The “Side-Eyeing Chloe” NFT sale is no longer upcoming: Chloe Clem’s family auctioned an NFT tied to the famous still image on September 24, 2021. It sold for 25 ETH, reported at roughly $74,000–$75,315 at the time, to Dubai-based music-production company 3F Music. The sale involved an image captured from the viral video—not the family’s entire video or every version of the meme online.
The video that created “Side-Eyeing Chloe”
In 2013, Katie Clem uploaded a video in which she surprised her daughters with news of a trip to Disneyland. Older sister Lily reacted with obvious excitement and emotion. Chloe, about two years old, looked sideways toward the camera with an expression viewers interpreted as skeptical, concerned or unimpressed.
That contrast—Lily celebrating while Chloe appeared uncertain—provided the instantly recognizable moment. Contemporary reports said the video had passed 20 million views by 2021 (Scroll.in; ABC News).
The expression became a reusable reaction image for doubt, discomfort, apprehension and disapproval. GIFs, captions, crops and reposts turned one frame into a meme that circulated separately from the original family video.

What was actually auctioned?
The auction was for an NFT associated with the meme’s source image—a still image or screengrab taken from the video. Decrypt described the file as a 660-by-371-pixel image (Decrypt), while another contemporary report likewise called it a screengrab (Crypto Times).
That distinction matters. The reported transaction did not mean that the buyer acquired the YouTube video, Chloe herself, the family’s complete online presence or automatic control over every captioned and modified version of the meme.
An NFT is a blockchain token linked to a digital asset or media file. It records the token’s creation and transfer, but token ownership is not automatically the same as copyright ownership. The available reports do not establish that 3F Music received unrestricted copyright, exclusive commercial licensing rights or control over all derivative memes.
When did the sale happen, and how much was it?
The headline’s future-tense wording came from coverage published just before the auction. The timeline was:

The durable transaction figure is 25 ETH. The dollar amounts are historical conversions, not a fixed current value: Ethereum’s price fluctuates, and the reports used different timing for their calculations (Decrypt; ABC News).
Why did Chloe’s family sell the NFT?
The auction arrived during the 2021 surge of meme-based NFT sales. Katie Clem reportedly became interested after seeing the NFT sale of “Disaster Girl.” Coverage presented the possible proceeds as money that could help with Chloe’s future education, including college costs, while also describing the auction as a family experience rather than only a financial transaction (The Independent; Utah Business).

The family reportedly planned to hold the Ethereum. Because cryptocurrency values can change sharply, the sale-day dollar estimate did not guarantee the same value later.

Contemporary reports identified the buyer as 3F Music, a Dubai-based music-production company known for collecting other high-profile meme NFTs (Decrypt; Roya News). That identification should be understood as reporting about the auction, not as proof that the company acquired every legal right associated with the image or video.
How the sale compares with other meme NFTs
News coverage placed the result alongside sales of “Disaster Girl,” Doge, Nyan Cat and “Charlie Bit My Finger.” Those examples reportedly fetched substantially more, making the roughly $74,000 Side-Eyeing Chloe result comparatively modest within the 2021 meme-NFT market (ABC News).
- Prices were highly speculative and tied to a fast-moving crypto market.
- Different auctions involved different assets, editions, rights and marketplace terms.
- A higher token price does not automatically indicate broader copyright ownership or greater cultural value.
What ownership did the buyer receive?
Four concepts are easy to confuse:
- The token: the blockchain record showing ownership of the NFT.
- The linked file: the digital image associated with that token, subject to how the listing stored or delivered it.
- Copyright: legal rights in the underlying photograph, video frame or other creative work.
- Permission: any contractual right to reproduce, sell, license or commercially use the image.
Owning the first item does not automatically confer the other three. People can continue to possess downloaded copies, screenshots and derivative meme versions even after an NFT changes hands. The published accounts confirm the auction and its image-based asset, but they do not provide the complete license terms needed to claim that 3F Music owns all commercial rights.
The child behind a permanent internet image
Chloe was a very young child when the video was recorded and when the image became famous. Her family handled the auction; there is no basis in the cited reports to describe her as independently negotiating the transaction or to speculate about her current views, finances or consent.
The episode illustrates why viral childhood footage is difficult to retract. A parent may control the original upload or auction listing, while copies, remixes and screenshots continue circulating beyond that control. If you publish the original video, verify that it remains available and that an embed is permitted. An NFT sale should not be treated as permission to republish the YouTube video or its still image elsewhere.
