Start with privacy, ad preferences, playback interruptions, captions, and device updates—not picture tuning. These Roku settings can change what data is collected, whether long streams stop, and how accessible the menus and shows are. Menu names and availability vary by Roku model, software version, app, and country.
Limit sensitive banner ads and review viewing-data controls
Choose sensitive ad categories
On supported devices, open Settings > Privacy > Advertising > Sensitive ad content and select the categories you want to limit. Roku says these preferences apply to banner ads on Roku menus and screensavers, and to streaming devices associated with your Roku account. They are not a universal ad blocker: video ads, ads inside partner apps, and some ads shown to all users may not follow the preference. The control is available when Personalized Ads is enabled. Roku’s sensitive-ad guidance explains the limits.
Check Smart TV Experience and ACR
On Roku TVs where the option is available, go to Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience to review Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). Roku describes ACR as off by default in its guidance. Enabling it allows Roku to collect information about watched shows and movies. Turning it off later does not delete data collected or used while it was enabled, so treat the toggle as a setting for future collection, not a way to erase past data. Availability and wording can differ by TV and device generation. See Roku’s Smart TV Experience explanation.

Decide whether Bandwidth Saver suits your viewing
Roku’s Bandwidth Saver treats four hours without a command from the Roku remote or mobile app as inactivity. It then prompts you to continue; if you do nothing, playback stops and the device returns to Home. This can reduce data use when a stream is left running, but it may interrupt long background listening or unattended viewing.
- Open Settings > Network > Bandwidth saver to turn the feature off globally, if that option appears on your device.
- If you want the feature for most viewing but not one app, choose Don’t ask again for this app when the prompt appears, where offered.
The four-hour interval is Roku’s stated threshold; it is not an independently measured guarantee. Check Roku’s Bandwidth Saver instructions for device-specific details.

Set up captions and the screen reader where you need them
Captions: device setting first, app setting if needed
Roku caption controls are generally under Settings > Accessibility; some devices label the section Captions. Depending on the device, you may be able to choose captions always on, on replay, or on mute. Captions must be supplied with the program, and some apps use their own caption controls instead of Roku’s device setting. If a change has no effect, open the app’s playback controls and check there. Roku describes these differences in its caption guidance and accessibility settings information.
Screen reader: know the shortcut and its scope
Roku’s screen reader reads menus and other on-screen items aloud. On supported Roku TVs and players, press the remote’s Options button four times quickly to toggle it. Roku specifies current Roku TVs and players sold in the US and Canada with Roku OS 7.5 or later; that does not establish identical support on every older or international model. The shortcut and availability are described in Roku’s accessibility support page.

Keep software current and check the connection if playback falters
Update and restart before changing several settings
Roku says its devices check for software updates at startup and every 24–36 hours, with updates usually installing automatically. If an update fails or the device behaves unexpectedly, confirm it is connected to the network and that internet access works, then restart the Roku and router and run a manual update check. Roku’s update troubleshooting steps are at its software-update support page.
Use connection figures as guidance, not guarantees
Roku Support UK lists typical download speeds of 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K UHD. These are indicative thresholds, not a promise of smooth playback: Roku notes that a connection rated “Good” can still stutter when other devices use bandwidth, and individual apps may set their own requirements. These figures are from Roku’s UK guidance, not a universal regional specification. See Roku Support UK’s connection guidance.

If Wi-Fi troubleshooting does not resolve a connection problem, a wired connection is an option only if your Roku player or TV has an Ethernet port. Roku also recommends checking for updates, restarting, and reviewing Wi-Fi conditions; ordinary settings changes do not require buying a cable. See Roku’s network troubleshooting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider refresh-rate matching only if you notice a specific display issue
This is an optional display behavior, not a required first setting. Roku says current-generation players output at 60 fps by default. On compatible players, Auto-adjust display refresh rate can switch output to match a title’s native format. Some apps do not support it, and the TV may briefly flash black during a mode change. Consider it if you notice motion judder or a flash when playback starts, but weigh that against the mode-change behavior. The 60 fps figure and caveats come from Roku’s refresh-rate guidance.
