In The Posthumous Investigation, a murder mystery becomes an excuse for sharp, self-aware comedy, while a hand-drawn noir version of 1937 Rio de Janeiro gives the jokes an atmospheric backdrop. That contrast is the game’s distinctive appeal: it treats its crime with a light touch without pretending that death and illness are light subjects.
Why the humor and art style fit
Pocket Gamer writer Stephen Gregson-Wood’s first-impressions headline says the game’s “silly sense of humour and lovely art style work surprisingly well together.” His accompanying description calls the story funny and notes that it pokes fun at itself rather than treating the serious crime with unbroken solemnity. That is a critic’s impression, not an objective measure of the game’s writing.

The visual setting helps make that irreverence feel intentional. The official Steam description calls the game “satirical, witty, and dark” and places the investigation in a “hand-drawn 1937 Rio de Janeiro” that it says “drips with style, sarcasm, and atmosphere.” The result, as described by the store page and reviewer, is not a choice between comedy and noir: the stylized setting gives the jokes a world to play against, and the humor keeps the crime story from becoming conventionally grim.
What kind of game is it?
The Posthumous Investigation is a single-player adventure from Brazilian studio Mother Gaia Studio, published by CriticalLeap and Infini Fun. It launched on Steam on 31 March 2026. Its premise is a time-loop murder mystery: a dead man hires you to investigate his own killing.

The structure makes observation and deduction the point; the humor and art style shape how that investigation feels.
Is it purely lighthearted?
No. The comedy coexists with serious subject matter. The Steam content notice identifies murder, death, mental and physical illness, and incorrect treatment; it also notes that some characters drink and smoke. The listing says the material is not graphic but does not recommend the game for children. Its satirical tone should not be mistaken for a story free of difficult themes.
