The best deep-sky target tonight is the Wild Duck Cluster (M11, also cataloged as NGC 6705), a young open cluster in Scutum. From around 40° north latitude and 90° west longitude, it stands about 40° above the southern horizon one hour after sunset and remains above 30° in the southwest an hour later. At magnitude 5.8, M11 is a practical binocular target even with the 36%-illuminated waxing crescent Moon nearby.

How to find the Wild Duck Cluster

Choose an unobstructed view to the south immediately after sunset. As the evening advances, follow the target toward the southwest. M11 lies in Scutum, near the Milky Way and the Sagittarius Teapot region. The cluster is compact and can look like a small, hazy patch in binoculars; a telescope begins to separate that glow into many individual stars.

  1. Wait until the sky is dark enough to show the brighter stars, then face south.
  2. Use a current star chart or planetarium app set to your exact city to identify Scutum and the nearby Sagittarius Teapot.
  3. Sweep slowly with binoculars until you find M11. A 10×50 pair is a useful general-purpose choice because its 10-power view helps reveal the cluster while retaining enough field of view for star-hopping.
  4. Switch to a telescope if you want to resolve more of M11’s dense stellar grouping. Increase magnification gradually; excessive power can make locating the compact cluster harder.

The altitude figures above are reference values for 40° N, 90° W, not universal times or positions. Latitude, longitude, local horizon obstructions and daylight-saving rules all change the view. Substitute your location before planning a precise observation.

What the Moon changes tonight

The reference almanac shows a 36% waxing crescent Moon that sets at 10:05 p.m. local time. Its light can wash out the Milky Way’s faint background, but M11’s magnitude 5.8 makes the cluster accessible in binoculars or a telescope. After moonset, return to the same area for a darker view and more surrounding stars.

For observers in North America, the crescent appears just upper right of the Sagittarius Teapot after dark. That landmark is useful for orientation, although its exact position relative to the horizon depends on your location.

Equipment choices for M11

Option Locating M11 Stellar detail Portability Moonlight and light pollution
Naked eye Usually difficult at magnitude 5.8, especially under suburban skies Does not resolve the cluster Excellent Most affected by bright skies
10×50 binoculars Wide field makes star-hopping straightforward Shows the compact glow and some brighter stars High Works despite the crescent Moon, though the background is brighter
Beginner telescope Narrower field may require a chart and careful alignment Resolves substantially more of the dense star grouping Lower More detail remains visible through moderate moonlight; dark skies still help

Optical performance varies with aperture, magnification, alignment and sky quality, so these are observing trade-offs rather than guarantees for a particular instrument.

Watch Algol fade and recover

Algol, the eclipsing binary in Perseus, is predicted to reach a minimum near 9:52 p.m. EDT on October 17 (0200 UTC on October 18). At minimum it should be about magnitude 3.4, compared with its usual magnitude 2.1. Find Algol before the predicted minimum and compare it with nearby Mirfak or Almach, then check again later as it brightens.

Algol’s eclipse repeats on a 2.87-day cycle. The change is easiest to notice by comparing it with nearby stars of known, steady brightness rather than relying on memory.

Planets visible at different times

Saturn is visible for most of the night. Mars and Jupiter are better targets before sunrise, while Uranus and Neptune are fainter binocular objects. Their rise and set times depend strongly on your city, date settings and horizon, so use a location-specific chart rather than applying a single national timetable.

What is coming next

October 17 is not the date of the next first-quarter Moon or the Orionid meteor-shower peak. NASA’s 2026 SkyCal places first quarter on October 18 at 16:13 UTC and the Orionids on October 21 at 18:16 UTC. Those events provide useful follow-up observing opportunities, but they do not replace tonight’s M11 and Algol targets.
