Search “DUI lawyer near me” from one neighborhood, then repeat it from another, and the local firms shown may change. That location-by-location variation is part of the competition: Google’s local results respond to the searcher’s context, the service requested, and what Google considers relevant and prominent—not to one fixed national ranking for every lawyer.
Why “lawyer near me” results change from place to place
“Near me” is a cue about the search context, not a magic phrase that makes a business nearby. Google describes distance in relation to the customer searching; when it does not have the customer’s location, it uses what it knows about that location. Two people making a similar search from different places can therefore see different local firms.

The requested service matters, too. Someone searching “personal injury lawyer near me” is asking for a different kind of match than someone searching for a DUI lawyer. Treating every search containing “lawyer” as interchangeable misses that distinction. Simply inserting “near me” into a firm’s page title does not change its physical distance from the searcher or guarantee that it will appear.

Google Business Profile Help says: “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” In its explanation, Google discusses prominence. These are useful categories for understanding local results, not a disclosed formula: Google says the details of its ranking algorithm are confidential, and it does not publish exact weights for the factors.

Relevance: does the business match the search?
Google describes relevance as how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Complete, detailed business information can help Google understand what a business offers. For a legal search, the practice area named in the query is part of the match a searcher wants; a generic lawyer listing may not answer the same need as a firm clearly identified with the requested service.
Distance: how close is the business to the searcher?
Distance is tied to the person making the search, not simply to a firm’s preferred service area or the words on its website. This is why a single search from a firm’s office cannot represent what every potential client nearby—or farther away—will see.

Prominence: how well known is the business?
Google uses prominence to describe how well-known a business is. It says information such as links across the web and reviews may contribute, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Google does not specify a review count, rating, or other threshold that guarantees a position, so prominence should not be treated as a score a firm can calculate or buy.

What a law firm can control—and what it cannot
A firm can improve the accuracy and completeness of the information it provides, but it cannot request or pay Google for a better organic local position. As Google Business Profile Help puts it: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” Profile work may make the business easier to understand and eligible to appear for relevant searches; it is not a promise of a particular placement.

Keep the Business Profile complete and accurate
Google recommends verifying a Business Profile and keeping its information current and accurate. Relevant details can include the address customers can visit, hours, business category, and other applicable attributes. Google says complete and accurate business information makes a business more likely to show for relevant local searches; that is general guidance, not a ranking guarantee for a law firm.
Represent the office and service area honestly
Google requires businesses to represent themselves accurately and to keep an address or service area precise. A genuine, staffed office is different from a misleading address created to suggest a presence somewhere the firm does not have. Fake offices and location tricks are not legitimate ways to compete under Google’s representation rules.

Build reputation without manipulating reviews
Reviews can be among the signals Google considers, but firms must not buy, incentivize, or otherwise manipulate them. The practical distinction is between earning authentic feedback and attempting to manufacture it. Google’s guidance does not establish a number of reviews that secures a local result.

How to assess local visibility across a service area
A firm that checks its visibility only once, from its own office, gets one observation—not a map of what searchers across its service area see. A law-firm marketing practitioner describes visibility changing between search locations and recommends checking a grid of points. Examples of tools for this kind of observation include Local Falcon, BrightLocal, and Semrush Map Rank Tracker. That is practitioner guidance, not Google policy or proof that one tool is best.

- Choose locations that reflect the real service area. Compare multiple points rather than relying on a search made only at the office.
- Compare the practice-area searches that matter. A grid for “DUI lawyer near me” answers a different visibility question from one for “personal injury lawyer near me.”
- Keep organic local results separate from paid placements. A local result and a Local Services Ad do not represent the same kind of visibility.
- Read the output as search visibility, not business performance. A grid can show where a firm is observed in search results; it does not by itself measure calls, leads, retained clients, or revenue.
Local Services Ads are paid placement, not organic ranking
Google Local Services Ads are a separate advertising route for eligible providers. Screening requirements vary by service category, country, and whether a provider advertises directly or through a partner affiliate. Depending on category and region, direct advertisers may face checks involving licenses, insurance, or background screening; some categories may require advanced verification.
Google says Local Services Ads are ordered through an auction that considers bids and overall profile quality, among other factors. Its listed considerations include search context, responsiveness, service relevance, ratings and reviews, response time, images, and verification checks. That is more nuanced than saying the highest bidder always wins. It also does not change the organic local ranking: an ad is paid placement with separate eligibility and ordering mechanics.
What the competition means for searchers
A local result is a context-dependent shortlist, not a universal verdict on which lawyer is best. A firm’s visibility can differ by the searcher’s location, the practice area in the query, and the distinction between organic results and ads. Google’s published framework explains the broad categories involved, but it does not disclose a precise formula, and a prominent position is not proof of legal quality or a particular outcome.
