Noise-cancelling headphones can make steady background noise—such as an aircraft cabin hum—less intrusive, and they may help you avoid turning up music to compete with it. They are less effective against changing sounds like voices and traffic, can make you less aware of your surroundings, and are not a substitute for rated hearing protection in hazardous noise.

What noise cancelling does—and what it does not do

Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses electronics to create sound intended to counter ambient sound. Passive isolation works differently: the headphone seal or ear cups physically block some sound. Many headphones use both approaches, but neither makes the wearer’s environment silent. ANC generally works best against steady, predictable noise, such as aircraft engine sound; changing sounds—including conversation, traffic, squeaks, and bangs—are harder to cancel and may remain audible. A University of Colorado interview with audiologist Cory Portnuff, published July 10, 2025, discusses these limits.

Potential benefits of noise-cancelling headphones

Less intrusive steady background noise

ANC can make continuous sounds less noticeable, which may make a flight, commute, or noisy workspace feel more comfortable. How much it helps depends on the sound, the headphones, their fit, and personal preference. No particular model or cancellation level is established here.

They may help you keep playback volume lower

When surrounding noise is less intrusive, you may feel less need to raise music or other audio to hear it. The World Health Organization recommends well-fitted noise-cancelling headphones in noisy settings for this reason. That is a potential listening-behavior benefit, not proof that a given pair prevents hearing loss.

Drawbacks and limits to consider

Changing sounds can still get through

ANC is better suited to steady, predictable noise than to sounds that start, stop, or change rapidly. If your main concern is conversation, street traffic, or sudden noises, do not assume noise cancelling will remove them.

Less sound can mean less awareness

Strong isolation can make it harder to notice announcements, approaching vehicles, alarms, or people trying to get your attention. Consider whether you need to hear your surroundings, and use an awareness or transparency setting if your headphones offer one and it is appropriate for the situation. Portnuff’s advice to know what is happening around you is from an expert interview, not a formal safety standard. NIOSH also cautions that excessive sound reduction can leave workers less aware of their surroundings.

Fit and comfort vary

Headband pressure, weight, heat, ear-cup fit, and the sensation of isolation are personal factors, not universal defects. If you plan to wear headphones for long periods, comfort and compatibility with your setting matter. NIOSH identifies comfort and compatibility as important to consistent use of hearing protectors; that guidance concerns protectors, not a ranking of consumer headphone designs.

Are noise-cancelling headphones hearing protection?

Ordinary ANC headphones should not be treated as hearing protectors for machinery, construction, concerts, or other hazardous noise. NIOSH says ANC should not be considered hearing protection unless the device is labeled with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). Where hazardous noise requires protection, use an adequate, properly fitted hearing protector, such as rated earplugs or earmuffs. A consumer headphone’s ANC feature alone does not establish that it is safe for that purpose.

ANC also does not make loud playback safe. As Portnuff said in the July 2025 interview, “Ultimately, what we’re most concerned about is the sound level at your ear in your headphones.” That quotation reflects the audiologist’s explanation, rather than regulator language or a formal clinical guideline.

How to listen more safely

Hearing risk depends on both sound level and exposure duration. WHO’s 2026 safe-listening guidance recommends keeping device volume at no more than 60% of maximum and, if using a sound-level app, aiming for an average below 80 dB. The percentage is a practical ceiling, not a calibrated sound level: actual loudness varies by device, headphones, and content.

WHO gives 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week and 90 dB for four hours a week as examples of how allowable listening duration falls as level rises. These are examples from its safe-listening guidance, not guarantees for every listener or device. NIDCD says sound at or below 70 dBA is unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, while long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. Follow these practical habits:

  • Keep volume down and take listening breaks.
  • Use exposure monitoring when available, while remembering that app estimates may not precisely reflect sound at your ear.
  • Move away from loud sources where possible.
  • Use properly fitted, rated hearing protection when the environment is hazardous; do not rely on ordinary ANC.

What hearing-loss statistics do—and do not—tell us

NIDCD reports that a CDC study using 2011–2012 data found at least 10 million U.S. adults under 70 (6%)—and perhaps as many as 40 million (24%)—had hearing-test features suggesting noise-related hearing loss in one or both ears. NIDCD also reports that data from 2005–2006 showed such features in as many as 17% of U.S. teens ages 12–19. These are population findings about hearing-test features associated with loud-noise exposure; they are not evidence of health outcomes caused by ANC headphones.

A separate concern sometimes raised is whether ANC causes auditory processing disorder. In the university interview, Portnuff described that claim as speculative and said he had seen no supporting evidence in his clinical practice or epidemiologic research. That is one expert’s account in an interview, not a systematic review of the question.

How to choose headphones for your situation

There is no single best option for every listener, and no current models are compared here. Use the following questions to assess what matters for your use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What sound are you trying to reduce? ANC is most suited to steady noise; changing voices and traffic may remain audible.
  • Will the fit stay comfortable? Consider pressure, heat, weight, and how long you expect to wear them.
  • Do you need awareness of your surroundings? Check whether the controls offer an awareness or transparency mode and whether it suits your setting.
  • Does the headset fit your device and routine? Consider how you will use it for travel, work, or study.
  • Is the noise hazardous? Look for hearing protection with an appropriate NRR and fit, rather than treating consumer ANC as a safety feature.
