The Signal Contract for a 5-Minute TWAP Market: What P(up) Is Allowed to Mean

A signal for a five-minute, TWAP-settled binary market should answer one question: what is the probability that the official end-of-slot TWAP finishes above the frozen slot-open reference? It should not answer “is price going up?”, and it should not answer “should I buy?”. That is the contract proposed by the account ABROWNFOX001 in an article of the same name. This piece walks through that contract, what it permits and forbids, and what it does not prove.

What the signal is allowed to predict

In the author’s formulation, P(up) is the probability that the official TWAP at the end of the slot lands above the frozen opening reference. The target is the indicator Y = 1{TWAP_end > open_ref}. The article states that none of the following is the settlement target:

  • a general bullish impression,
  • the most recent exchange print,
  • the price of a prediction-market token,
  • a short EMA.

The same author warns against training on snapshot closes when the market settles on an average. A model fitted to the last tick answers a different question from one fitted to the averaged settlement value.

The central line is worth quoting exactly: “The signal answers fair probability. The engine answers whether the book is paying you to express it.” (ABROWNFOX001, The Signal Contract for a 5-Minute TWAP Market.) The page identifies an account, not a named person.

Check the market’s actual rules first

The title does not name a venue or contract, and the author’s rules are a proposed design, not universal rules. A secondary documentation result says some five-minute up/down markets use a Chainlink TWAP stream with a 30-second lookback. That detail was not confirmed against current official market rules, so treat it as a lead. Before building anything, confirm for your specific market:

  • the published resolution source,
  • the averaging window,
  • how the start reference is set,
  • how ties are treated.

If the averaging window is short relative to the slot, the last stretch of the slot matters most. If it covers the whole slot, early moves persist in the average. The target definition depends on which applies.

Inputs the signal may use

Input Role
Frozen opening reference The threshold the final TWAP is compared against
Latest official TWAP and its age Current state of the settlement measure, plus a staleness check
Elapsed seconds in the 300-second slot How much of the outcome is already locked in
Optional CEX lead-lag residual Information an exchange move carries that the TWAP has not yet absorbed
Previously accepted probability Used for decay between updates

Inputs it must not use

  • CLOB trades or one-sided book depth as settlement truth. They are market opinion, not the settlement measure.
  • Current unresolved PnL. It introduces hold bias.
  • Another wallet’s latest fill. Same reason.

When the right output is “don’t know”

The example output has four fields: probability, side (up, down or none), a trust flag, and a reason. The author treats side = none with trusted = false as a valid success state. The conditions that trigger it:

  • The CEX feed and the TWAP sharply disagree while the TWAP is stale. The answer is untrusted, not a forced directional call.
  • The signal joined the slot late. Do not invent an opening reference.
  • A reconnect gap occurred. Do not carry high confidence across it.

A signal that always emits a direction hides exactly the failures that cost money.

Time inside the slot changes what a probability means

The article argues that 58% at second 30 and 58% at second 270 are not the same statement, because more of the settlement window has already elapsed later on. Probabilities should therefore move as the world state changes, and decay toward the previously accepted value rather than jumping on every tick. The mapping from TWAP gap to probability is, according to the author, private. No calibration curve is published.

Keep the signal and the execution engine apart

The signal outputs fair probability. A separate engine decides whether the price on offer justifies a trade. The author’s example: a 53% estimate is unattractive against a 53-cent ask but could be attractive against a 47-cent ask. The proposed edge test compares the probability with the Up book price and requires:

Evaluating a signal against this contract

  1. Settlement relevance: does the target match the contract’s resolution condition and reference?
  2. Source freshness and trust handling: does it expose staleness and refuse to answer when feeds conflict?
  3. Elapsed time: does the output account for how much of the window has passed?
  4. Separation: is it free of book, PnL and inventory state?

What is not established

The article offers no auditable dataset, sample size, accuracy figure, return figure or calibration result. It describes public account activity as earlier buys, later sells and flat scratches, but that description is not evidence of performance. Treat the contract as a sound design discipline, not a proven edge.

Two background items are easy to conflate with it. A GitHub repository linked from the article describes a separate oracle implementation that accumulates TWAP values over time, finalizes separately and uses a 6-decimal fixed-point price scale. Nothing shows the signal uses it. And the Bank for International Settlements (2021) describes TWAP as an execution algorithm that slices a large order into evenly spaced child orders, with an illustrative USD 60 million USD/JPY order over 60 minutes. That is order execution, not oracle settlement, and it says nothing about five-minute markets.

The Bottom Line

Define the probability against the contract’s real settlement condition, refuse to answer when the data is stale or the opening reference is missing, and leave price and size decisions to a separate engine. Verify the market’s oracle, window and tie rule yourself, because nothing here shows the design is calibrated or profitable.
