For a privacy-first Siri setup, turn off the voice trigger under Settings > Siri (or Apple Intelligence & Siri) > Talk to Siri or Requests, disable Allow Siri When Locked, restrict Siri Suggestions for sensitive apps, review whether Siri personalization is enabled in iCloud, and turn off Improve Siri & Dictation if you do not want Apple to store and review sample recordings and transcripts. These are separate controls: changing one does not automatically change the others.
Apple’s current pages use several labels, including Siri, Apple Intelligence & Siri, Talk to Siri, Talk & Type to Siri, and Requests. The exact wording and available features depend on the device, operating-system version, language, and region. Which Siri controls affect privacy?
Siri privacy is not one on/off switch. Five settings govern different parts of the experience: how the device is activated by voice, whether requests are accepted from the lock screen, which apps contribute personalized suggestions, whether personalization is shared across devices through iCloud, and whether you opt in to Siri and Dictation improvement samples.

Suggestions are enabled for apps by default, but their settings can be changed at any time. A strict privacy configuration usually changes all five areas; a convenience-oriented configuration may leave voice activation, lock-screen access, and app suggestions enabled.

Turn off Siri’s voice activation
Disable Siri or Hey Siri
- Open Settings.
- Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Open Talk to Siri, Talk & Type to Siri, or Requests, depending on the label shown.
- Select Off instead of Siri or Hey Siri.
With the trigger set to Off, the device no longer responds to those trigger phrases. Apple’s one-word Siri option is available only on supported models, languages, and regions; if it is not listed, choose Hey Siri or leave the trigger off.
Retrain the voice model
If Siri responds inconsistently to your voice, turn the voice trigger off and then back on. Follow the setup prompts to repeat the spoken phrases. This rebuilds the voice-trigger setup without changing the other Siri privacy controls.
Use a physical button or text instead
You can keep voice activation off and still use Siri manually. On iPhone, enable Press Side Button for Siri. On iPad, the equivalent is the top button. On supported devices, Type to Siri provides a text-based alternative when speaking is inappropriate or when you do not want to use a microphone trigger.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn off Allow Siri When Locked.
This setting is independent of voice activation. You can leave Siri or Hey Siri enabled for an unlocked phone while blocking requests until the passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID has been used. Conversely, turning off the voice trigger does not by itself remove button-based Siri access from the lock screen, so review both settings if lock-screen privacy is your goal.

Reduce spoken and visible Siri responses
Siri’s settings also determine how much of a request is presented aloud or on screen. Review the following options on the Siri settings page:
- Voice and language: choose the voice and language Siri uses.
- Spoken responses: choose when Siri answers aloud rather than presenting a primarily visual response.
- Always Show Siri Captions: keep transcribed responses visible on screen.
- Always Show Request: display the request text so you can verify what Siri interpreted.
For shared spaces, captions and request text can make interactions easier to verify, while reducing spoken responses can keep answers from being overheard. These presentation controls do not disable Siri, erase personalization, or change whether the device accepts a voice trigger.
Stop Siri from learning from specific apps
Open an app’s Siri controls
- Open Settings.
- Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app whose information should not shape Siri suggestions.
The app page contains its available learning and suggestion controls. The exact switches vary by operating-system version and app, so review every option shown rather than assuming that one master switch covers all surfaces.
Disable the surfaces that expose suggestions
Apple identifies four suggestion surfaces that can be turned off per app:

- Show in App: prevents Siri suggestions from appearing inside that app.
- Show on Home Screen: removes the app’s Siri suggestions from the Home Screen.
- Suggest App: stops Siri from recommending the app based on context.
- Suggestion Notifications: prevents notification-style Siri suggestions for that app.
If the app page presents a learning control, disable it when you do not want Siri to use that app’s activity to improve personalized suggestions. Then check the four display switches separately: stopping learning and hiding an existing suggestion are related but distinct outcomes.
Choose apps for targeted privacy
Apply the strictest settings to apps containing health, financial, work-confidential, relationship, or private-journal information. You can leave suggestions enabled for low-sensitivity apps where quick actions are useful. Because these controls can be changed at any time, you can temporarily allow suggestions for a workflow and disable them afterward.
Understand Siri personalization across devices
Apple says information used for Siri personalization is encrypted and remains private across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That personalization can make Siri more useful, but it also means that changes made on one device may contribute to a consistent experience on your other signed-in devices.

Stop personalization updates through iCloud
If you do not want Siri personalization to update across devices, Apple directs you to disable Siri in your iCloud settings. Open the iCloud settings associated with your Apple Account, locate the Siri control, and turn it off. The exact route and wording can vary with the operating-system version. This is separate from disabling the voice trigger on an individual iPhone or iPad.

What personalization can contain
Apple gives examples on iPad such as your name, home and work addresses, and relationships. That information enables requests such as getting directions home or calling someone by a relationship instead of by full name. If those shortcuts are valuable, keeping personalization enabled improves convenience; if cross-device sharing is not desirable, disable Siri in iCloud while managing each device’s activation and suggestion settings separately.
Decide whether to enable Improve Siri & Dictation
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Analytics & Improvements.
- Find Improve Siri & Dictation.
- Turn the switch off if you do not want to contribute improvement samples; turn it on only if you accept the stated data-use terms.
Apple describes this as optional. Its support wording is explicit: “When you turn it on, you agree to let Apple store and review a sample of your audio recordings and transcripts.” Turning the option off does not disable Siri, voice activation, lock-screen access, or per-app suggestions; it changes whether you contribute those samples for improvement.

Common problems and how to resolve them
The menu name does not match these instructions
Apple is using both Siri and Apple Intelligence & Siri, and the voice section may be called Talk to Siri, Talk & Type to Siri, or Requests. Open the Siri-related item in Settings and look for the equivalent control. Feature availability changes with device model, language, region, and operating-system version.
The one-word Siri option is missing
The one-word trigger depends on supported hardware, language, and region. Use Hey Siri where offered, or select Off and activate Siri with the side or top button. Type to Siri is another option on supported devices.
Siri still appears after voice activation is off
Turning off the voice trigger does not remove button activation or Type to Siri. Check Press Side Button for Siri on iPhone or the corresponding top-button setting on iPad, and review whether Type to Siri is enabled.
Siri works while the phone is locked
Voice activation and lock-screen access are separate. Return to the Siri settings page and turn off Allow Siri When Locked. If Siri appears after a button press, also check the button activation setting.
Suggestions keep appearing for an app
Open Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apps, select the app, and inspect every available learning and suggestion switch. Turn off Show in App, Show on Home Screen, Suggest App, and Suggestion Notifications as needed. These surfaces are controlled independently.
Personalization changes follow you to another device
Devices signed in to the same Apple Account can share encrypted Siri personalization. If you do not want those updates to continue, disable Siri in iCloud settings, then review each device’s local Siri, lock-screen, and app-suggestion controls.
