The Reborn Planet: Astronomers Find a Candidate World Linked to a Dead Star’s Remains

Astronomers have found evidence consistent with a planet candidate around the young white dwarf HS 0209+0832, possibly formed from material expelled when its star entered a giant phase. The case rests on an unusual mix of elements accreting onto the white dwarf and a repeating brightness signal detected by NASA’s TESS satellite. Neither clue directly shows a planet forming, and the signal has more than one possible explanation.

What astronomers found

In a paper published in Nature Astronomy on 5 October 2026, Jamie T. Williams, Boris T. Gänsicke and colleagues report evidence for a candidate second-generation planet associated with the white dwarf HS 0209+0832. A white dwarf is the compact stellar remnant left after a star like the Sun has exhausted its nuclear fuel and shed its outer layers.

The team reanalysed ultraviolet spectra of the white dwarf and identified copper and niobium in previously unidentified spectral features. The composition of material falling onto the star differs from familiar Solar System planetary material: it is enriched in trans-iron elements such as zinc, copper and niobium, while the measured accreting material is depleted in or lacks the usual rocky-element signatures of silicon and iron. The reported niobium abundance relative to calcium is more than three orders of magnitude above the corresponding solar relative abundance.

The authors interpret the unusual chemistry, including the strong enrichment in elements produced by the slow neutron-capture process (the s-process), as consistent with material originating in the progenitor star’s expelled giant-phase envelope. They also point to helium and the absence of a typical rocky-element signature as supporting accretion from an evaporating gaseous object. These are composition-based inferences about the material reaching the white dwarf, not a direct observation of a planet or its formation. Read the study in Nature Astronomy.

How a planet might form from a star’s expelled material

As a star approaches the end of its life, it can swell into a giant and lose material. The researchers propose that some of this expelled matter may have remained bound to the system in a circumstellar disk, rather than escaping into space. If enough material gathered in that disk, it could have formed a new planet: a second-generation world, born after the original star’s giant phase.

The European Research Council’s account describes a possible role for a companion star: its gravity may have pulled some of the expelled material back into orbit. That is a proposed explanation for how a disk could form, not an observed event in this system. Astronomers have not watched the candidate assemble; the formation route is inferred from the chemistry and the system’s observations. The European Research Council summarizes the proposed scenario.

If a close-in gaseous planet formed from retained material, it could now be intensely irradiated by the hot white dwarf. The study’s interpretation is that the object may be losing atmospheric gas, some of which then falls onto the white dwarf and alters the chemical signature observed in its atmosphere.

What the TESS brightness signal does—and does not—show

TESS data show a sinusoidal brightness variation with a period of 4.399 ± 0.026 days and an amplitude of 0.120% ± 0.018%. The study considers two interpretations:

  • 114MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 4.5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
  • A planet’s thermal phase curve: The white dwarf heats the planet’s dayside more than its nightside. As the planet orbits, the changing view of its warmer and cooler hemispheres could produce a repeating brightness pattern. This would be consistent with a close-in planet candidate.
  • A transiting cometary tail: Material escaping from an evaporating giant-planet candidate could form a tail that periodically crosses the star’s line of sight, changing the observed brightness. This would also fit an evaporating object, but the signal would be associated with the tail rather than simply the planet’s changing day–night emission.

The reported periodicity strengthens the case for a close-in evaporating giant-planet candidate, but it does not by itself establish that a planet is present. The study does not establish which of the two explanations is more likely.

Is this the first planet found around a dead star?

No. NASA’s historical account credits Aleksander Wolszczan’s 1992 discovery of three planets orbiting PSR B1257+12, a pulsar. A pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star, a different kind of stellar remnant from a white dwarf. The distinction in the 2026 report is its proposed second-generation origin around a white dwarf—not the discovery of the first planet around any kind of dead stellar remnant. What remains uncertain

  • The planet has not been directly imaged. The evidence comes from the chemistry of accreted material and the TESS brightness variation.
  • The brightness variation has competing explanations. A thermal day–night cycle and a transiting cometary tail are both considered; the available findings do not rank them.
  • The proposed birth process is an interpretation. The chemistry is consistent with a second-generation origin, but neither a planet-forming disk nor the act of planet formation was directly observed.
  • One candidate does not establish how common these worlds are. The reported findings provide no population-wide incidence rate for second-generation planets.
