Short answer: The Order: 1886 has an official PlayStation 4 release, not a native Windows edition. As of October 2026, PC play is possible only through experimental shadPS4 emulation. A PS4 delivers the intended, supported 30-frames-per-second cinematic presentation; emulation can exceed 30 FPS and offer more display flexibility, but shader-compilation stutter, visual glitches and rendering artifacts remain possible.
Is The Order: 1886 officially available on PC?
No. Sony released The Order: 1886 as a PlayStation 4 game, and Sony’s product and store listings do not identify a native Windows version. There is no publisher-supported PC installer, Windows executable or official PC graphics-settings menu.

Current PC play uses shadPS4, an experimental PlayStation 4 emulator. Compatibility is an evolving technical project rather than a finished port. Reports from October 2026 show the game running on capable computers, sometimes above 30 FPS, but also describe shader-compilation pauses, visual glitches and artifacts. Those results depend on the emulator build, computer hardware, drivers and configuration, so they should not be treated as a universal PC specification.

Graphics: why the PS4 version still looks distinctive
Filmic camera language
Ready at Dawn designed the game around a deliberately film-like presentation. Sony describes its “Filmic vision” as reproducing the nuances of real motion-picture cameras and lenses. The image uses a wide, letterboxed composition rather than filling a conventional 16:9 television from top to bottom. The bars are part of the presentation, not evidence that the console is failing to render the image.
The approach also affects motion, depth, lighting and post-processing. The goal is a controlled cinematic frame, with camera behavior and lens effects supporting the story’s alternate-history London rather than a purely competitive shooter aesthetic.
Materials, lighting and post-processing
A later Digital Foundry retrospective identified image quality, physically based rendering, lighting and post-processing as the game’s principal technical strengths. Physically based materials help metal, stone, leather and wet surfaces respond in a more believable way to the scene’s lights. Lighting and post-processing then shape the gloomy streets, interiors and action sequences into a consistent visual style.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The result was considered visually cutting-edge for a 2015 PlayStation 4 release. That assessment concerns the shipped console game, not a claim that its image is technically superior to every modern PC game. Its achievement was extracting a highly controlled, filmic look from fixed console hardware.
Resolution and the letterboxed frame
Digital Foundry’s launch-era analysis, as preserved in contemporary discussion, described earlier builds rendering at 1920×800 with letterboxing. Third-party compatibility records characterize the retail PS4 and PS4 Pro output as 1080p-class, 30 FPS and letterboxed. The third-party entry is useful corroboration, but it is not an official Sony specification, and the two figures should not be read as contradictory measurements of every build or every scene.
On a PS4, the important practical point is that the game was tuned around a fixed cinematic frame rather than a user-selectable collection of PC resolutions. You do not get the usual Windows options for arbitrary aspect ratios, unlocked frame rates or ultrawide layouts.
What a PC emulator can change
Emulation can make experimentation possible. Depending on the shadPS4 build and your hardware, you may be able to render above the console’s 30-FPS target, use a higher-resolution desktop display or adjust presentation settings unavailable on PS4. These are possibilities of the emulator environment, not guaranteed features of The Order: 1886.
Higher output does not automatically mean a cleaner experience. Shaders may compile while you play, causing temporary hitching. Incomplete compatibility can produce missing effects, corrupted geometry, flickering, or other artifacts. A powerful graphics card cannot correct an emulator defect, and a new emulator build can change behavior without matching the results reported for another build.
Performance: locked cinematic target versus variable emulation
Why the game targets 30 FPS
Ready at Dawn publicly defended a 30-FPS target during the game’s development. Contemporary reporting quoted the studio’s view that 24 FPS “doesn’t feel good,” while 30 FPS provided the intended filmic motion. The target was therefore a design decision tied to camera movement, animation and presentation, not simply a concession to weak hardware.
How the retail PS4 game behaves
Launch analysis found the retail game staying near its 30-FPS target through most of the experience. The most noticeable frame drops were associated with some cuts between scenes, rather than a sustained collapse during ordinary play. Because the console hardware and software configuration are fixed, every PS4 owner receives broadly the same performance profile.
Rank #3
Thirty frames per second is slower than the 60-FPS mode familiar from many current action games, but it is predictable. For a story-led third-person shooter built around cinematic framing, that consistency is a meaningful part of the intended experience.

Experimental shadPS4 reports show the game running above 30 FPS on capable PCs. No publisher-owned, standardized PC-versus-PS4 benchmark establishes a universal frame rate, frame-time result or recommended hardware level. A number recorded on one processor, graphics card, driver and emulator revision cannot be generalized to every computer.
Even when an emulator displays a high average frame rate, shader compilation can interrupt smoothness. A system may render a scene quickly after its shaders are cached, then stutter when a new effect or area appears. This makes frame-time consistency more important than a single peak-FPS figure.
Features and gameplay that do not change between platforms
Single-player action in Neo-Victorian London
The game is a single-player action title set in a re-imagined Neo-Victorian London where science and myth collide. The story follows social unrest and a conflict involving Half-breed enemies. Sony’s listings do not advertise an official multiplayer mode, so neither the PS4 release nor PC emulation should be approached as a multiplayer product.
Weapons and investigative gadgets
The arsenal includes advanced weapons and gadgets such as the Arc Gun, Thermite Rifle and Monocular. These tools support the game’s blend of firearms, investigation and supernatural threat. Their presence is part of the original design; emulation does not create additional weapons or a separate PC control scheme.

