Its subject was the original launch-era DualShock 4, not a later hardware revision. Sony’s redesign focused on the parts players touch constantly: the analog sticks and D-pad. The goal was not to reinvent the PlayStation layout, but to address complaints about the DualShock 3’s grip, resistance, travel and button feedback while accommodating shooters, racing games, fighting games and longer sessions.
The strongest evidence concerns Sony’s design decisions and testing process. Claims about improved precision or fighting-game performance remain design intentions and hands-on impressions, because the feature supplied no laboratory measurements for stick travel, actuation force, latency or dead-zone size.
At a glance: DualShock 3 versus DualShock 4
| Component | DualShock 3 baseline or criticism | DualShock 4 change | Intended effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stick tops | Domed, convex surfaces that could feel slippery | Recessed center with an angled, ridged outer edge | More secure thumb placement for both center-pushing and side-pushing techniques |
| Stick height | More thumb travel | Lower sticks | Easier movement between sticks and the touchpad, with less fatigue for some users |
| Stiffness | Lighter than the DualShock 2 after racing-game feedback | Set between DualShock 2 and DualShock 3 resistance | A compromise between steering comfort and shooter aiming control |
| Dead zone | Games ignored a larger area around neutral, according to the feature | Reduced dead zone, with no percentage published | More of the physical movement could register as input |
| L3/R3 | Clicks could be difficult while the stick was tilted | Easier activation at an angle | Better access to sprint, crouch and other stick-click commands |
| D-pad | Less pronounced directional separation | Deeper center, wider raised directions and a clearer click | More distinct tactile feedback, including for fighting-game inputs |
These comparisons come from GamesBeat’s interviews with Sony product-planning manager Toshimasa Aoki and developers involved with Killzone: Shadow Fall, including Guerrilla Games personnel. The original report and its second page are available at GamesBeat and page two.
Why Sony changed the sticks
GamesBeat described a broad gamer sentiment that the DualShock 3 felt loose and light, particularly in shooters, and that its shoulder buttons did not feel like conventional triggers. Those are experiential observations, not a measured industry consensus. Still, stick feel matters especially in a first-person shooter: the thumbs stay on the sticks for movement and aiming, so friction, resistance, travel and the neutral zone affect constant small corrections.

A hybrid top instead of a simple concave cap
The DualShock 4 cap was the result of testing fully convex, fully concave and ridged designs. Its center is recessed so the thumb can settle into it, while the outer ridge is flatter, angled and textured. Sony rejected a sharply edged concave rim because people who pushed from the side found it uncomfortable. The final geometry was intended to stop the thumb slipping without assuming that every player pushes from the center.
Lower sticks and the fatigue trade-off
Sony lowered the sticks to make it easier—especially for smaller hands—to move between the sticks and the new touchpad. That also reduced total extreme-to-extreme movement. Aoki said the remaining range was comparable to what players knew from the DualShock 3 and greater than the Xbox 360 controller’s range, but that is a manufacturer-side claim, not an independently measured specification.
In reported user sessions of roughly two hours, some participants said large repeated thumb movements became tiring. Sony therefore presented the shorter movement as an ergonomic choice: preserve usable control while reducing thumb and joint strain. Players with large hands or a strong preference for tall caps could reasonably experience the trade-off differently.
Stiffness negotiated across genres
The final resistance sat between the relatively stiff DualShock 2 and the lighter DualShock 3. The Gran Turismo team had favored lower resistance for repeated steering, while shooter developers wanted more resistance—particularly on the right stick—to make fine aiming feel steadier. Sony tested different height and stiffness combinations with first- and third-party developers and their user groups, including Guerrilla Games, Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog.

- Charge Efficiently: The DualShock 4 Wireless Controller can easily be recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when on standby, or with any standard charger with a micro-USB port.
That process produced a compromise rather than a setting optimized for one genre. The article also notes a limitation: prominent studios may have exerted more influence than smaller teams, even though Sony said it intended to give developers equal weight.
Dead zone: more usable movement, no published number
A dead zone is the small area around the stick’s neutral position that a game ignores. It prevents tiny physical variation or sensor noise from moving the character when the stick is supposed to be centered.
Because the shorter sticks offered slightly less physical movement, Sony reduced the dead zone so more of the remaining movement could be interpreted. That can make a stick feel more responsive, but an excessively small dead zone can also feel twitchy. GamesBeat reported the rationale, not a numeric percentage, angular threshold, sensor resolution or standardized test; no precise launch-era value should be inferred.
Easier L3 and R3 clicks while tilted
The stick tops also press inward as L3 and R3 buttons. Sony made those clicks easier to trigger when the stick was pushed sideways, addressing a DualShock 3 complaint that an angled click could be awkward. This is useful when a shooter asks for movement, aiming and sprinting or crouching at the same time. The unavoidable trade-off is accidental activation, which Aoki acknowledged Sony had to balance against accessibility.

