commercial market estimates, not a regulator’s or statistical agency’s market series.

Those figures should not be read as the market size for every hosted application, cloud service or modern SaaS product. The ASP label covers a service-delivery concept; the precise category included in a market estimate depends on that publisher’s definition.
How ASP relates to SaaS
ASP and software as a service (SaaS) both involve accessing software hosted and delivered by a provider, so the terms overlap in ordinary discussion. They are not automatically interchangeable in every market report or contract. The historical ASP sources cited here discuss hosted application delivery, while the available evidence does not establish a universal technical boundary between ASP and SaaS. For a specific product or estimate, check how the provider or analyst defines the service.

Applications commonly delivered by ASPs
Datamation’s historical analysis reported communications applications as the most prevalent among surveyed users, followed by financial and accounting applications, e-commerce, customer service and CRM, and education and training. That is a historical survey finding, not a current ranking of software demand.

Benefits and risks of the hosted model
A risk-assessment paper identifies potential benefits including lower total cost of ownership, less need for in-house IT staff, faster application delivery, scalability and cash-flow advantages. It also warns of supplier power, overstated capabilities, subcontracting, internet security and reliability risks. These are considerations to assess in a particular service arrangement, not guarantees that every ASP will deliver the benefits or suffer the risks.

The smartphone data establish a rising global blended average through the 2025 forecast, with premiumization, 5G migration and feature-rich devices among the cited upward forces. They do not establish the 2025 actual, a 2026 market result, a country-level price, or whether premium phones have displaced budget phones in every region. The application-service-provider estimate describes a separate hosted-software market and should be treated as a commercial projection rather than an official statistical count.
