The Psychology Behind the Smile: Why Receiving Gifts Can Make Us Happy

Receiving a gift often brings a real, short-lived lift in mood. The strongest explanation in the studies is social: a gift tells you that someone noticed you, remembered something about you, or chose to act on your behalf, and that message appears to carry much of the pleasure. The effect is not automatic, though. It depends on how well the gift fits you, whether it comes with a sense of obligation, and the setting in which it was studied.

What the studies actually measured

The findings below come from a small set of published studies, each with a specific population and setting. The table lists them so you can see how far each result reaches.

Howe et al., Journal of Consumer Psychology 2025 Seven studies, including an in-person study of real gifting Receiving a small material gift, such as candy or flowers, improved recipients’ affect more than a supportive conversation with a close other Describes the studied context only; no universal effect is established
Balconi, Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Published 28 January 2020 32 participants in friend pairs After gift exchange, participants showed improved accuracy and shorter response times on a cooperative task Does not establish that every recipient became happier
Oishi et al. 2025 Two studies of thank-you gifts following a costly favor Indebtedness predicted willingness to give a thank-you gift when considered alongside fondness, respect, and gratitude Results apply to the scenarios studied
Galak, Givi, and Williams, Current Directions in Psychological Science 2016 Review article Givers and recipients tend to judge gifts by different moments A proposed explanation drawn from the literature, not a single experiment
Chan and Mogilner Holmes 2016 Study comparing experiential and material gifts Recipients of experiential gifts reported stronger relationship closeness, even when the giver did not attend One finding; not a ranking of gift types
“The Gift of Psychological Closeness” 2018 Study holding gift features constant Recipients told the giver focused on practicality or ease of use felt closer to the giver Sample size not stated in the cited summary
“The Smile-Seeking Hypothesis” 2018 Study on immediate affective reactions Givers’ immediate reactions motivate and reward gift giving Focuses on the giver’s side, not the recipient’s experience

Why a gift can feel like being noticed

A gift works partly as a signal. Choosing something for another person requires attention, and receiving it tells you that you were in someone’s thoughts. A 2018 study on psychological distance found that recipients who were told the giver had focused on practicality or ease of use felt closer to that giver than recipients given a different framing. The gifts were otherwise identical, so the difference lay in what the recipient understood about the giver’s attention.

This points to a simple reading of why a gift lands. The object matters less than the inference it supports: this person knew what would help me, or thought about me while choosing.

A quick lift in mood

The strongest mood evidence comes from Howe and colleagues, whose 2025 Journal of Consumer Psychology article reports seven studies, including an in-person study of real gifting. In that work, receiving small material gifts such as candy or flowers improved recipients’ affect more than a supportive conversation with a close other did. This is a direct comparison, which makes it notable, but it was conducted in a specific context with specific participants. It does not show that gifts outperform conversation in general, or that every gift will improve every person’s mood.

Gift exchange and cooperation

Gifts may also affect how people work together. Balconi’s study, published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience on 28 January 2020, involved 32 people in friend pairs. After gift exchange, participants showed improved accuracy and shorter response times on a cooperative task. The finding suggests that a gift can shape social behavior, not only mood. It does not show that each recipient felt happier, and a sample of 32 cannot describe how common the effect is.

Gratitude and obligation are different feelings

Receiving a gift can feel good and still create a sense of debt. In two studies by Oishi and colleagues published in 2025 on thank-you gifts after a costly favor, indebtedness predicted willingness to give a thank-you gift, even when fondness, respect, and gratitude were considered alongside it. The pattern shows that gratitude and indebtedness are distinct. A recipient may feel warmly toward a giver and still feel pressure to reciprocate.

That distinction is useful for interpreting your own reaction. Pleasure at being thought of and pressure to repay can arrive together, and the second can dampen the first. The studies describe this pattern in specific scenarios; they do not measure how often it happens in everyday gift exchange.

Why givers and recipients judge gifts differently

Galak, Givi, and Williams argue in their 2016 review in Current Directions in Psychological Science that the two sides of a gift focus on different moments. Givers tend to focus on the exchange itself and the recipient’s reaction. Recipients tend to focus on value after they own the gift. The 2018 “Smile-Seeking Hypothesis” study adds that givers’ immediate reactions help motivate and reward gift giving.

The mismatch is practical:

  • A gift chosen for its reveal, such as a surprising box or an unusual object, may produce a strong first reaction but little use afterward.
  • A more practical gift may matter more to the recipient over weeks, even though it is less exciting to give.

Experiences and objects

Chan and Mogilner Holmes, in a 2016 study titled “Experiential Gifts Foster Stronger Social Relationships than Material Gifts,” reported that recipients of experiential gifts showed increased relationship closeness compared with recipients of material gifts. This held even when the giver did not attend the experience. It is one finding, and it should not be read as proof that material gifts are inferior. Whether an experience is shared, and whether the recipient would have chosen it independently, are variables the studies suggest may matter.

What the evidence does not show

Several claims are often made about gifts that the current studies do not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No prevalence figure. No population-level statistic estimates what percentage of people feel happy when they receive a gift. The sample sizes above describe studies, not how common any reaction is.
  • No brain-level claim for recipients. The American Psychological Association’s 2022 explainer “What happens in your brain when you give a gift?” focuses mostly on giving and giver reward. It does not establish a specific brain response in the person receiving a gift, and it does not show that receiving releases oxytocin. Its quote from Emiliana Simon-Thomas, PhD, science director at the Greater Good Science Center, describes the “warm glow” of giving: “Oftentimes, people refer to it as the ‘warm glow,’ this intrinsic delight in doing something for someone else.” The quote concerns the giver.
  • No verdict on giving versus receiving. The studies cover different activities and outcomes, so they do not settle whether giving is better than receiving. Related support research, such as Inagaki and Eisenberger’s 2016 work on giving and receiving social support with 36 participants, examines social support rather than gifts, and should not be read as gift evidence.
  • No universal effect. Each result is tied to a sample, scenario, or context. A gift that lifts one person’s mood may leave another person indifferent or uneasy.

The honest summary is that receiving a gift can bring pleasure, a sense of being noticed, and sometimes closeness, while obligation and poor fit can complicate the reaction.
