But a larger area on one date does not, by itself, mean the season’s ozone loss was unusually severe: CAMS said other measures were close to average. The apparent contradiction is explained by the difference between long-term recovery and the weather-sensitive chemistry of a single Antarctic spring.
What does “big” mean for the ozone hole?
The ozone hole is not a literal opening in the atmosphere. CAMS measures its area as the region where the total ozone column falls below 220 Dobson Units (DU). The reported 25 million km² was an estimate for 12 September, not a final seasonal maximum. CAMS also reported that the area had reached 15 million km² by the end of August, slightly earlier than average.

Area is only one way to describe ozone depletion. The minimum ozone-column value records the lowest reading within the hole. Ozone mass deficit estimates how much ozone would have to be added across the affected area to bring its columns back to 220 DU, so it reflects both the hole’s extent and its depth. In its 16 September update, CAMS said the minimum ozone value and mass deficit were near average even as area was above average.

Why did the area expand so quickly?
CAMS reported that the rapid expansion coincided with a sharp drop in the minimum stratospheric temperature roughly 20 km above the South Pole. That timing is consistent with the known chemistry, but the report does not quantify how much of the area increase the temperature change caused.

Cold conditions prepare the chemistry
Very low stratospheric temperatures allow polar stratospheric clouds to form. Reactions on the particles in those clouds convert chlorine and other halogens into forms that can destroy ozone more readily. When sunlight returns to the Antarctic in spring, chlorine- and bromine-driven reactions catalytically break down ozone. NASA’s Ozone Watch explains that both the cold conditions and spring sunlight matter.
Weather changes from year to year
The Antarctic stratosphere does not have identical temperatures or atmospheric circulation every year. NASA notes that temperature variations contribute to year-to-year changes in the hole’s area and depth; the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) also points to large-scale transport conditions as a source of annual fluctuations. Those differences can shape one season without reversing the longer-term recovery.

How can the ozone layer be recovering while one year looks worse?
Recovery describes a long-term change in ozone-depleting substances and the ozone layer, not a promise that each year’s Antarctic hole will be smaller than the last. Natural variability in temperature and transport can make individual seasons stronger or weaker around that trend.
The contrast with 2025 illustrates the variability. In its September 2026 bulletin, the WMO reported that the 2025 season’s maximum ozone mass deficit was 36.7 million tons on 29 September, compared with a 1990–2010 mean of 50.1 million tons. The bulletin described 2025 as among the weakest depletion seasons in more than two decades. That result provides context for year-to-year variation; it does not determine where 2026 will rank.

The broader outlook remains recovery. In a 16 September 2026 statement, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo called it “an environmental success story” and said the ozone layer had been recovering since 2000, with full recovery expected within several decades.

The careful conclusion is that the hole’s area was notably above average on 12 September, while the other CAMS diagnostics reported at the time were near average. The season was still underway as of 7 October 2026, and the cited CAMS update did not establish a final peak, full-season severity, or ranking. A fair comparison needs the same metric and matching dates or seasonal windows—not area alone.
