Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAs of 04:41 UTC on 9 October 2026, four of the six 2026 Nobel Prizes had been announced: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Literature. The clearest documented case of a contributor outside an award is in Medicine. The optogenetics prize names three laureates, and a Le Monde report from 6 October described two other scientists, Ernst Bamberg and Edward Boyden, as “overlooked by this Nobel Prize” (English translation of the French original). No official statement names anyone as left out, and no public source shows who was nominated for any 2026 prize.
“Left out” therefore describes a gap between a person’s contribution and a prize citation. On its own, it does not establish a nomination, a rejection or an unfair decision. The sections below separate those claims.

What “left out” can and cannot mean
Each Nobel Prize credits the work the committee chooses to name. The science prizes are capped at three laureates per award, so a team’s contribution can be real and still fall outside the names on the certificate. The phrase “left out” can mean four different things, and only some of them can be checked:

- Nominated but not selected. Possible for any candidate, but nominations are not published.
- Never nominated. Public records cannot show whether this happened.
- Unfairly excluded. A judgment about the outcome, not a finding of fact.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee states its position directly: “The Committee does not announce the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves.” It also says nominations and assessments remain confidential for 50 years. A claim that a named person was a 2026 nominee who lost out therefore cannot be verified now. If it can ever be verified, it will be after that confidential period has ended.
#1 Best Overall
The optogenetics case
Optogenetics combines genetics and light to switch targeted neurons on or off, which lets researchers test how brain circuits work. It is primarily a laboratory technique. Possible clinical uses are a separate question and are not established treatments.
The three laureates
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for developing optogenetics. The prize’s description of the work also covers light-gated ion channels, the proteins that open in response to light and let it control electrical activity in cells.
Rank #2
Ernst Bamberg
Le Monde credits Bamberg with early work on light-sensitive proteins from algae. That work sits upstream of the tool the laureates later developed and applied, which is why reporting treats him as a contributor outside the award.
Edward Boyden
According to Le Monde, Boyden collaborated with Deisseroth on applying the tool to brain circuits. That is an application role. Application came after the tool was developed, so his documented contribution sits on a different part of the timeline from the prize wording.
How much weight the “overlooked” label can carry
“Overlooked” is Le Monde’s word. It expresses a view that these two scientists’ contributions are not reflected in the prize. It does not show a committee error, and it does not show that either man was nominated in 2026. Both of those claims would require information the committees do not publish. The report also does not establish that Bamberg and Boyden are the only contributors outside the citation. They are a well-documented starting point, not an exhaustive list.
What the other 2026 prizes credit
The other three announced prizes differ from Medicine in discipline, in the scale of the team behind the work, and in the gap between discovery and recognition. The table shows what each cited announcement or report credits, and who else is named in the coverage. Where no outside contributor is named, the table says so rather than implying there were none.
| Prize (2026) | Laureate(s) | What the citation or report credits | Other contributors named in coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physiology or Medicine | Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel | Developing optogenetics; light-gated ion channels | Ernst Bamberg and Edward Boyden (named by Le Monde, 6 October, as outside the award) |
| Physics | Francis Halzen | Decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences citation, as reproduced by Fermilab). The detector is a cubic kilometre of ice at the South Pole, fitted with light sensors. | None named individually. AP emphasizes the work as a large collaborative effort. |
| Chemistry | Henri B. Kagan, Kenso Soai | Control of which mirror-image form a chemical reaction produces. AP reports relevance to medicines. | None named in the coverage cited. |
| Literature | Anne Carson | An inventive body of work in dialogue with the classical tradition, spanning poetry, prose, translation and collaborations (Swedish Academy citation, as reproduced by AP) | Not applicable. The prize names one writer. |
Public numbers and what they measure
Peace Prize candidates
The Associated Press reported on 9 October that the Norwegian Nobel Committee had 287 Peace Prize candidates in 2026, just over a quarter of them organizations. The figure is a count. It identifies no one, and it does not show which candidates were considered most seriously.

Clarivate’s Citation Laureates and citation threshold
Clarivate named 22 Citation Laureates for 2026. The company states that the list is not meant to predict Nobel recipients in a specific year, so a Citation Laureate who did not win is not evidence of an error. Separately, Clarivate’s analysis of Web of Science records indexed since 1970 found that fewer than 0.02% of more than 67 million indexed articles and proceedings had more than 2,000 citations. That is a threshold from Clarivate’s own analysis, not a Nobel standard, and it says nothing about who deserved a prize.
Quick Recap
Still open at the timestamp
- Peace Prize: announced later on 9 October 2026. Its winner, and any question about who was left out of it, could not be answered at the timestamp.
- Economic Sciences: scheduled for 12 October 2026. The same limits apply.
How to test a “left out” claim
- Check the official citation. If the person’s work is named there, they are not omitted from the credit. If it is not, the next question is whether the omission bears on what the prize recognizes.
- Establish the kind of work involved: discovery, a tool or method, or an application. In optogenetics, the method, the underlying microbial proteins and later applications are distinct contributions.
- Check whether the work depended on a larger team, and whether that team is named in the citation or in independent reporting.
- Identify the source of the claim: an official citation, independent reporting, or speculation. Each supports a different level of confidence.
- If the claim concerns nomination status, treat it as unverifiable until the confidential period ends.
