An AI builder or no-code platform may keep the initial cash outlay close to a subscription, while a custom development project can cost tens of thousands of dollars or more. Those figures are not prices for the same product: scope, integrations, backend work, delivery, and ongoing maintenance change the total. To compare routes fairly, price the same requirements and count the work and expenses that continue after launch.
What the available 2026 cost figures actually show
The published figures below are useful reference points, not a like-for-like SaaS price comparison. Clutch reports data from reviewed software and mobile-app projects; Bubble and Lovable publish vendor estimates. None establishes the total cost of building an identical SaaS through all three routes.

| Route or reference | Published cost figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| AI app builder | $0 available at entry level; estimated $0–$50 per month | Lovable’s 2026 vendor-published estimate. It is not a complete launch or ownership cost. |
| Traditional development, vendor estimate | $5,000–$300,000 or more | Bubble’s guide, published August 17, 2026, gives this broad range for traditional development. It says cost depends on complexity, platform, and team location; it is vendor-authored guidance, not neutral measurement. |
| Dev-shop route, vendor estimate | $60,000–$300,000 | Lovable’s 2026 estimate for a dev-shop route; not an independently controlled comparison with its builder estimate. |
| Reviewed software-development projects | $10,000–$49,000 typical range; $132,480.29 average project cost; $24–$49 typical hourly rates; about 13 months average timeline | Clutch’s Software Development Company Pricing Guide, updated September 21, 2026, based on reviewed projects. These are not SaaS-only figures, and the average is not a quote for a typical SaaS MVP. |
| Reviewed mobile-app projects | $10,000–$49,999 typical range; $90,780.11 average project cost; $25–$49 hourly rates; about 11 months average timeline | Clutch’s Mobile App Pricing Guide, updated September 21, 2026. This is adjacent evidence about custom software work, not a SaaS benchmark. |
The apparent gap between a monthly builder estimate and a custom-project budget does not establish a savings percentage. The estimates do not normalize scope, integrations, usage, hosting, production hardening, maintenance, or the founder’s own labor. Treat each number according to its source and what it covers.
How the three build routes differ in cost
AI builders
An AI builder can reduce the cash needed to begin by letting a founder generate and shape an application through a platform rather than commissioning a full custom build upfront. Lovable’s 2026 guide estimates an entry-level option at $0 and a $0–$50 monthly range. Those figures describe the builder-cost estimate, not the complete cost of launching a dependable SaaS. The available estimate does not break out usage, integrations, production hardening, ongoing support, or the time required to validate and maintain the result.
Traditional no-code
No specific traditional no-code subscription or total SaaS cost is established by the cited figures. Bubble’s guide is useful for its broad range for traditional development, but that range should not be relabeled as a no-code price. For a no-code quote, identify platform charges and any separate costs for usage, integrations, hosting, support, and specialist help instead of assuming the subscription is the whole budget.
Dev shops
A dev shop prices people’s time and delivery against a defined scope. Clutch’s review-based software-project data provides context for that route, but it covers software projects generally rather than SaaS products alone. Clutch’s 2026 guide reports an average software-development project cost of $132,480.29 and an average timeline of about 13 months; neither figure should be treated as a standard SaaS quote. Lovable’s $60,000–$300,000 dev-shop estimate is a separate vendor-published range, not a matching quote for the Clutch projects.

What drives the price of a SaaS build
Clutch’s March 2026 interviews with representatives from more than 15 development companies identified platform count, feature complexity and novelty, backend infrastructure and APIs, and visual customization as frequently cited cost variables. Its mobile-app guide also emphasizes features and functionality, UX complexity, and backend work. These factors can raise costs whichever route you choose: a builder may make implementation easier, but it does not remove the need to define, connect, secure, and maintain the product.
Recommended Free Tools
- Platforms: Decide whether the product must support web, mobile, or both, and identify any distinct versions or interfaces.
- Features and workflows: List user roles, permissions, core actions, and unusual or complex business rules.
- Backend and integrations: Identify APIs, data storage, billing, notifications, and other services the product depends on.
- UX and visual customization: Specify required screens, interaction complexity, and how far the design must depart from standard components.
- Security and compliance: State the actual requirements in the brief so each provider can price the necessary work.
- Operations after launch: Include hosting, usage, support, maintenance, iteration, and any migration or handoff work.
Clutch’s 2026 mobile-app guide puts the point this way: “The biggest factors that will influence the overall cost of your app development project are features and functionalities, the complexity of the UX design, and the backend development process.” That statement concerns app-development projects, not a SaaS-specific cost study.

How to compare quotes and platform estimates fairly
- Write one shared scope. Describe the same users, roles, platforms, workflows, integrations, and security or compliance needs for every route.
- Separate initial build cost from release timing. Ask what cash is due to reach a usable release and how long that release is expected to take. Do not treat a project timeline as a measure of cost by itself.
- Break out what is included. Ask whether backend work, hosting, usage, integrations, support, and production hardening are included or separately billed.
- Estimate continuing work. Include maintenance, fixes, product iteration, and the effort to migrate or hand off the application if the chosen route no longer fits.
- Count internal labor. Record the founder or team skills and hours needed for requirements, configuration, testing, launch, and ongoing operation.
- Compare the resulting totals, not the headline prices. A subscription, hourly rate, vendor estimate, and reviewed project average measure different things; keep their source, scope, and time period attached.
Which route makes sense for your project?
An AI builder is worth evaluating when a low initial cash outlay and a fast way to shape an early product matter, provided you account for the work and costs beyond the builder estimate. Traditional no-code is a separate option, but the figures here do not establish a typical no-code price; request a quote or calculate the platform and operating costs against your actual scope. A dev shop is the clearest route when you need a defined custom delivery and can specify the requirements, but broad industry figures cannot substitute for a scoped proposal.
Before choosing, ask each provider or platform to map its estimate to the same requirements. If a cost or timeline is not tied to those requirements, treat it as directional rather than as your SaaS budget.
