When The Roku Channel fails, first determine whether the problem affects one title, the whole app, your internet connection, or the Roku device. Play a different title, open another app, run Roku’s network test, and try a second network before making disruptive changes. Those tests identify the correct fix faster than repeatedly restarting the same screen.
Start with a controlled diagnosis
Use the following sequence and note exactly where playback fails. Roku recommends trying another title when one movie or show will not play; that comparison separates a title-level problem from an app-wide failure. Fix buffering and stalled playback
1. Run Roku’s connection test
On the Roku home screen, open Settings > Network > About, verify the listed Wi-Fi connection, and select Check connection. An unstable connection can allow menus to load while video repeatedly pauses. If the test reports a weak or failed connection, correct the wireless link before changing the channel.
After the test succeeds, start a title and watch whether the symptom changes. A stable result does not guarantee that your broadband service is uncongested, so continue to the traffic and second-network tests if buffering persists.
2. Restart the connection in the correct order
Unplug the modem, router, and Roku for about 15 seconds. Reconnect the modem first, the router second, and the Roku last. Wait for each device to finish starting before powering the next one. This sequence renews the network path without erasing Roku settings or installed channels.
Some Roku models also provide an on-device restart at Settings > System > Power > System restart. Use that menu when it is present. A restart is reversible; it does not remove accounts or subscriptions.
3. Reduce competing traffic
Pause downloads and video streams, or temporarily disconnect other streaming players, computers, game consoles, and phones using the same connection. Congestion can make a fast broadband plan behave poorly for a television stream. Test The Roku Channel again after the other traffic stops. If playback improves, schedule large downloads outside viewing time or move high-bandwidth devices to another connection.
4. Improve the wireless link
Move the Roku or router to reduce walls, cabinets, and other obstructions. Check the signal information shown under Settings > Network. Roku’s Wi-Fi guidance, updated September 9, 2026, notes that some models cannot use 5 GHz DFS channels 50–64 or 100–144. If the Roku cannot see a 5 GHz network, configure the router to use channels 36–48 or 149–165 instead, where supported by the router and local regulations.
Do not assume that 5 GHz is always better. It can provide more capacity at short range, while 2.4 GHz may travel farther through walls. Test the band that gives the Roku the steadier connection, not merely the higher link-rate figure shown by the router.

Connect the Roku by Ethernet only if the exact Roku model has an Ethernet port or supports a compatible adapter. Wired playback is a diagnostic comparison: if it works while Wi-Fi buffers, the wireless path is the problem. Ethernet is not available on every Roku model, and an incompatible adapter will not add support.

Alternatively, connect temporarily to a phone hotspot or another Wi-Fi network. If The Roku Channel plays there, focus on the home router, wireless interference, or broadband service. Hotspot data can be metered, so use it for a short test rather than as a permanent streaming connection.
6. Update or reinstall The Roku Channel
Highlight The Roku Channel on the Roku home screen, press the Star (*) button on the remote, and choose Check for Updates. Install any available update, reopen the channel, and test more than one title.
If the updated channel still buffers or will not open, remove it and install it again. Roku notes that a channel associated with an active Roku-billed subscription may not be removable until that subscription is handled. Check the billing arrangement before attempting removal so you do not create an avoidable account problem.

Fix playback errors, black screens, and crashes
When only one title shows an error
Return to the title comparison first. Search for another movie or episode in The Roku Channel and play it. If alternatives work, the failed title may be temporarily unavailable, restricted by rights, or affected by a provider-side error. Reinstalling the entire Roku system will not restore a title that the provider is not serving.
When the whole channel opens to a black screen
Open another app immediately. If other apps display normally, highlight The Roku Channel, press Star, select Check for Updates, and then test again. A remove-and-reinstall cycle is the next supported app-level repair when updating does not help.
If every app is black, frozen, or slow, return to Settings > Network > About and run Check connection. Restart the modem, router, and Roku in that order. A black screen caused by a failed network session can clear after the restart; a black screen in every app indicates a broader device or connection issue.
When the channel repeatedly crashes
Use the same update and reinstall path, then test with a second title. Keep the device connected to a stable network while the channel is being installed. If the app works on another network but crashes on the home network, do not factory-reset the Roku; investigate the home connection first.

Buffering usually points to the path between the Roku and the service, while a missing movie points to catalog rights or payment. A black screen in only The Roku Channel is more consistent with channel software or a provider interruption; a black screen in every app requires network or device checks. Treat these as working hypotheses, not guarantees, and confirm them with the comparison tests.

Find movies and shows that seem to be missing
A missing title is often a rights or catalog change rather than a defective Roku. Possible reasons include:
- The title is not licensed in your current country or territory.
- The title is available through a different app.
- Viewing requires a rental, purchase, or subscription.
- The provider removed the title from its catalog.
- The channel provider removed the channel, or Roku removed it under its terms.
Search broadly, then inspect the viewing option
- Search on the Roku device or at TheRokuChannel.com.
- Search by title first. If the title is difficult to find, try the actor, director, genre, or app name; Roku Search supports each of those categories.
- Open the result and read the listed viewing option. It may identify another app, a payment requirement, or a subscription requirement instead of a free play button.
- If the result is absent, repeat the search with the device account and location you actually use. Roku says search partners vary by region, so results are not identical everywhere.
Check regional availability
Roku documents The Roku Channel’s availability by geography and platform:

Traveling, changing the country associated with an account, or using a device configured for another market can therefore change both the channel’s availability and its catalog. A movie visible in one country may be absent, offered by another app, or require payment in another.
Do not treat live-channel counts as a fixed catalog guarantee
Roku support pages in 2026 describe the service with marketing counts of more than 500 live channels and, on another current support reference, more than 350 live TV channels. These figures are promotional, can change, and do not guarantee that a particular channel or movie will be present in your region. Rights holders can add or remove programming independently of the advertised total.
Check account, billing, and platform details before deleting anything
If a search result shows a rental, purchase, or subscription option, the title is not necessarily missing. Read the offer attached to the result and confirm which account is signed in before paying. A title can also appear on the web or mobile version of the service while not being available on a particular Roku device or in a particular country.
Removing the channel is not a billing fix. Roku specifically warns that an active Roku-billed subscription may prevent removal until that subscription is handled. Record the billing arrangement first, and do not assume that reinstalling changes the subscription, rights, or catalog. The same caution applies when traveling: changing networks does not change licensing territory.
Consider accessory and replacement choices carefully
An Ethernet cable or compatible adapter is useful only when the exact Roku model supports Ethernet. It is a diagnostic option, not a universal upgrade. A router or mesh Wi-Fi change can make sense when several devices have weak wireless service, but first verify that a hotspot or wired comparison actually points to the home network. No fixed accessory price or replacement cost applies to every model, so verify compatibility and current terms before buying.

- Repeating a restart without changing the test. Restart once, then compare another title, another app, or another network so the result provides new information.
- Calling a single failed title an outage. Roku’s own comparison is to try other titles from the same app.

Roku lists a factory reset as a last resort because it erases device settings and requires you to set up the apps again. Do not use it to solve a title that is missing for licensing, payment, or regional reasons. Before choosing it, confirm that multiple apps fail, the connection is stable on more than one network when possible, and updating or reinstalling The Roku Channel made no difference.
A replacement Roku is reasonable only after supported troubleshooting fails and the problem follows the device rather than the home network.
