Buy The Outlast Trials Standard edition if you want access to the game; Deluxe adds the Reagent Starter Pack, a set of cosmetic extras rather than a stated gameplay requirement. You can play solo or with others, but the game requires an internet connection. Before choosing a platform, check the separate online multiplayer subscription requirement for Xbox consoles and the full PC requirements on Steam.

Which edition should you buy?

For the game itself, Standard is the straightforward choice. The US PlayStation listing says it contains the base game. Deluxe includes the base game plus the Reagent Starter Pack, according to the platform listings.

Edition What it includes Who it suits
Standard The base game, according to the PlayStation listing. Players who want to play without paying for the Starter Pack cosmetics.
Deluxe The base game and Reagent Starter Pack, according to the Xbox listing. The PlayStation listing describes four legendary outfits, player-cell customization, and player-icon customization. Players who specifically want those cosmetic extras.

As a US storefront snapshot, PlayStation displayed $39.99 for Standard and $49.99 for Deluxe when checked for this guide. Prices and edition availability can vary by region and change; check your platform’s live store before buying.

Do you need DLC or paid add-ons?

The storefronts list optional paid extras, including outfit and cosmetic packs and Murkoff Coins. The cited listings do not establish any of these as necessary to access the core game. If your goal is simply to play, you do not need to buy a cosmetic pack based on the available edition information. Add-on names and catalogs may differ between platforms and regions; see the Xbox and PlayStation listings for their current offers.

What do you need to play?

A supported platform

The game is listed for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC through Steam. Xbox also lists Xbox Cloud Gaming; availability may depend on the service, region, and subscription. Check the PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam listing for your platform.

An internet connection

PlayStation marks online play as required. That does not mean you need a group: the listing describes solo as well as team play. PlayStation lists four online players, and Xbox describes online co-op for two to four players.

An Xbox console subscription for online multiplayer

For online console multiplayer on Xbox, Microsoft says a qualifying Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription is required and sold separately. This is an Xbox-specific requirement; check the current terms for your own platform rather than assuming they are the same.

A PC that meets the full requirements

Steam lists Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, and 40 GB of available storage among the minimum requirements. Those details are not the complete specification: check the live Steam listing for the CPU and graphics requirements before purchasing.

Can you play with friends on another platform?

Red Barrels says full cross-play is supported among PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The same developer announcement says cross-progression is not supported, so progress does not carry over if you later switch platforms. Check the developer announcement before choosing where to build your save.

How to choose where to buy

  1. Start with hardware you already own. If you have a supported console or a PC that meets the full Steam specification, buying there avoids choosing a platform solely for this game.
  2. Choose Standard unless you want the cosmetics. Deluxe’s documented difference is the Reagent Starter Pack, not a stated gameplay advantage.
  3. Account for online access. You need an internet connection; if playing on an Xbox console, include the required qualifying multiplayer subscription in your decision.
  4. Consider where your friends play, but remember the save limitation. Cross-play allows play across the listed platforms, while cross-progression is absent.
  5. Check the live store and hardware requirements. Regional prices, add-on catalogs, and PC specifications can change.

Do you need any extra equipment?

The cited platform listings do not establish a headset or other special peripheral as a requirement. A controller or headset may be convenient, but the evidence here does not show that either is required. No physical boxed edition is established by the cited listings.