What changed on the D-pad?
The DualShock 4 retained the PlayStation four-direction arrangement but altered its profile and feedback. Directional sections became more pronounced on a flatter, shinier surrounding surface instead of sitting in the older grooved recess. The center received a deeper depression, and each direction rose toward its outer edge. Sony’s stated aim was clearer separation, a more definite click and a shape comfortable for both center presses and pushes near the sides.
Why fighting games mattered
Sony included fighting-game testing, specifically Street Fighter, because quarter-circles, diagonals and rapid direction changes expose weaknesses that menu navigation does not. A deeper center can help center the thumb, while distinct raised directions can make each transition easier to feel. Contemporary coverage also documented the physical comparison at Kotaku.
What the evidence does not prove
The GamesBeat reporter liked the initial D-pad feel but explicitly had not played several matches of Street Fighter IV. Consequently, the article supports “designed and tested with fighting games in mind,” not “objectively superior for competitive play.” It provides no controlled count of missed diagonals, simultaneous inputs, actuation force or tournament results. A raised edge or deeper valley may also feel less comfortable to someone who presses from the sides.

First-person shooters
The recessed caps, increased resistance and smaller dead zone were aimed most directly at aiming and movement. Easier angled L3/R3 clicks also suit sprint, crouch and melee commands. Whether the result feels more precise depends on the game’s own stick curve and dead-zone settings; Sony’s feature did not publish a universal precision test.

Racing games
Racing feedback helped push the DualShock 3 toward lighter resistance, because steering involves repeated corrections. The DualShock 4’s intermediate stiffness therefore represents a compromise: potentially more controlled than the lighter predecessor for some players, but not necessarily ideal for someone who prefers minimal resistance over sustained turns.
Fighting games
The D-pad’s deeper center, wider directional surfaces and clearer click were intended to improve tactile confidence during diagonals and quarter-circles. They are design goals, not proof of better competitive execution.
Action and adventure games
Lower sticks can reduce repeated thumb reach, while easier L3/R3 activation helps games that map sprint, dodge or crouch to clicks. The same sensitivity and accidental-click trade-offs remain.
Menus and casual play
More distinct D-pad directions can make navigation feel clearer, but the benefits are mainly tactile. They should not be confused with measured gains in input accuracy.

Design intent, impressions and unknowns
- Directly reported decisions: Sony chose a recessed-and-ridged stick top, lower sticks, intermediate stiffness, a reduced dead zone and easier angled L3/R3 clicks; it also reshaped the D-pad and deepened its center.
- Development input: Sony consulted several internal and external studios and reported user sessions of about two hours, but the article gives no sample size or statistical methodology.
- Hands-on impressions: The reporter described the D-pad positively on initial contact and characterized the DualShock 3 criticism as a broad sentiment. These are not laboratory findings.
- Not established: No numeric dead-zone value, stick height, travel distance, force curve, sensor resolution, latency measurement or controlled fighting-game accuracy result is provided.
A launch-era redesign, not a current buying guide
This feature was published on October 22, 2013, as part two of GamesBeat’s four-part DualShock 4 design series, before the PS4 launched in North America on November 15. GamesBeat later displayed a June 18, 2025 update date, but the subject remains the original 2013 design process. Later DualShock 4 revisions, worn stick caps, replacement parts and modern third-party controllers should not automatically be treated as identical to launch units.
For the surrounding series, GamesBeat covered the controller’s abandoned concepts in part one, buttons and triggers in part three, and the touchpad, light bar and other elements in part four.
Verdict
The original DualShock 4 was an ergonomic refinement built around competing demands. Sony made the sticks easier to hold, shorter to reach and easier to click, then paired the reduced travel with a smaller dead zone and resistance between the DualShock 2 and DualShock 3. It reshaped the D-pad for stronger separation and feedback, with fighting games in mind. The redesign is well documented as a set of engineering choices and compromises; claims that it was universally more precise or definitively better for competitive fighting games go beyond what the launch-era evidence demonstrates.
