Yes. Google’s Google Drive Help says that when you share a link to a file, your name and email are visible as the owner of that file. A link you created long ago keeps working until you change its access setting or remove it, so the fix is to find the file, read its current access level, and restrict it if the link is no longer needed.
What an old file link reveals
Google Drive Help states: “When you share a link to a file, your name and email will be visible as the owner of that file.” That statement is specific to Google Drive. It does not tell you how other services display owner details, so do not assume the same thing happens for a file stored elsewhere.

Google Drive offers three general access levels. Their practical differences matter more than their names:

Find the link you forgot
Google Drive
- Sign in with the Google account that owns the file. Only the owner or someone with permission to manage sharing can change these settings.
- Search for the file by name, or open the folder where you normally keep it.
- Right-click the file and choose Share, then select Share again. You can also select the file and use the sharing button.
- Read the General access line in the sharing dialog. If it says Anyone with the link or Public, the old link is still active.
OneDrive and SharePoint
- Sign in to OneDrive with the account that shared the item.
- Select Shared in the left navigation. This view lists items you shared and items shared with you, so look under the items you own.
- Select the item, then open Info > Manage access.
- Review every link entry listed there. Each one is a separate way into the file, and an item can carry more than one.
Stop the link without guessing
Google Drive: switch to Restricted
In the sharing dialog, open the General access menu and choose Restricted, then select Done. The old URL should stop opening the file for anyone who was not already given access. People you added by name keep their access, so review the people list as well.

OneDrive and SharePoint: choose the link type, then remove it
Microsoft distinguishes two link types, and the difference determines how you revoke access.

Removing one person may not remove the link
Dropbox’s documentation separates two actions that people often treat as the same thing: removing one recipient’s access, and turning off the shared link itself. If the URL remains active, anyone who still has it can use it again. Dropbox also warns that access can come from other routes, so check each of these:

- A direct grant to a specific person.
- Membership in a shared folder that contains the file.
- Membership in a team that has access.
- Ownership of the file or folder, which the owner cannot remove by changing a link.
These are Dropbox’s rules. Google and Microsoft have their own controls, and the same distinction may apply differently in their products, so confirm the state of each item after you change it.

A view-only setting does not control who can open the file
View-only limits what a recipient can change. It does not decide who can open the link. A “view-only” link with an Anyone or Public setting is still reachable by anyone holding the URL, so the access level is what needs checking first.
Confirm the change worked
- Reopen the sharing or Manage access panel and confirm the Google Drive level reads Restricted, or that the link is gone from the OneDrive list.
- Open the old URL in a private browser window while signed out. A request-access page or a denial means the link no longer opens the file for the public.
- If the file sits inside a shared folder, team site, or organization-managed library, changing the file’s own link may not be enough. The folder owner or an administrator must change the inherited or managed access.
- Organization administrators and account or plan settings can limit which controls you see. If an option is missing, ask your administrator rather than assuming the file is protected.
What the evidence does and does not establish
Google’s statement about visible owner details applies to Google Drive. Microsoft’s and Dropbox’s documentation describes their own link and permission controls. None of these sources establishes behavior that holds across all cloud storage providers. The control names and menu locations shown above can change with interface updates, so treat the labels as a guide and check the item in front of you. No published statistic on how often people forget shared links was found, so this article does not offer one.
