The Real Cost of an Ecommerce Platform for 5–10 SKUs

A 5–10-SKU catalog does not, by itself, determine what an ecommerce platform will cost. The meaningful estimate combines the recurring plan fee with payment processing, possible charges for using an outside payment provider, sales thresholds, hosting, and the features the store actually needs. Current vendor pricing pages disclose those pieces, but not a comparable all-in total for a store of this size.

Why SKU count does not predict the bill

SKU count describes how many distinct products or variations you list; it is not a reliable proxy for sales volume, order count, payment mix, or the services required to run a store. Shopify’s pricing page lists unlimited product listings on its plans and does not show a price premium for moving from five products to ten. The pricing information reviewed for BigCommerce and WooCommerce likewise points to plan terms, payment activity, and hosting choices—not catalog size—as the factors to examine. Two stores with the same number of products can have very different bills: one may process many small orders, while another makes fewer large sales; they may also use different payment providers, countries, plans, or add-ons. Without those inputs, a single monthly total—or a universal claim about the cheapest platform—would be misleading.

What the listed platform costs show

The figures below are vendor-listed US-dollar prices and terms on the cited pages reviewed for this comparison. They are components, not equivalent all-in quotes. Confirm current pricing, eligibility, and terms for your country before choosing a plan.

Platform Recurring platform fee Payment-related charges shown Other cost point to check
Shopify Basic is $39 USD per month with monthly billing, or $29 USD per month when paid yearly, according to its pricing page. Listed standard online card rates: Basic, 2.9% + $0.30; Grow, 2.7% + $0.30; Advanced, 2.5% + $0.30. Listed third-party transaction fees: 2%, 1%, and 0.6%, respectively. International rates add 1%, as stated on the page. Card-processing rates and third-party transaction fees have different bases. Do not simply add them without checking the provider and transaction details that apply to your store. Source: Shopify pricing.
BigCommerce The reviewed official page describes plans and annual-sales terms; it does not establish a single comparable monthly total for this scenario. Card processing begins at 2.89% + $0.29 per transaction, as stated on the page. Annual sales are calculated on a trailing-12-month basis using “GMV (gross order value minus 10%).” Published plan rates can have eligibility requirements; one stated condition is that the business be US-based. Verify the live quote and the selected plan’s threshold. Source: BigCommerce pricing.
WooCommerce The official comparison lists a $0 platform fee. You choose a host. WooPayments processing is listed at approximately 2.50–2.90% + $0.30 per transaction. The page says there is no additional fee for using a third-party payment solution. The $0 platform fee does not include hosting or other capabilities the store needs. Add those to any estimate. How to build an honest estimate

Use a worksheet rather than starting from the SKU count. Keep recurring fees separate from variable charges so you can see which assumptions drive the result.

  1. Choose the country, platform, plan, and billing cadence. Record whether the quoted subscription is monthly or conditional on annual payment, and check regional availability and eligibility.
  2. Estimate monthly payment activity. Enter expected gross merchandise value (GMV), average order value or monthly order count, and the share of domestic versus international orders and card payments.
  3. Apply the actual payment terms. Calculate percentage and fixed per-transaction processing charges using the processor and transaction mix you expect. If using an external processor, check whether the platform adds a separate transaction fee. Do not treat that fee as interchangeable with card processing.
  4. Check sales thresholds and plan changes. For BigCommerce, use the vendor’s stated trailing-12-month GMV basis and verify the relevant threshold and eligibility against a live quote.
  5. Add the services needed to operate the store. Include hosting for WooCommerce, plus any required features or add-ons. Account separately for fulfillment, shipping, domain registration, taxes, chargebacks, and implementation or support labor when they apply; the cited platform pages do not establish comparable amounts for these items.
  6. Show assumptions next to the result. State whether amounts recur, the billing period, geography, plan, payment provider, and order mix. If any of those inputs are unknown, show a range or leave the total uncalculated rather than inventing a representative bill.

A useful cost model is: total operating estimate = recurring platform or hosting charges + transaction-based processing + any external-provider platform fee + required add-ons and other store-specific costs. This is a checklist formula, not a price quote; the variable amounts require your own sales and operating assumptions.

Which cost drivers matter most?

  • Plan billing cadence: Monthly billing and a price conditional on yearly payment are not the same commitment or cash-flow pattern.
  • Order value and volume: Percentage charges depend on the payment amount, while fixed per-order charges make order count relevant too.
  • Payment provider and geography: The processor, card mix, and international transactions can change the applicable charges.
  • Thresholds and eligibility: A low entry price may not describe the plan or rate that applies as sales grow.
  • Required capabilities: Include only the apps, features, and services your specific store needs; their costs cannot be inferred from SKU count.
  • Administration and technical effort: These affect the practical cost of operating a store, but the cited pages do not quantify staffing or implementation labor for a 5–10-SKU business.

What a small catalog can—and cannot—tell you

A five-to-ten-product store may have a compact catalog, but that fact alone does not establish its platform bill, sales, order count, or required infrastructure. To compare options fairly, first define your country, plan and billing cadence, monthly GMV, average order value or order count, payment mix, processor, fulfillment and shipping setup, required features, hosting arrangement, and labor assumptions. Then compare the same assumptions across current vendor terms.