Performance capture and seamless transitions
Sony highlights full performance capture and transitions that move directly between story and action. Its product copy describes a “seamless narrative experience,” with captured characters and scenes working alongside continuous changes between cinematic moments and play. This integration is one reason the game’s image quality and frame pacing matter beyond raw resolution.
Controller and living-room features
The PS4 product listing includes DualShock 4 vibration and Remote Play. Those are platform features of the supported console release. On PC, controller rumble, button prompts and Remote Play behavior depend on the emulator and the input layer you configure; they are not guaranteed by an official Windows version.
Does PS4 Pro improve The Order: 1886?
No dedicated PS4 Pro upgrade was released. Digital Foundry’s retrospective specifically notes that the game never received a PS4 Pro enhancement. Third-party compatibility data likewise records PS4 and PS4 Pro output as 1080p-class, 30 FPS and letterboxed, with no Pro-specific improvement.
A PS4 Pro can run the PS4 software, but you should not buy one expecting a higher-resolution mode, a 60-FPS option or upgraded textures for this title. The game remains the same console release.
Does The Order: 1886 support PS5?
The documented official release is for PS4, and the cited Sony product information does not list a native PS5 edition. It therefore cannot be described as a PS5 game with PS5-specific graphics modes. If you are considering playing through a newer PlayStation system, verify the current backward-compatibility listing for your region and account before purchasing; the available product information establishes the PS4 release, not a separate PS5 feature set.

Reliability and convenience: which platform is the better choice?
Choose PS4 when you want the intended experience
- You want a supported, plug-in-and-play release with predictable 30-FPS behavior.
- You value the original letterboxed composition, DualShock 4 vibration and documented Remote Play support.
- You do not want to troubleshoot emulator builds, shader caches or rendering defects.
- You are satisfied with the game’s fixed console presentation rather than seeking arbitrary resolutions or frame-rate experiments.
The PS4 copy and console are the straightforward route. Current prices, seller condition and regional availability change, so check those details at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing.
Choose PC emulation only for experimentation
- You already have a capable PC and are comfortable using unofficial software.
- You specifically want to investigate higher frame rates or modern display configurations.
- You can supply a legally obtained game dump under the rules that apply where you live.
- You accept that compatibility may change between shadPS4 builds and that some scenes may stutter or display incorrectly.
PC emulation is best understood as a technical project. It is not a supported port, and there is no official customer-service path for an emulator-specific crash or visual defect.
Practical PC expectations and troubleshooting
Before starting
- Confirm that your computer is suitable for experimental PlayStation 4 emulation; the available reports do not define a universal minimum or recommended specification.
- Use a shadPS4 build known to support the game and read that build’s compatibility notes.
- Prepare a legally obtained copy and dump, following the rules in your jurisdiction.
- Use a controller or keyboard mapping you can test in a simple scene before judging performance.
- Record the emulator version, graphics driver and hardware when comparing results with another user.
If the game stutters
Shader-compilation stutter is a reported emulator behavior. Allowing the affected area or effect to compile can change later runs, but it does not guarantee a completely smooth session. Compare frame-time behavior after repeated runs rather than relying on the first pass through a scene.

Visual glitches and artifacts have been reported on test systems. First reproduce the issue with the same emulator build and settings, then check compatibility notes for a known issue. Avoid treating a screenshot from one build as proof that every PC configuration has the same defect—or that changing one setting will fix it universally.
If performance claims conflict
Check whether the figures describe an average FPS, a short scene, a capped frame rate or a run after shaders were cached. Because no standardized benchmark exists, hardware, drivers, emulator revision and scene selection must accompany any meaningful comparison.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable first playthrough | PS4 | Supported retail software with a known 30-FPS design target |
| Original cinematic framing | PS4 | Letterboxed presentation and console-tuned image pipeline |
| Experimenting above 30 FPS | PC emulation | Possible on capable hardware, but not guaranteed or standardized |
| Minimal troubleshooting | PS4 | No emulator shader or compatibility layer to configure |
| Modern monitor flexibility | PC emulation | Potential for higher output resolutions and display experimentation, balanced against glitches |
| Official platform features | PS4 | DualShock 4 vibration and Remote Play are listed for the PS4 product |
Bottom line: PC or PS4?
For most players, PS4 remains the better version because it is the official release and delivers the presentation Ready at Dawn designed: letterboxed, filmic and centered on a predictable 30-FPS target. The game’s strongest technical qualities—physically based materials, lighting, post-processing, performance capture and seamless story-to-action transitions—are already present in that release.
PC emulation is worthwhile only if you knowingly want an evolving experiment. It can open the door to frame rates above 30 FPS and flexible display output, but those benefits come with unofficial software, hardware-dependent results, shader stutter and possible visual corruption. There is no evidence of a supported native Windows edition that combines PC flexibility with console-level reliability.
