The best chance to see the 2026 Orionid meteor shower is after midnight and before dawn on October 22, during the shower’s peak night of October 21–22. NASA places the peak at 18:16 UTC on October 21. A 75%-illuminated waxing-gibbous Moon will hide many faint meteors early in the night, but it should set at about 3 a.m. local time in this year’s setup, leaving the darkest hours before dawn for observing.
When and where to watch the Orionids
Start observing after midnight on the night of October 21 into October 22, then concentrate on the period after local moonset until dawn. The exact moonset time changes with location, so check a local sky calendar or astronomy app for your site rather than treating 3 a.m. as universal.

Choose the darkest safe place you can reach. A rural or officially dark location gives the shower its best chance, while a suburban backyard can still produce visible meteors if trees, buildings and direct lights are limited. Prioritize these factors when selecting a site:

How many meteors you might see
NASA’s typical Orionid rate is about 10–20 meteors per hour under dark skies. For October 2026, NASA estimates roughly 3–6 per hour from suburban areas, with darker sites seeing a few more. These are observing rates, not a guarantee: clouds, light pollution, the radiant’s altitude, your latitude and how fully your eyes have adapted to darkness can all reduce the count.

The bright Moon is the main additional limitation this year. The American Meteor Society lists the Moon as 75% illuminated on the October 21–22 peak, and NASA warns that its light will wash out some of the fainter meteors. A clear, dark interval after moonset is therefore more valuable than simply spending a longer time outside before midnight.
Why the Orionids are fast and bright
Orionids are particles shed by 1P/Halley’s Comet. Earth crosses that debris stream each year, and the grains strike the atmosphere at about 66 kilometers per second (41 miles per second), producing quick streaks of light. The shower is active through November 7, so meteors remain possible after the peak even though rates are generally lower.

Where to look in the sky
The Orionids’ radiant—the point from which the meteors appear to fan out—is just north of Betelgeuse in Orion. This is a perspective effect: the particles’ paths are broadly parallel, but from the ground they seem to diverge from one area of the sky.

A practical plan for October 16–23
October 16–17: Get oriented
Use the evening to identify Orion and nearby bright targets. NASA notes that the Pleiades can be seen without optical aid; binoculars or a telescope reveal more of the cluster’s detail. These bright targets remain useful while moonlight makes fainter deep-sky objects difficult.
October 18: First-quarter Moon
NASA SkyCal lists first-quarter Moon at 16:13 UTC. Increasing lunar light will make faint galaxies and nebulae harder to see, so favor bright clusters, planets and basic constellation practice.

October 19–20: Rehearse the setup
Visit or confirm your observing site, check the weather, and determine the local moonset time. Bring a reclining chair or ground pad, warm layers and a red-light setting for essential tasks. Avoid repeatedly looking at white phone screens, which slows dark adaptation.
October 21–22: Main meteor watch
Settle in after midnight and continue through the hours after moonset until dawn. Give your eyes time to adapt, scan a wide area rather than one constellation, and record the time and direction of each meteor only if doing so does not pull your attention from the sky.

October 22–23: More meteors and a planetary pairing
Residual Orionid activity remains possible because the shower continues through November 7. October 23 also features a Moon–Saturn pairing in monthly observing guides. Treat it as a separate target: compare its brightness, altitude and visibility with the meteor watch, and use binoculars or a telescope only when you want to examine the Moon, Saturn or other fixed objects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What equipment helps—and what does not
Meteors are best viewed with the naked eye. Binoculars have a narrow field of view and can cause you to miss fast streaks, but 10×50 astronomy binoculars are useful for bright clusters such as the Pleiades and for general skywatching before or after the meteor session. A telescope is likewise for planets and clusters, not for following meteors.
For photography, use a sturdy tripod, a wide-angle lens and continuous 15–30-second exposures. Aim toward a dark part of the sky and let the camera run while you watch. A camera records a different slice of the sky than your eyes do; it cannot replace dark adaptation or a broad visual scan.

Why your result may differ from the forecast
- Clouds: even thin cloud can erase faint streaks.
- Light pollution: suburban illumination suppresses the faint end of the shower.
- Moonlight: the 75%-lit Moon hides meteors until it sets.
- Radiant altitude: Orion’s height changes through the night and with latitude.
- Dark adaptation: bright screens and nearby lights reduce sensitivity.
- Chance: meteors arrive irregularly, so a few quiet minutes do not mean the shower has stopped.
